Five-Hour Blockade of Kisufim Junction

"I never would have believed that a Prime Minister of Israel would impose a siege on Jews," one resident said.

People from the Katif community of Kfar Darom refused to accept the decree, and set off last night for the Kisufim Junction - the entrance to Gush Katif - for a major protest. They passed through Kisufim, and then immediately turned around to return, in the knowledge that they would be asked to produce proof of residence in Katif. This they refused to do, and the policemen in turn refused to allow them to enter. An instant traffic jam was caused, with cars and people blocking the entrance to Gush Katif.

"Jews have the right to travel freely in the Land of Israel," one said, "and we will not accept this situation."

The blockage on the one side resulted in a closure on the other side, and people leaving Gush Katif - including many guests who had come to celebrate at one of two Bar Mitzvahs or pay a condolence call to a well-known family over the loss of its mother - were unable to do so.

The stand-off lasted for about five hours, with only scattered incidents of reported police violence when they cleared the protestors from the road. The police also tried to tow away some of the cars at one point.

Some of the motorists on their way out of Gush Katif were allowed to travel by a side sand road and thus detour the blockade, but after a while the police closed off this option as well, for a time.

One policeman told a blocked motorist, "Look who's blocking the road - the people from Gush Katif." The motorist responded, "You're the ones who are not allowing us to go via the side road; you're trying to breed infighting amongst us." The policeman did not respond.

Shortly after 1 AM, three local rabbis and another communal leader met with the police - and came out afterwards saying that those who wished to identify themselves and be allowed to pass through should do so. "The police did not negotiate with us in any way," one of the four who met with them said, "but we heard and saw their plans to use force to disperse us."

Many people remained behind for another hour or more, refusing to give in to what they said was the "humiliation" of being forced to produce papers to Jewish government policemen in order to return home. Finally, shortly before 2:30 AM, those who said they lived in Gush Katif were waved on and allowed to pass.

"Was it a victory?" Arutz-7 asked one of the participants, Ami Yonati of Netzer Hazani.

"We don't measure things this way," he responded. "This is just one battle, and our goal is to win the war. There were many more policemen and soldiers than we were, and it's likely that they were not happy about having so many of their forces tied up for such a long time."

Others said that the incident was a sign of what could happen in the future at roadblocks in other areas near Gaza, such as Ashkelon.

Yonati said, "What we have to do is to keep on talking to these soldiers and policemen, and reminding them that we're not against each other, and that they don't want to be involved in such acts. It's true that many of them are afraid for their jobs, but one policeman last night gave up in the middle, and said he doesn't want to do it. We have to keep pushing this point."

Ami's wife said she fears that last night's incident, in which police used violence only sporadically, is only the beginning of a very difficult period. "It doesn't look good," she said, "even for this Monday's march from Netivot. The rumors are that the police are planning to step up their violence against us."

At one point last night, a driver tried to pass through on a dirt road towards Gush Katif without Identifying himself. A low-level officer yelled to his troops, "Stop him!" - and they ran in front of the car, which barely managed to stop without hitting them. A bystander called out, "Is that something to endanger your lives for - preventing a Jew from returning home to his family? Don’t be such heroes!"

To the commander, the man said, "Why is it that of late, when terrorists fire mortar shells at Gush Katif, the soldiers are ordered to hold their fire - but against Jews, they may freely endanger their lives?"

In another exchange witnessed by Arutz-7's correspondent, a soldier said to a resident, "I'm in favor of the disengagement. Don't you realize how many soldiers it takes to watch over you?" The man responded, "In that case, let's close down the whole country - then we won't need an army at all! The purpose of the army is to protect its citizens; one time I protect you, and later you'll protect me. Should the youth of Gush Katif refuse to serve in the Golan or in the Jordan Valley? We're one people and one army, and we're all in this together." The soldier responded, "There's something to what you’re saying."

"Little by little," Yonati said, "if we keep on talking to them like this, we can make a big difference - and it's not too late."

Youth in N'vei Dekalim, Gush Katif's largest community, blocked IDF Chief Personnel Officer Brig.-Gen. Elazar Stern from entering his car following a visit in the town today (Thursday). Eyewitnesses said he first tried to persuade them to move, but then began moving them forcibly by hitting them with his gun butt. He then ordered his driver to drive the car, even though youths were still congregated around the car. Three boys required medical treatment after being hit or having their toes driven over.

Hasidim Rally Against Disengagement

Hundreds of Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidim gathered in New York City last week to rally community opposition to Israel's plan to dismantle settlements in Gaza and the northern West Bank.

The rally, held June 23 at the movement's worldwide headquarters in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, featured Arieh Eldad, a Knesset member from the National Union Party, who is calling for massive civil disobedience to obstruct the removal of the settlers. The event was dominated by a faction of the Chabad community that believes that the movement's late rebbe or grand rabbi, Menachem M. Schneerson, who died in 1994, will return to life as the messiah.

Schneerson told us "that negotiating with our enemies is going to bring bad results," said Rabbi Shmuel Butman, head of the Lubavitch Youth Organization, during an address to an applauding crowd made up almost entirely of yeshiva students and residents from the neighborhood. "Eretz Yisrael belongs to every Jew, and no Jew has a right to negotiate to give away" any land, he said.

While opposition to the disengagement plan is widespread among Orthodox Jews — many of whom see it as a betrayal of a biblical inheritance and as a security threat — their traditionally insular communities have been divided on the questions of whether and how to campaign against it.

Within the Chabad movement, individual leaders, particularly those from the messianic faction, have been in the forefront. Yehuda Leib Gruner, a rabbi who was Schneerson's longtime secretary, met with Prime Minister Sharon earlier this week to protest the plan, according to the Israeli Web site Arutz Sheva. Chabad-Lubavitch messianists reportedly have played a lead role in anti-disengagement demonstrations in Israel and the United States. In response, leaders of mainstream Chabad institutions have made efforts to distance themselves from the controversial political initiative.

The neutral stance of the central Chabad leadership has caused anger among some movement members. They "feel like they have to dance at two weddings," said one attendee at last week's rally, speaking of the Chabad leadership. "The titular heads of the movement have basically marginalized themselves. Whether or not they're on the train, the train has left the station a long time ago and is going and going and going."

Several Chabad leaders have sought to maintain a distinction between the movement and its followers.

"When Chabad comes out strongly and publicly in favor of Greater Israel and against disengagement, even though this is not necessarily a political act, the public sees it as taking a political stand," said Rabbi Menahem Brod, chief spokesman for Chabad institutions in Israel, in a Jerusalem Post interview earlier this mont. "As a result, Chabad becomes an enemy of certain segments of the population who are liable to say, 'I cannot work with you.'"

The challenge for Chabad, said Rabbi David Eliezri, Chabad outreach director in Yorba Linda, Calif., is to recognize the limits of what Chabad can do as a religious organization without cross a line to "spearhead programs of political activism" — while recognizing the right of individual members to "do whatever they can within the context of democracy and the spirit of Martin Luther King... to peacefully protest this policy."

Last week's rally in New York featured several leaders of official Chabad institutions, and was advertised as sponsored by both the Beit Din, or rabbinic court, of Crown Heights, and the local Vaad HaKohol, or community council. The council earlier had passed a resolution to adopt the Gush Katif settlement bloc in Gaza as a sister city.

At the rally, the resolution was presented to Eldad, a physician and former chief medical officer of the Israeli military. He was in the United States to raise money for two field hospitals he is establishing in the settlements in advance of the disengagement. So far, he told the Forward, he has raised $40,000, mostly in small donations, and needs about $15,000 more.

In a discussion with reporters before the rally, Eldad described the looming evacuation as a "siege" and said that the purpose of the field hospitals is to provide routine medical care to settlers, who will not be able to leave the area without abandoning their homes. Eldad said his hope is that enough people will move to Gaza to slow the evacuation until new elections can be held.

"As a doctor, I know that the most effective way to practice medicine is preventative medicine," Eldad said, adding that the best way to prevent future Palestinian violence is to stop the disengagement.

AMERICANS RALLY AGAINST “DISENGAGEMENT”

From the east coast to the west coast, Americans are rallying against the disastrous “disengagement plan to destroy the Jewish homeland in what is known as the Arab/Islamist phase by phase or “stages” plan.  If the mission is successful the Arabs will move on to bigger and better projects and targets – America.

A mobilization for the movement is reaching a strong momentum to save Gaza and Gush Katif and ultimately Israel, America and Western civilization is gaining at a gangbusters pace.

Civil disobedience is breaking out all over the country.  A leader in civil obedience from the Holy Jewish Land of Israel will draw a crowd of thousands in Brooklyn.

A Manhattan protest that took place on May 23rd was even reported by the mainstream media including such publications as the New York Times, the New York Daily News, Newsday, The New York Sun and The new York Post.

The civil disobedience crows drew more than one thousand Chabad Chasidim.  These Chassidim are now gathering their strength in their own territory before launching a campaign to finish the job of stopping Prime Minister Ariel Sharon for carrying out his destructive and disastrous “Disengagement Plan” before the terrible tragedy becomes a reality.

Thursday evening, 9:30 PM, at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn – the Shul and offices of the Lubavitcher Rebbes in America – Chabad Lubavitch Chassidim will be gathering to strengthen their campaign against the Disengagement Plan to extract Jewish residents of 25 towns in the Land of Israel, from their legitimate homes, against their will, and hand over the real estate to Arabs.

At this massive rally – thousands are expected to attend – the Chassidim will be mobilizing their troops, so to speak, to do all they can to thwart the evil decree called Disengagement. Their main concern at this time is the preservation of Jewish life.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe said repeatedly that giving away land would put Jewish lives in danger. Unfortunately his predictions have come true. Military experts agree that the Disengagement Plan will bring a surge of terror in its wake, putting the five million Jews living in the land of Israel in danger.

IDF debating if U.S. conquest is also an Israeli victory

The army's top brass, from colonel up, is to meet Sunday for a presentation by on the Israel Defense Forces' financial condition, the defense budget and the multi-year development budget.

The immediate ramification of the budgetary issues is that many officers and NCOs will be fired, mostly from the middle ranks. But behind these concerns are deeper, political issues with regard to the significance of the American success in Iraq.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz and Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon will sum up the presentations at the meeting, slated to be held at an air force base. In recent days there has been a lively debate underway in the defense establishment in an effort to convince those two - and through them Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the political echelon and the entire public - that there's no reason for the gloom that has begun spreading as it becomes clear the Americans have indeed succeeded in Iraq.

The gloominess does not reflect the professional echelon's opinion. IDF generals have expressed admiration for the performances of their U.S. and British colleagues, but there appears to be a conditioned reflex that as the Americans finish their mission in Iraq, they will turn to Israel and plant the "road map" on the Palestinians and us.

True, say the moderates in the IDF, the road map is close to its official launch, but it should not be seen as a defeat, rather a great success. This is exactly what the IDF was fighting for - a renewal of the political process with a new Palestinian leadership that has shaken off terror and will fight against it.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Violent deaths among Iraqi civilians far exceeded those of soldiers or police during the first six months of this year, according to figures obtained Thursday from separate Iraqi government ministries.

Between Jan. 1 and June 30, 1,594 civilians were killed, according to the Ministry of Health. Civilians often bear the brunt of car-bombings and suicide attacks.

By contrast, a total of 895 security forces — 275 Iraqi soldiers and 620 police — were killed in bombings, assassinations or armed clashes with insurgents, according to figures from the interior and defense ministries.

The number of insurgents killed during that six-month period was 781, the government said.

Earlier this year, Interior Minister Bayan Jabr told The Associated Press that more mosques and clerics from the country's majority Shiite community had been attacked than those belonging to the Sunni minority.

The minister, citing figures he obtained from an Interior Ministry research center, said about 12,000 Iraqi civilians had been killed during the previous 18 months. Of those, more than 10,000 were Shiites, he said.

Jabr said he analyzed the figures based on the areas where the victims lived and not data explicitly stating the branch of Islam they belonged to.

The Israelis' victory

By the time this article goes to print, there may have been another terror attack. By the time it reaches the homes of the readers, Hamas could have carried out a sensational act of revenge. And in spite of this, in April 2004, we can already say out loud what we have been observing since the beginning of the year: There is a reasonable chance that after 1,300 days of war, a new strategic reality is beginning to take shape around us - a reality of an Israeli victory.

We must be cautious; the outcome has yet to be determined; peace and quiet are still far off; Palestinian terror has not been eradicated; it will continue to stalk Israel for a long time. Moreover, Palestinian society has yet to undergo the revolution in awareness that is the only thing that will make it possible to put an end to the conflict. However, after three and a half years of a cruel existential struggle, we can now state that the attempt by Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat to destroy the Jewish homeland by force has failed. As the smoke of battle begins to dissipate, it appears that Israel has gained the upper hand.

What has brought about a relative Israeli victory at this stage of the war is a multidimensional national accomplishment. In terms of security, Israel has achieved clear military superiority vis-a-vis the Palestinian fighting force. The sharp decline in the number of casualties, the sharp increase in the number of attacks prevented, and the almost fictional manner in which Hamas leaders Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi were assassinated are testimony to the fact that the balance of power between Israel and terrorism has changed dramatically in the past two years.

The achievement is also impressive in economic terms: Before our very eyes, Israel is now leaping forward from a depressing wartime recession to the accelerated growth of a society that is beginning once again to believe in itself. Israel's free market and economic vitality are proving during this frenetic spring that they have withstood the threat of the years of terror and have prevailed.

On the diplomatic plane, the achievement is even more impressive. The American decision to shut out the option of the Palestinian right of return and to abolish the sanctity of the Green Line gave Israel, on April 14, its greatest diplomatic success since the peace treaty with Egypt. By defining the final status agreement that will end the present war as an agreement that will in effect be based on recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, Bush's declaration rejected the Palestinian attempt to undermine the Israeli nation-state. It turned Arafat's great attack of the early 21st century into a monumental failure that is increasingly reminiscent of the failed Arab revolt of the 1930s.

However, the main Israeli victory achieved in the years 2000-2004 is not the victory over the Palestinians. It's the victory of the Israelis over themselves, a victory of the Israelis over the insanity that befell them immediately after the Six-Day War in 1967, a victory of the Israelis over the messianism, the delusion and the arrogance that have ruled them for two generations. Because what is becoming increasingly clear these days, with the disengagement plan becoming a generally accepted national platform, is that Israel is in fact beginning to return to itself - to return to its border, to return to its sanity, to return to the rational and moral basis of its existence.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon deserves quite a lot of credit for the victory that is in the offing. He is the one who conducted the military campaign patiently, wisely and calmly. He is the one who conducted the diplomatic campaign with impressive talent. He is the one who enabled Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bring about an economic turnaround here, at a time when he himself was bringing about a far-reaching ideological turnaround.

However, in the final analysis, the limited Israeli victory is not the victory of Sharon. It's the victory of the Israeli individuals who have withstood the supreme test in recent years. It's the victory of Israeli civil society, which knew how to maintain a sense of proportion and a sense of reality even in times of terror. It's the victory of the Israeli public that confronted Islamic fanaticism at the same time as it rid itself of Jewish fanaticism.

This public, which is dynamic and practical and loves life, is the real victor in the 21st century war. It is the Israeli public that demonstrated extraordinary strength, and it is the Israeli public that in the end repelled Arafat, redrew the borders of Israel, and pushed Sharon into a unilateral withdrawal.

As we have said, we have to be cautious. The victory in the offing is a victory in a battle, not in the entire campaign. A strategic terrorist attack is liable to endanger it. A strategic mistake is liable to make it all go down the drain. The cases of corruption are still liable to turn it into a nightmare. However, looking ahead to our 56th Independence Day, we can be a little bit optimistic; and we can finally say a good word about people whom we are accustomed to disparaging - the everyday Israelis, the ordinary Israelis, the Israelis of the buses and the malls and the barbecues.

These Israelis are the real heroes of the present war. In their abrasive way, they are more impressive, wiser and even more moral than all their critics. They deserve to win.

Russian Intelligence Analysts are reporting today that both President Putin (Russia) and President Hu (China) have ordered the immediate activation of 10 Combat Ready Divisions to counter the increasingly aggressive moves being made by the United States in the Caspian Oil Regions of Central Asia. Special Forces Army Units of both Russian Spetsnaz and Chinese Immediate Action Units were also ordered to be immediately deployed to both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to surround the large American Military bases in those regions, and that the governments of both of these countries have ordered the Americans to leave.

(IsraelNN.com) Firefighters have contained two huge fires, one near Mevasseret Zion and the other in the Nahal Refaim area near Bet Shemesh, southwest of Jerusalem. Train service between Bet Shemesh and Jerusalem was halted.

More than 1,000 dunams (250 acres) of forest were burned, and firemen estimate that arsonists set the blazes. Two other fires set by arsonists heavily damaged other forests in Israel this past week, and officials are investigating if Arabs are responsible. During the first intifada, Arabs frequently set fires to forests.

The Kissufim crossing is a new barricade that the army set up about 100 meters (325 feet) east of the former crossing.

Organizers said they were not attempting to block traffic. Last night, police used force to move cars away from the entrance when hundreds of vehicles blocked the roads after residents refused to show identification cards. Several cars were towed away.

China ‘ready to use N-weapons against US’

China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, according to a senior Chinese military official.

“If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” Zhu Chenghu, a major general in the People's Liberation Army, said at an official briefing.

Mr Zhu, who is also a professor at China's National Defence University, was speaking at a function for foreign journalists organised, in part, by the Chinese government. He added that China's definition of its territory includes warships and aircraft.

“If the Americans are determined to interfere [then] we will be determined to respond,” Mr Zhu said. “We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds. . . of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.” Mr Zhu is a self-acknowledged “hawk” who has warned previously that China could strike the US with long-range missiles. But his threat to use nuclear weapons in a conflict over Taiwan is the most specific by a senior Chinese official in nearly a decade.

Rick Fisher, a former senior US congressional official and an authority on the Chinese military, said the specific nature of the threat “is a new addition to China's public discourse”.

China's official doctrine has called for no first use of nuclear weapons since its first atomic test in 1964. But Mr Zhu is not the first Chinese official to refer to the possibility of using such weapons first in a conflict over Taiwan.

Chas Freeman, a former US assistant secretary of defence, said in 1999 that a PLA official had told him China could respond in kind to a nuclear strike by the US in the event of a conflict with Taiwan.

“In the end you care more about Los Angeles than you do about Taipei,” Mr Freeman quoted this official as saying. The official is believed to have been Xiong Guangkai, now the PLA's deputy chief of general staff.

The rationale for the new threats is unclear. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not be reached for comment.

Mr Zhu, who has risen from the rank of colonel over the past five years, insisted he was expressing his personal views, and that they did not represent the policy of the Chinese government. Nor was he anticipating war between China and the US.

But he said that, because China did not have the capability to fight a conventional war against the US, the threat to escalate might be the only way to stop a war.

His comments could provide insight into the thinking among some in the PLA amid growing anxiety in Washington about its capabilities. Last month, Donald Rumsfeld, defence secretary, voiced concern about China's military build-up.
