 Around the Jewish year 5330, world history was fundamentally changed by one of the greatest of Jewish sages - the Arizal. Standing on the shoulders of his teachers, his spiritual accomplishments brought a decisive "tikun" (repair) to the world, which ended the long era of the dark ages, and started the era of "Ikveta DeMeshicha" - the footsteps of the Moshiach.

Three dates serve to characterize the life of the Arizal. He started his study of Kabbala in the year 5310, under the guidance of Rabbi Betzalel Ashkenazi. In the year 5317, he received a copy of the Zohar. 

Blasphemy and sorceries and murders

It was likely the most pivotal event in his live and clearly a great impetus to his studies. In the beginning of the year 5331, the Arizal started teaching in the city of Zefat in the Land of Israel.

If the Arizal repaired something, how did it get broken? The world was existentially broken by the destructions of the first and second Temples.

The Father in Heaven destroyed their flesh temples of Abominations, as he will their Third, Strike three and they are out.

 After the "tikun" in the time of the Arizal, the world regained as it were the level of spiritual harmony that had been before the destruction of the second Temple.

The destruction of the second Temple was the fulfillment of an old decree, recorded in Daniel 9:27: "After half a week He will cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease." If the 6000 years of world history are divided into 50 "days" of 120 years (see "The Holy Seventh Week), half a "week" is 420 years, which was the time our sages say the second Temple stood.

It is important to realize that the days of the second Temple were only a shadow of the days of the first Temple.

Moreover, the period of the second Temple was one of steady spiritual decline. For that reason, as much as was accomplished by the Arizal, much more was to be gained in his footsteps. Hence, parallel to the 420 years of decline during the time of the second Temple, a compensating half "week" of spiritual growth was decreed, to recover the level of spiritual harmony that had been at the time of the completion of the second Temple, the time of the latest prophets.

In the beginning of the year 5751, 420 years after the Arizal started revealing his knowledge, this "tikun" was completed.

At this very time, the beginning of the year 5751, a horrendous tragedy happened: Rabbi Meir Kahane was murdered. It was 434 years after the Arizal started his study of the Zohar. Could it be that more words of Daniel were fulfilled in 5751? We read: "And after 62 weeks a Moshiach will be cut off, and none will be left to him (Daniel 9:26)." Seven times 62 equals 434. Could there be a more appropriate description of the rejected prophet Rabbi Meir Kahane than "none will be left to him?"

Yes, I am suggesting that Rabbi Kahane was Moshiach ben Yosef, and I am by no means the first to do so. Many harbor the thought in their hearts, because of the scholar Rabbi Kahane was, because of his unique labor for a truly Jewish state, and because of what happened to him.

In his last shiur in his Yeshiva, Rabbi Kahane taught about Moshiach ben Yosef, the self-sacrificing Moshiach who is not recognized by his brothers, but prepares them for the coming of Moshiach ben David.

 In his magnificent book Or HaRa'ayon, which Rabbi Kahane was frantically working on in the final months of his life, and which he almost finished, the subject of Moshiach ben Yosef stands out because two independent chapters are devoted to it. He was not given the time to merge the material into one chapter.

After the 62 weeks, seven weeks were decreed until another Moshiach, as it says:

How many Moshiach's will you Have Judah, How Long will you deny Jesus the Christ? Until your utter anihilation?

 "Know therefore and understand that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Yerushalayim until a royal Moshiach, shall be seven weeks. (Daniel 9:25)."

Perhaps not by chance the number 5751 is one plus a multiple of 50. If indeed the 62 year-weeks ended in 5751, that year was the penultimate Yovel year, and the subsequent seven year-weeks are as seven "Shmita" countings towards the final Yovel year.

Alternatively, the seven final year-weeks are like the seven weeks of the counting of the Omer, a counting towards the final giving of the Torah in the 50th year.

If my thesis is correct, two of the final year-weeks have gone by, and five are yet to come. I would like to propose as a corroboration of my thesis that the remaining five "Shmita" years 5772, 5779, 5786, 5793, and 5800 are all hinted at by two famously intractable verses of the book of Daniel about the very last phase of history:

5772 is 2012

"It shall be for time (mo'ed), times (mo'adim), and a half, and when the crushing of the power of the holy people shall have been completed, all these things shall be finished." (Daniel 12:7)

There are none holy, all are fallen short of the Glory of God, but these are worshippers of Satan and Unholy, his "Chosen" the Robbers Chosen who they choose and deny Jesus the Christ

"And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken way and the abomination that makes desolate be set up, there shall be 1290 days. Fortunate is he who waits, and reaches 1335 days." (Daniel 12:11-12)

It follows from "Why Do We Live in the Year 5765" that the year 3192 was in a sense year zero of the Jewish counting of the years. The year 5772 is two mo'adim of 1290 years after this year zero. The year 5786 is one mo'ed of 1335 years after the abomination that makes desolate was set up. This abomination is the mosque that was erected in the year 4451 on the place where the Holy Temple should stand.

The year 5800 is two mo'adim, one mo'ed of 1290 years and one mo'ed of 1335 years, after the daily sacrifice of the first Temple was taken away in the year 3175.

Concerning the last figure, the Seder Olam brings down that the first Temple was destroyed in the year 3338. Historical sources, however, corroborated by biblical data, quite unanimously and precisely prove that the real year of the destruction was 163 years earlier. It was Rabbi Shimon Schwab who pointed to the book of Daniel for the explanation of the missing 163 years: "But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, until the time of the end (Daniel 12:4)."

Rabbi Schwab concluded that our sages received a Divine command to corrupt the counting of the years in order to frustrate computations of the end of times.

In addition, Rabbi Schwab's view is independently and crucially strengthened by the findings in "Why Do We Live in the Year 5765": The Jewish year count was first established in the beginning of the second-Temple period.

Returning to the topic of the five remaining "Shmita" years, one can see the verse Daniel 12:7 being fulfilled in the fact that the mo'ed year 5786 is exactly halfway the two mo'adim years 5772 and 5800. Moreover, the intermediate "Shmita" years 5779 and 5793 can be seen as other fulfillments of the same verse: both are exactly halfway a mo'adim year and the mo'ed year.

As a final note about the Arizal, it seems to me that his life relates in yet another way to the book of Daniel. We read: "Seventy weeks are decreed concerning thy people and concerning thy holy city (Daniel 9:24)".

The year 5800 is seventy times seven years after the Arizal started learning with Rabbi Ashkenazi, in the year 5310.

Learning Mystery Babylon

The Talmud teaches in Sanhedrin 99 that the "days of Moshiach" (the final period towards the redemption) are three generations. It brings two opinions about the length of this period in years. In one view, the "days of Moshiach" are 40 years; in the other view they are 70 years.

The three generations are the generations of Moshiach ben Yosef, Eliya the prophet, and the royal Moshiach, Moshiach ben David. The task of Eliya the prophet is to connect Moshiach ben Yosef and Moshiach ben David, by "turning the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers (Malachi 3:24)." Importantly, Eliya will give his Semicha to the new Sanhedrin.

If Israel had merited to be redeemed in a glorious and swift way, the task of Eliya (Elijah)  would have been simple. It would have taken him only one day, and the "days of Moshiach" would have been 40 years. But Israel did not merit to be redeemed in a swift way. It will take Eliya many years to accomplish his work, and the "days of Moshiach" will be 70 years. The parallel to the 70 years that were decreed for the Babylonian exile is obvious. Like the 420 years of "Ikveta DeMeshicha" undid the spiritual damage of the second-Temple period, the "days of Moshiach" are to undo the damage of the Babylonian exile.

In this light, if Rabbi Meir Kahane was Moshiach ben Yosef, the days of Moshiach ben Yosef were the twenty years before 5751 and the days of Eliya the prophet and Moshiach ben David are the fifty subsequent years. Therefore, we must now be living in the years of Eliya the prophet. If so, soon prophecy will return, the Sanhedrin will be restored, and the hearts of the children will turn to their fathers.

Unto their fathers whom they admit they are, who slew the Prophets of God the Father

If my thesis is correct, we are about to enter the third of the last seven year-weeks until the complete redemption. We read about the third week and fourth week of the first counting of the Omer: "They arrived at Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date-palms; they encamped there by the water (Shemot 15:27)." The verse hints at a blessed period of a nation of twelve tribes growing in Torah under the guidance of seventy members of the Sanhedrin.

And see: In the beginning of this year, in the city of Tiberias, we merited witnessing the establishment of a new Sanhedrin, which now convenes in Yerushalayim. The new Sanhedrin did not yet receive widespread public recognition. However, I have little doubt that it was established with great wisdom at the right time, and that the acceptance of its authority is a great Mitzva.

Jones' escapades and explorations were the inspiration for the blockbuster movie 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' of the 'Indiana Jones' trilogy. The man who wrote the first draft of the film, Randolph Fillmore, was one of the volunteers who worked with Jones in 1977.

“I agreed to help him write the movie,” Jones said, “as long as – number one – he wouldn’t set it here (in Israel). Some people believe the ark is in Ethiopia or Egypt, some believe its in Constantinople or Rome.

With the help of an ancient document found in Qumran together with the Dead Sea Scrolls, known as the “Copper Scroll”, Dr. Jones is convinced he has pinpointed the location of the Ark of the Covenant.

Jones recounts his early explorations into the tunnels which lead from the ancient Old City of Jerusalem, near Jaffa Gate, to the foot of the Dead Sea. “My son and I went an hour and 20 minutes into the tunnel. There were so many branches and we didn’t have anything to mark the route, so I said, ‘We better get out of here and come back with a roll of string.’ Then I made the mistake of asking permission to do it. That was before I learned that Israel is a lot like heaven - it is a lot easier to get forgiveness than it is permission.”

Dr. Jones, wearing an orange anti-disengagement bracelet, dismisses the current Israeli government's plan to uproot the Jews of Gaza and northern Samaria from their homes. "There will not be any disengagement, nor will there be any Palestinian State,” he says.

Dr. Jones says the discovery of the lost ark will “flip the whole world right-side-up.”

In 2001, in the opening months of his ex-presidency, Bill Clinton confided to an aide that he had decided on his dream job for the next chapter of his life: secretary general of the United Nations.

The goal may not be realistic, he acknowledged, but he then went on to analyze all the factors in minute detail, as though he were preparing for a political campaign: whether a U.S. president would ever see fit to back him, for one, and what it would take to persuade other nations to bend the long-standing tradition that the top job does not go to someone from a country with permanent status on the U.N. Security Council.

His ambition, as the aide described it, was both breathtaking and entirely logical for a natural-born politician who had reached the top of the American political ladder: "president of the world."

Four years later, say several associates who have spoken with him in recent months, Clinton regards his dream of leading the United Nations as something more than a flight of fancy and something less than a serious prospect. Already, however, he has succeeded to a surprising degree in fashioning his ex-presidency to make himself a dominant player on the world stage.

His ambitions are no less obvious than when he was on the rise as a domestic politician. Clinton wants to present an alternative face of America to the rest of the world -- in implicit opposition to President Bush, and to create a legacy that builds on his eight years in office.

His recent appointment as the U.N. representative on tsunami relief is the highest-profile example of Clinton's travels and activities abroad. The extent to which the 42nd president has preserved influence even after leaving the White House will be far more obvious in September. That is when a large delegation of world leaders, U.S. politicians, business leaders and celebrities of various stripes will arrive in New York for the first Clinton Global Initiative.

The event, as Clinton recently described it, is modeled after the famous annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. But Clinton has said he wants his three-day event to be more focused on concrete results. "I'm telling people not to come unless they are prepared to make a commitment to do something when they leave" on the conference's themes of fighting poverty, religious conflict and environmental degradation.

Among those planning to attend are British Prime Minister Tony Blair, King Abdullah of Jordan, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R). Even Rupert Murdoch, whose New York Post and Fox News network are favorite platforms for many of the harshest Clinton critics, plans to be there.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president, also organized his post-presidency around international endeavors. But, as the upcoming meeting illustrates, Clinton's post-presidency is in many ways without precedent.

Carter, whom Clinton has described as the most impressive modern ex-president, eventually won a Nobel Peace Prize, but first he spent several lonely years recovering from his 1980 reelection defeat by toiling in relative obscurity. Much of his work has been in remote Third World villages, with no cameras. Clinton, by contrast, relishes the headlines that invariably follow from his overseas jet-setting. So far this year, he has visited 22 nations and met with more than 30 current or former heads of state.

Aides say Clinton's aim is to use his celebrity and networking talents with heads of state and various other famous and wealthy people on behalf of causes such as clean energy and AIDS relief. His Clinton Foundation, for instance, has negotiated steep discounts with pharmaceutical companies on antiretroviral drugs and is facilitating their delivery to about 110,000 people with AIDS in the developing world, with a goal of reaching 2 million by 2008.

Viewed from a long perspective, Clinton's post-presidential career contains an interesting historical twist. In the early years of his administration, the wide perception was that he was predominantly a domestic president.

The conventional wisdom was never quite accurate. Even in the opening months of his first term in 1993, Clinton routinely huddled late into the evening with his advisers on Russia, which he regarded then as the central foreign policy challenge.

It was true that the world abroad was a vexation to a young president who aides said regarded foreign policy as a kind of priesthood, and who had not learned to trust his instincts. The years 1993 and 1994 produced a parade of painful episodes abroad. There was the debacle of a peace mission gone awry in Somalia, two years of hand-wringing over ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, an averted gaze from a genocide that killed 800,000 in Rwanda. Clinton has called failing to act in Rwanda his greatest regret as president.

But, starting with the Dayton accords that ended the Bosnian war in 1995, Clinton began gaining confidence in foreign policy. His signal insight, as veterans of his administration describe it, was the realization that foreign policy was not in the end so different from the subject he knew best, domestic politics. As Clinton saw it, both involved public salesmanship and required leaders who could frame issues to make difficult decisions -- such as persuading people to accept a peace accord with historic enemies -- politically possible.

Beneath the surface, there is a deep vein of politics in Clinton's international activities as ex-president. While he has mostly supported Bush on the Iraq war -- and says that all Democrats should be supporting full victory even if they first opposed the war -- almost every speech he has given in recent months has contained the same refrain, delivered in nearly identical language.

"We can't relate to the rest of the world only through a negative prism, and only through telling them to do things," he told the Chamber of Commerce in Lancaster, Pa. "Why? Because if you live in a world where you can't kill, jail or occupy all your enemies, security will never be enough. You've got to make a world where you've got more friends and fewer enemies, where you make partners."

The veiled criticism of Bush is unmistakable. Clinton, associates say, thinks Bush has weakened U.S. standing in the world by being too dismissive of allies and projecting an image of American arrogance abroad. Bush says he welcomes allies but will not let dissenters abroad stop him from doing what he thinks is necessary to protect security.

For all the new rapport in the Bush-Clinton relationship -- Bush throwing regular rhetorical bouquets to his predecessor and assigning him to visit tsunami-stricken areas -- the two presidents represent twin poles in a pointed ideological debate. Since Sept. 11, 2001, has been at the center of national politics, this argument about the relative balance of force vs. persuasion in U.S. foreign policy has been at the middle of domestic politics.

The debate is reflected in the records of both Clinton and Bush. Many of Clinton's foreign policy achievements were rooted in the America-as-friend philosophy he espouses now. He expanded the NATO alliance and sought to use his rapport with the erratic Boris Yeltsin to establish a cooperative relationship with Russia -- efforts that paid dividends when Moscow helped the United States resolve ethnic conflicts in the Balkans by sending peacekeepers to Bosnia in 1995 and intervening to force a capitulation by Serbia in the 1999 Kosovo war.

One of the guiding principles of Bush's foreign policy was that his predecessor was possessed of a naive worldview. As Bush and his lieutenants see it, Clinton's attempts to coax the late Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat to a peace deal with Israel were folly, while he did not do enough to confront rising threats from Iraq and the al Qaeda terrorist network.

Clinton also was criticized for passivity in running his government -- including on issues of terrorism. He was not on speaking terms with then-FBI director Louis J. Freeh, whom he appointed. The commission investigating the Sept. 11 attacks found that Clinton and his top aides thought they had ordered that Osama bin Laden could be killed if there was an opportunity to do so in a covert mission, but that the White House expressed its preference with so many cautionary notes that the CIA believed it did not have permission.

Richard A. Clarke, a former anti-terrorism official who served under Clinton and in both Bush administrations, recalled that "Clinton would make requests, and just assume that these were being done, or that the people around him knew best." He said Clinton should have fired Freeh rather than tolerate a dysfunctional relationship with an essential national security official.

While the debate continues about Clinton's record as president, his activities as ex-president suggest a man who sees redemptive possibilities on the world stage.

One of the people helping Clinton raise money for tsunami relief is former White House chief of staff Erskine B. Bowles. He told associates that he was so appalled by Clinton's behavior during the scandal that their nearly fraternal relationship for a time became coolly correct, confined to business.

The role of Ira Magaziner also reflects the theme of second chances. He was famous as the policy architect of the 1993-1994 health care initiative, one of Clinton's most extravagant failures. These days, Magaziner is working nearly full time on the Clinton Foundation's policy programs. He said Clinton has a stature that allows him to draw attention to AIDS treatment and issues that most people never could.

"Some of the problems that have bedeviled him at home and made him controversial don't really exist abroad," Magaziner said. "My sense is he wants to make his ex-presidency one where he has really major accomplishments in the world."

In the United States, the debate over Bush's approach to the world and Clinton's -- between force and persuasion -- remains unsettled. But it seems apparent which approach is more winning abroad. While Bush has generated deep suspicion, especially in Western Europe, Clinton is highly popular, European commentators said.

Europeans who chafe at Bush respond to Clinton's "inclusive, soft-toned way of communicating with the world, and especially with Europeans," said Arnout Brouwers, a prominent Dutch editor who has studied American politics in Washington with the German Marshall Fund. "His personal history, his charms, even his personal failings, helped people identify with him as 'one of us.' "

Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, a friend of Clinton's, agreed. "The reason Bill Clinton is popular in Europe is very simple: He just is. He is a man of great charisma," Kohl said in a brief interview after a meeting with Bush in Washington.

Asked about Clinton's dream of heading the United Nations, Kohl said: "I do not know if Bill wishes to go to the United Nations. If he wants, I would support him."

Student boosts Jesus at graduation

A student speaker at a U.S. university’s graduation said the true path to success lies “through Jesus.”

The student’s comments, made May 19 at Rutgers University-Newark’s commencement ceremony, prompted some students and faculty members to walk out, the New Jersey Jewish News reported. University officials, who did not have an advance copy of the speech, said they do not endorse the student’s remarks but support his right to speak freely.

Etzion Neuer, New Jersey regional director of the Anti-Defamation League, called the student’s statement “upsetting,” and said student representatives at public universities need to remain sensitive to all groups.

JERUSALEM – A group that led a Jewish protest at the Temple Mount in hopes of reclaiming the site from its Islamic custodians, sparking worldwide Muslim protests, is planning another rally in spite of police objections, the group's leader told WND this morning.

Revava, an organization with the stated mission of ''restoring self-esteem to the state of Israel by restoring national pride and values," in conjunction with other Temple Mount activist organizations, has scheduled a gathering Monday near the Mount's Damascus Gate courtyard to demand Jewish sovereignty over the heavily restricted site.

Monday marks Israel's victory in the Six Day War, and the liberation of Jerusalem's Old City and the Temple Mount from Jordanian control.

"We will again bring people to the mount area. We'll commemorate Israel's reclaiming of the Temple Mount and stress that it is the holiest site for the Jews and that Jews must be allowed to pray there unrestricted," said Revava director David Ha'ivri.

But the Jerusalem police have told Ha'ivri they will not allow the protest to go ahead.

"The gathering was not coordinated with the police ... we won't let them go up to Temple Mount and we won't let them have a ceremony," Jerusalem police spokesman Shmulik Ben Ruby told WND

The last Revava rally, which took place April 10, required the Israeli police to station 3,500 officers at checkpoints and entrances throughout the Old City, the walled section of Jerusalem that houses the Temple Mount. About 200 Jewish protestors were allowed past the intense security.

April's rally prompted counter-protests by Palestinians in the West Bank, Gaza and on the Temple Mount, and by more than 100,000 Muslims in Indonesia and several other Muslim countries.

Revava today filed a petition in Israel's Supreme Court demanding the right to assemble, but Ha'ivri said his protest will take place even if the request is denied.

"We will go ahead with our plans for Monday," said Ha'ivri. "We've already advertised in communities throughout the country."

He said Israeli Knesset member Aryeh Eldad, of the religious National Union party, has agreed to speak at the rally.

The Temple Mount was opened to the general public until September 2000, when the Palestinians started their planned intifada by throwing stones at Jewish worshipers after then-candidate for prime minister Ariel Sharon visited the area.

Following the onset of violence, the new Sharon government closed the Mount to non-Muslims, using checkpoints to control all pedestrian traffic for fear of further clashes with the Palestinians.

It is still open but only Sundays through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., and not on any Christian, Jewish or Muslim holidays or other days considered ''sensitive'' by the Waqf, the Muslim custodians of the Temple Mount.

During ''open'' days, Jews and Christian are allowed to ascend the Mount, usually through organized tours and only if they conform first to a strict set of guidelines, which includes demands that they not pray or bring any ''holy objects'' to the site. Visitors are banned from entering any of the mosques without direct Waqf permission. Rules are enforced by Waqf agents, who watch tours closely and alert nearby Israeli police to any breaking of their guidelines.

''The situation is simply intolerable,'' said Ha'ivri. ''This is a Jewish state. The Temple Mount is Judaism's most holy site. We're not going away until Jews can once again pray there unrestricted.''

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati Wednesday warned Israel's repeated violations of Lebanese sovereignty endangered calm in the region.

In a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Mikati wrote: "We would like to draw your attention to the dangers posed by Israel's continued breaching of the Blue Line on the Lebanese-Israeli border and its violations of Lebanese sovereignty.

These violations constitute a blunt challenge and defiance of international will and your repeated calls for avoiding action that threaten peace efforts and security in the region, Mikati said.

The premier said in an interview with CNN Wednesday that disarming Lebanon's Shiite militant group Hezbollah was an internal matter and should not be determined by the international community.

Disarming Hezbollah can only be through internal dialogue and not according to an international decision, Mikati said in a veiled rejection of the part in U.N. Security Council resolution 1559, which stipulates disarming Hezbollah and armed Palestinian factions in Lebanon

Israel must notify each of the Arab nations and their Western backers that, if Israel is attacked or is about to be attacked with unconventional weapons (or overwhelming conventional forces), there will be a "Share the Pain" response. Given the Arab world seems to be in unanimous agreement on the fate of Israel, one must presume any future action of each will likely be known by their partners. Even if they do not actually tell each other, nevertheless, their intelligence mechanisms will have penetrated each other's political and military organizations. So, in brief - they will know.

    Therefore, Israel would be wise to notify each country that, either pre-emptively or as a vicious second-strike option, Israel will hit all hostile parties with nuclear weapons, regardless of who launched the first attack. Israel will hold all collectively and severally responsible - as if they had met and conspired together.

    Let each of those nations now, in the interests of their own survival, become Israel's informant and protector. Let them task their spies in each of the Arab countries to dig for attack plans. Let them each demand of the others' leaders that they must stand down their plans to attack and destroy Israel. Let them, for their own survival, inform Israel and join in the pre-emptive attack or stand ready to see their cities evaporate along with those of Israel.

    One hundred or 200 nukes will reduce the hostile cities and army sites of the Middle East to rubble in minutes. Of course, the ensuing debris would also envelope those nations who sold the Arab world the weapons of nightmares. After all, they enjoyed the money and clearly understood that what they were selling was to be targeted at Israel.

    Perhaps with a dedicated and credible deterrence, the Europeans selling weapons will make some effort, along with American Arabists, to have the Arab nations stand down their plans which call for the destruction of Israel and its replacement by an Islamic State. Perhaps the supplying nations, in their greed for future sales and the protection of the oil fields, will make an effort to dampen the Jihad (Holy War) enthusiasms of their Arab clients. However, should the Arabs decide to launch their final Jihad against the Jewish State, it's only fair that these weapons' supplying nations also "Share the Pain."

1. Introduction

Every civilization throughout history has promulgated rules providing for the punishment of those who offend society’s norms. The history of criminal justice is replete with societies that have included the practice of "incarceration" as one form of such punishment with—arguably—various degrees of success as a deterrent to crime or as a form of retribution for it.

In 1996, under America’s criminal justice system, we have incarcerated over 1,100,000 of our fellow citizens in federal, state and county facilities. Prison building has been described as one of the "growth" industries for the 1990s—and beyond.

American society is often said to be built on "Judeo-Christian" values. Yet, the concept of prison nowhere appears in the "Judeo" part of that equation. Indeed, while sentencing options as diverse as financial penalties, 1 atonement offerings, 2 corporeal punishment, 3 capital punishment 4 and even death directly by the hand of G-d are found in the Torah, 5 the punishment of "incarceration" as we know it is nowhere to be found in traditional Torah-based Jewish law.

This article will first attempt—in a highly-abbreviated form—to explain the various references to imprisonment in the Pentateuch, 6 Prophets, 7 Talmud, 8 Maimonides, 9 Codes of Jewish Law, 10 Halachic Responsa of generally-accepted Rabbinical sources 11 and community edicts. 12

Second, it will posit a Torah-based philosophical rationale as to why the Torah does not advocate prison.

Finally, recognizing that we now live in a society that increasingly appears to demand longer and "tougher" sentences, it will offer suggestions consistent with the Torah rationale to propose certain programs in prison that should reduce recidivism and improve chances for rehabilitation.

2. "Prison" In The Torah

A careful reading of Torah sources reveals that where the Torah refers to prisons, they are not sanctioned modes of punitive incarceration. There are prisons established by non-Jewish societies, e.g., Joseph's imprisonment in the jails of Pharaoh's Egypt 13 ; prisons created in contravention to Jewish Law, e.g., the jailing of the prophet Jeremiah 14; prisons utilized as temporary holding cells until trial and sentencing 15; and a prison environment used solely to execute a sentence of capital punishment. 16

That is not to say that Jewish law did not condone restrictions on liberty. The Bible (Byble)  itself provides for servitude (involuntary, imposed by the court), as a reparative form of incarceration. Under certain circumstances, the court could order that a perpetrator of larceny or theft be "sold" for a period of time (not to exceed six years) in order to raise the funds necessary to make restitution. 17 Yet such court-imposed servitude could not degenerate into cruel slave labor. The "bondsman" was entitled by law to good nutrition, proper clothing, productive work and food and shelter for his wife and children. 18 Restitution, not punishment, was the goal.

Another form of restrictive liberty—often misunderstood as "prisons" by readers of the Bible—were the "Cities of Refuge," three of which were established by Moses just prior to the Jews’ entry into the Holy Land after wandering though the desert for forty years and three others established by Joshua after the Jews settled in the Land of Israel. 19 Those cities were, in effect, the earliest known form of "protective custody." 20 Persons found guilty of unpremeditated murder were given the option of moving into one of what eventually were six cities, thereby escaping the lawful revenge of the victim’s surviving relatives.

But the Cities of Refuge cannot—under any stretch of the imagination—be deemed to have functioned in any way similar to today’s prisons. For one thing, the offender was not isolated from contact with his loved ones and outside contacts. These environments were penal colonies that had all functions of a community, including productive work. Indeed, once the offender chose to flee to one of the cities, the court would order the inmate’s wife, children and teacher to accommodate him. 21 The underlying purpose of the Cities of Refuge was atonement, not isolation. 22

A clear indication that the Torah does not advocate the use of prisons is the fact that, while the Scriptures deal in minutest detail with all punishments, giving the precise method of their infliction, types of instruments used, amount of fines, etc., there is absolutely no guidance to be found with respect to punitive incarceration. 23

3. Prison Contrary to Creation's Purpose

The Jewish tradition teaches that everything in this universe was created by G-d with a positive purpose—to be utilized completely without waste. 24 Accordingly, in the criminal justice system punishments should effect direct results and benefits for all parties involved: the perpetrator, victim and society in general. 25

For the criminal, the consequential punishment of crime 26 brings penance, atonement, rehabilitation and ultimate purging. 27 After being punished, one starts with a fresh slate; Jewish law dictates that the community must accept the wrongdoer as before and he regains a place in the World to Come. 28 For the victim and society, punishment must serve goals such as restitution, deterrence, retribution and protection.

Imprisonment does not serve these functions. It certainly brings no benefit (short or long term) to the victim. It appears to offer only temporary benefit to society (taking into account the high percentage of recidivism and the increasing numbers of people being sent "away"). And it obviously does no good for the inmate. On the contrary, prison inhibits and limits man’s potential, destroys families and breeds bitterness, anger, insensitivity and eventual recidivism.

Man is understood in the Jewish tradition to play the central role in fulfilling G-d’s creation, charged with making this world into a "dwelling place for Al-mighty G-d" 29 and using each of his moments to accomplish this purpose by serving his Maker. 30 Accordingly, Man must use all resources available to fulfill this obligation. Imprisonment inherently limits a person’s mobility and ability to function. Accordingly, it appears inconsistent for G-d to charge man with obligations and at the same time prevent him from fulfilling them. 31


4. Reconciling Torah with the Reality of Present-Day Incarceration in America

Although the Torah does not endorse the use of prisons as a viable punishment, Torah law imposes an obligation on Jews to obey the law of the land in which they reside, particularly when the government of that land respects human rights and believes in the betterment, freedom and growth of their inhabitants. 32 Accordingly, following the axiom that everything in creation is for a purpose, we must find meaning and purpose in prison to the extent possible. 33

Examining the extant forms of imprisonment in the Torah, one that most closely parallels the concept of punitive incarceration is the penal colonies established in the Cities of Refuge. We may find and develop some humane and beneficial aspects of imprisonment from the Torah's rules and regulations for this environment.

First, Torah law specifies that such penal colonies must be designed to provide a proper human habitat, required to be located near market towns and fresh water. 34

Second, the sentencing court was obligated to send the inmate’s teacher and mentor into these penal colonies together with the offender. 35 Addressing the most important needs of the inmate, the Torah insists that his Rabbi/teacher be placed in the prisoner’s environment, too. The detriment of limiting the teacher’s freedom is balanced against benefit of giving the incarcerated an opportunity for life through rehabilitation. A Torah-true life—introduced and administered by a competent teacher/Rabbi—can be the foremost force in this rehabilitative process.

In his compendium of the Laws of Rotze’ach, 36 Maimonides expounds on the Biblical (Babylical) verse: "and he should run to one of these cities (of refuge) and live," 37 by noting that "a student who is exiled to a penal colony has his teacher exiled together with him so that he should live." Having one’s teacher present gives the inmate an opportunity for life, for those who seek wisdom without the study of Torah are considered as dead. 38

5. Making The Best Of Time Spent In Prison

When imprisonment affords the opportunity for rehabilitation and restructuring of the offender’s values, priorities and lifestyle, then a valid purpose can be established and realized.

For serious and proper rehabilitation—called "Teshuvah" ("return") in the Jewish tradition—there are two necessary prerequisites. First, one must gain a true understanding and acceptance of one’s present state of being as undesirable. Second, one must develop a firm and disciplined resolve to change and improve. 39 Both remorse for the past and resolutions for the future are required. 40 In the prison environment—where one is separated from society and sheds much of the externalities of societal pressures and facades—one may begin a realistic and objective evaluation of self and structure a pattern for improvement.

The disciplining forces of Jewishness—the commandments referred to as "Mitzvot"—give a person: (1) the mechanism to create control devices for his actions, even to the extent of affecting habit; and (2) regulation in structuring balanced living patterns. 41 These benefits not only prepares a person for a personal life of righteousness and decency, but can extend outward to be an example to others of how not to act and how one can change. The guidelines of Jewish living, through the study of Torah and performance of its Mitzvot, allow the prison environment to be utilized in this positive manner.

Indeed, as the Torah teaches, from the darkest moments and deepest loss can come the greatest light and ultimate gain.

 42 Consequently, it is of utmost importance to make it possible for inmates in these physical confinements to transform a period of suspended death to vibrant life, thus fulfilling their purpose in the universe.

The proven way for a Jew to attain this freedom is by involving himself in a life of Torah study and observance. 43 Non-Jews can obtain this same type of spiritual development through the study of, and commitment to abide by, the Seven Noahide Laws. 44

Our prison systems spend much time and money on vocational, academic and psychological programs. To really accomplish the rehabilitation that is possible in prison, we should also focus on emancipating and structuring the soul — maximizing the human potential even while temporarily incarcerating the body.

WHAT THEY AREN'T TELLING YOU Noahide Concision In the July-August 1991 issue of the Gap, a newsletter published by the Noahide movement, Ernest Easterly, Professor of International Law at Southern University Law Center, made the following statement: "With further recognition by other nations and international courts, the Seven Noahide Laws should become the cornerstone of a truly civilized international legal order." This one statement shows boldly they do not take the act of US Congress to be just a birthday deal. 

In the same paper, Rabbi Michael Katz said that: "there were an additional 30 laws that the B nai Noah (sons of Noah) would be obligated to keep, the transgression of which is punished by execution." (specifically-DECAPITATION BY GUILLOTINE) 

The entire New Testament is to be replaced by the seven Noahide laws. Salvation in Messiah is totally abolished and it would be a death penalty to witness to another about Calvary or even to believe in Jesus for salvation.

 In establishing the Noahide Laws, any reference to the name of Jesus Messiah and Christianity are to be blotted out of public view in all cities, towns, streets, highways, buildings, schools, and universities.

If any of these bear what may be considered a Christian name, or that of Jesus Messiah, that name must be changed. 

The focus now is removing BC and AD from religious articles and government documents; removing Crosses where ever possible and especially from along highways where someone was killed; 

oppose any Christian display on public property; protest prayer in public school for fear a Jewish child will hear a prayer end in the name of Jesus; cast the Bible out of school because it contains the New Testament: if it had only the Old Testament it would be considered antisemetic to throw that out;

 violation of civil rights to witness to a non-Christian on the job; prayer or mention of Jesus at high school graduations etc. etc., ...but more cleansing of Jesus from the public is coming down the pike.

 Shall we really be hated of all nations for the name of Jesus sake? It is unknown if these Noahide laws have been voted into law in any other nation. It is unknown if these Noahide laws have been secretly incorporated somehow into the laws of the United Nations. The statement has been made: If it is an empty gesture, why are the Jews and existing Noahides already working on International implementation of the Noahide laws. 

In his book "The Miracle On Main Street," by F. Tupper Saussy, page 139, enjoins the world to adopt the Noahide laws: These instructions, found first in the Babylonian Talmud (Sanhedrin 56-60) Are addressed first to Adam, then to Noah; they have become known as The Noahide Laws . . . .You may wonder, as I have, why the Noahide Laws are nowhere found in the Bible I have no explanation. They are not identified in the Bible as such Mr. Saussy, because God did not give them to Adam or Noah, nor to any other Godly man to be interpreted privately, as a secret goal to replace the New Testament as the NEW COVENANT. 

That the Seven Noahide Laws are first found in the Talmud, speaks enough to any man of intelligence, that they were fabricated as a scheme to destroy Christianity. 

The Noahide laws exclude the Gentiles from an equality with Jews. In Jesus Messiah, the Jew and Gentile are equal at the foot of the Cross, and neither has an advantage or superiority over the other. 

The mere existence of the Noahide Laws places the unbelieving Jew in a superior position and gives them an advantage over Gentiles, by forcing Gentiles to join the Talmudic Jewish religion or be killed by decapitation.

 Men of God, I urge you to rise up again and preach the Gospel of the New Covenant as never before. Preach boldly that NOTHING can disannul it, correct it, add to it, replace it, or be equal to it. 

There is no other Gospel by which we or the world must be saved. 

The seven noahide laws are totally missing from any Jewish literature prior to the Talmud and not mentioned once as an opposing doctrine in any century of the Church prior to the the compilation of the Babylonian Talmud.

 Since the New Testament was rejected as the New Covenant, these Talmudist felt it essential to find a way to convert Gentiles and accomplish for Israel what Jesus was doing separate from Israel. 

In this manner, the Gentiles would be brought under the power and control of Jerusalem and the Pharisees. 

It has taken nearly a thousand years, but the fruit of that scheme is coming to pass in the endtime just in time for the Noahide laws to be used to destroy the Apostolic Truth and persecute the endtime Saints.

 If the Old Covenant is the forced religion of antichrist, even many Oneness Brethren would deny the finished work of Jesus and go back under the Law for partial salvation. 

They already believe the Law with animal sacrifices and a Talmudic priesthood is re-activated for the Millennial, so why would going under the Law seven years early seem blasphemy?

 Nope, you go back under the Law for salvation and agree that animal sacrifices can be offered for sin, and you just as well be a Buddhist or a Hindu. Followers of antichrist will not think that what they are doing is such a bad sin! 

The Noahide laws will give enforcement authority of the death penalty for worshiping Jesus, and the death penalty for confessing and holding in admiration the doctrine and writings of the Apostles.

 The replacement of the entire New Testament by the Noahide Laws is a goal; The rejection of the atonement upon the Cross is a goal; The rejection of the plan of salvation according to Acts 2:38 is a goal; The spying on one another to supply the one eyewitness needed to execute the death penalty is a goal; The necessity of keeping the other 30 Laws, which includes keeping the Sabbath is a goal; Circumcision of all males is a goal; Eating only kosher foods is a goal; Forbidding holding religious services of any type in a place that is not an approved assembly place for Noahides are is a goal; The death penalty for any man to claim that God has spoken by him in any form of teaching, preaching, or writing is a goal; 

It will be a goal to make it a crime to claim to be a Prophet, Minister, or Pastor, to whom the antichrist authorities have not issued a certificate of license; It will be a death penalty by decapitation (beheading) offense to speak against this new religion. 

By "speak against," they mean to speak against any Jewish Priest, any Jewish Rabbi, any Noahide Minister, any Noahide or Jewish Temple or place of worship, or any doctrine they teach or advocate.

 If a person speaks against any of these, it is considered the same as speaking against God. You will recall that some of these same ideas concerning blaspheming God existed among the Temple cult in the days of Jesus. Common Jews were fearful of the Temple Cult. 

Remember the lame man who was healed, that if his parents confessed that Jesus had healed him, they were to be cast out of the Temple and excommunicated? 

Why do you think Jesus tried to keep his work private? Was it not to avoid the rapid strike of the snake throne against his Ministry, and against the innocent Jews whom the temple cult would have thrust out of the Temple and later did kill many, if they should confess him? JOH 12:42-

Talmudic Judaism Is antichrist Can you imagine Paul going to antichrist Jews or the Concision (ancient noahides), to get their opinion of Messiah and agree to publish their denials that Jesus did not qualify to be Messiah? 

I Where are we told to preach Mount Moriah more than Mount Calvary? Did not Jesus tell the woman in Samaria that: neither in this mountain or the mountain in Jerusalem, would the Children of God worship, but the Mount of God would be where ever there was worshipers in "Spirit and Truth?"

Where are we told to preach Mount Moriah has any special place in God s plans? Where are we told to preach the Temple? Where are we told to preach old Israel still has a valid priesthood that can be re-consecrated with the blood and ashes of a red heifer? Where are we told to preach red heifers? Where are we told to preach a third regathering of old Israel that is not in the Bible anywhere? 

Why do some preach the Jews have not received all the land promised to Abraham, when in Joshua 21:43-45, the Scriptures clearly report they received "all the land which he sware unto their fathers." Where are we told it is alright now to have fellowship with the works of darkness and the Synagogues of satan?

 Who told Apostolic Ministers to go ask the apostate Jews anything about the Word of God, much less ask them for Talmudic interpretations concerning Bible prophecy, the Messiah, the Temple, and Salvation? 

Has the antichrist system arrived and Ministers and others are ignorantly contributing to its acceptance by believing several monthly pro-Temple magazines? 

A sign we might look for is a mass flocking  to hear these and other antichrists spout off, about how holy they are and the grand plans for a new Temple, "built and dedicated according to Talmudic instructions. I marvel that these Apostolic Pastors have fallen prostrate to this Concision, and allowed them to come into their Churches wearing little god-hats having their heads covered. If another Apostolic Minister was to pray, preach, or prophesy with a god-hat on or even a base-ball cap, they would stomp out, outraged! 

Antichrist can come into our churches and deny Jesus was the Messiah, take an offering for the Temple or raise money for red heifers and get away with denying Calvary in  Churches, HOW? WHY?

 Accepting this approach to fellowship with antichrist, will likely lead many  to easily adopt the seven Noahide laws as an addendum to, or replacement of the New Testament. 

At first, friendship will lead to a mixture of pro-Talmudic doctrines with the Gospel. Then joint Church meetings will take place, where antichrist such as Gershom Solomon and Chaim Richman will speak. They are preaching the red heifers at these meetings already. The Talmud is being preached as the holy book of God at these meetings. They are preaching about Talmud instructions and doctrines at these meetings. They are taking offerings for these antichrist already. All that they lack is asking for converts to the Noahide laws or outright conversion to Judaism.

Believe in the "Rainbow"

Exhibit A - the Skittles "Sheep Boy" ad. We start with a longview of a farm & two sheep at a stump eating something. We zoom in to find that the sheep have sheep bodies - & the faces of two teenage looking boys. They're talking about how Skittles has managed to mix two flavors into one candy. Then, a farmer walks past in the background & tells the "sheep" to knock off the talking or something to that effect.

Other than having a sheep/human hybrid, what does any of that have to do with the candy? If this is Skittles way of showing that they've managed to blend "two great tastes that taste great together," then I hate to tell you this, Skittles ad reps, but a) it's already been done (Reeses, anyone?) & b) if sheep & teenage boys are someone's idea of "two great tastes etc.," then someone on Fifth Avenue has some seriously weird fetishes that I just don't want to go into here. Ick...

Exhibit B was one that I saw twice last night. And both times I just shook my head, trying to get my mind to wrap around what I'd just witnessed. It starts with two teenage boys (I sense a trend. I'm beginning to wonder if these were all produced by Michael Jackson - BA DUM BUMP - Thank you! I'll be here all week! Be sure to tip your waiters!), one of them armed with a wrist rocket (aka, a slingshot). The other one tells him to shoot it right into his mouth. Slingshot Boy fires & nails the other kid right square on the cheek, sending him flying backwards. Out of nowhere, a man in a suit runs up, pulls the projectile off the kids face, notes that it's a Starburst candy, pops it into his mouth & runs off.
