Thousand of Police Break into Kfar Maimon; Serious Clashes Reported
16:41 Jul 19, '05 / 12 Tammuz 5765

( Soldiers and police broke into Kfar Maimon a short while ago in an attempt to stop the marchers. Serious clashes have broken out. Zviki Bar Hai, head of the Har Hevron Council and head of security in the Yesha Council has been arrested.

World Foundation for the Wellbeing of the People and the Land: Torah Scroll Opens Blocks During Walk
19:14 Jul 19, '05 / 12 Tammuz 5765

( A Torah scroll, written by the World Foundation for the Wellbeing of the People and the Land was at the head of the “Connection” walk on Monday. Harav Shalom Wolfe, initiator of the writing of the Torah scroll, was at the head of the dancers and walkers together with Harav Drukman and other rabbis and public figures. The marchers joined in dancing and song.
People in the Foundation are sure that the Torah scroll opened the “physical” blocks and opened the way for the marchers. They reported that there were police who were not interested in getting involved with the dancers and let them continue on their way.

The writing of the Torah scroll began a few months ago in the Joint Convention of Rabbis for the Land of Israel by Harav Avraham Shapira, former Chief rabbi of Israel, Harav Zalman Melamed and Harav David Drukman. It was completed last week in the Central Habad Center in New York. It was then returned to Israel last Thursday.
It is meant for one of the communities in Gush Katif, to be chosen by lottery on Tuesday.

March to Gush Katif´ Enters Second Day
17:48 Jul 19, '05 / 12 Tammuz 5765
By Nissan Ratzlav-Katz and Alex Traiman

Day two of a protest march to Gush Katif is underway Tuesday as tens of thousands camped in tent cities overnight. Tension is brewing with police as marchers insist on reaching Kissufim Junction.

As we go to press, police have moved into Kfar Maimon and violence was reported. Police have welded shut some of the community's gates and surrounded the area. To follow this story, see website homepage:

Organizers of the disengagement plan protest insist the march will not stop until activists reach their final destination of Gush Katif. Police and IDF forces remain intent on dispersing activists well before reaching their intended target.

Following consultations with senior police and military commanders, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz ordered Tuesday afternoon the tens of thousands of marchers halted at Kfar Maimon and not permitted to continue towards Gush Katif. Mofaz said:

"We have issued clear orders to police and security personnel not to allow entry to Gush Katif. Unequivocally, there will be no entry to Gush Katif."
In addition, Mofaz ordered troops to arrest anyone who managed to bypass police and make their way to Kissufim Crossing.

Activists continue to pour into the region and buses continue to depart every hour, on the hour, from Jerusalem's Binyanei HaUmah Conference Center and the Arlozorov Train Station in Tel Aviv.

The protest began late Monday evening in the Negev town of Netivot, with a large opening ceremony rallying activists together in prayer, dancing, and purpose. Several police estimates, place nearly 80,000 demonstrators at the rally, contradicting most mainstream media reports. Pictures of the peaceful opening event have been displayed prominently in Israeli media, as well as major news outlets worldwide.

NOT in apostate "Amaraka"

Following the rally, at approximately 9:00pm on Monday, demonstrators began their three-day march to Gush Katif and stopped on the outskirts of Kfar Maimon, a small moshav (agricultural village) south of Netivot.

The rally began over three hours later than originally planned as police attempted to prevent many activists from attending. Numerous roadblocks has been established on the roads leading to Netivot. Thousands of motorists were turned around, and activists were removed from buses on their way to the demonstrations. Several bus drivers had their licenses confiscated.

Following questions regarding the legality of their actions and confusion amongst senior brass, police eventually backed down and allowed the demonstrators to reach the rally site.

Tens of thousands of marchers spent the night in tents outside Kfar Maimon. This morning, large police forces were deployed around the tent city, leading to speculation that the demonstrators would soon be forcibly dispersed. However, forces again were pulled back as police did not have the manpower to prevent the marchers from entering the town of Kfar Maimon.

Police commanders have indicated they will not permit large numbers of people to reach the Kissufim Crossing, the main entrance to Gush Katif, preferring to keep the crowd away from the narrow gateway to Gush Katif.

While police have had to retreat twice from attempts Monday night to keep demonstrators from reaching their destinations, many speculate that a large confrontation may ensue in coming days. Thus far police have refrained from using any crowd and riot control techniques outside of their physical manpower.

Typically horses, riot gear, rubber bullets, tear gas, water canons, or even tanks can be used by police to forcibly disperse large crowds. Many of these techniques have been utilized in recent weeks against protesters blocking traffic at major intersections throughout Israel.

The remaining 10-mile march to Kissufim Crossing, the gateway to Gush Katif, is set to resume late Tuesday afternoon, after the hot desert son dissipates. During the day, marchers are taking part in activities for children and adults in Kfar Maimon, as was originally planned by event organizers.

Some anti-Disengagement protestors avoided the large crowds and roadblocks last night, and went directly to Kissufim Crossing. Two activists were arrested as dozens of demonstrators engaged in verbal confrontations with soldiers manning the crossing. The confrontation was reportedly sparked when the activists tried to persuade soldiers to refuse their orders pertaining to the Disengagement Plan.

Exercise to focus on nuclear terror scenario
Posted Jun 29, 2005 at 1:00:PM MDT

FORT MONROE, Va. -- Here’s the scenario…A seafaring vessel transporting a 10-kiloton nuclear warhead makes its way into a port off the coast of Charleston, S.C. Terrorists aboard the ship attempt to smuggle the warhead off the ship to detonate it. Is this really a possibility?

Joint Task Force Civil Support (JTF-CS) here is planning its next exercise on the premise that this crisis is indeed plausible.

Sudden Response 05 will take place this August on Fort Monroe and will be carried out as an internal command post exercise. The exercise is intended to train the JTF-CS staff to plan and execute Consequence Management operations in support of Federal Emergency Management Agency Region IV’s response to a nuclear detonation.

will this occur August 14 ? AV 9
Some of this year’s objectives for SR05 are to refine nuclear incident Concept of Operations, produce a CM Operation Order, refine command post set-up procedures and maintain situational awareness of multiple CM incidents.

The Sudden Response exercise has been held at Quantico, Va., in the past, but has been moved to Fort Monroe to maximize command post training time. The senior leadership felt that it was more important to accomplish training instead of losing up to a day and a half in travel time, said Paul Deflueri, J7 Lead Exercise Planner. “This will allow us to still meet our training objectives,” he said.
external participants may work with JTF-CS during the exercise.
“We’re trying to get representatives from FEMA Region IV as well as representatives from South Carolina Emergency Management Division and active duty soldiers from the (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive) Consequence Management Response Force to play the role of task force units,” Defluri said.
“Each time we do one of these internal exercises, we try to make it more robust and try to add in fidelity,” Defluri said. “That’s what we’re trying to do for SR05: create a good scenario and be able to replicate the effects as best we can. That way we can give the command a really good CM exercise.”

Barry Chamish, Ole Texe Marrs's,  buddy, the Hassidic Noahide Promoter of his hassidic Chabad rib-eyes of the Dragon

Report From Fascist Israel
By Barry Chamish
Friday, July 15/05. I am invited to lecture in Gush Katif at the Neve Dekalim Community Center on Sunday, but two applications to the IDF have been turned down. The army doesn't want me in. On Sunday morning a way in was found, that better left unexplained. A rabbi asks that I come early to hear some vital information.
On Sunday afternoon I was in Gush Katif for the first time in a week. How it had changed! The IDF had built huge bases in just one week and the trucks, bulldozers, tanks and sundry heavy equipment were parked for miles. All was ready for an attack. The August 15th date will prove to be another deception. The rape of Gush Katif will likely begin right after a rigged protest march ends on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, there are no preparations for defence within Gush Katif. Nothing, not even jerrycans of fuel to raze their hothouses, was in place.
Worse still, the residents are letting the army and police enter their villages freely. I'm aghast. Why are they letting their executioners have free rein of their villages? Why aren't they fighting back already?
As I arrive, a Kassam rocket falls on Neve Dekelim 200 yards from me, badly wounding a Chabad rabbi. It is the fifth time he's been attacked and many residents tell me he is being targeted.
Before my lecture, I meet with three rabbinical scholars, and after the lecture with a former woman student of Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, one of the organizers of the last gasp protest march set for the next day. They have gathered damning evidence that Aviner is a Shabak plant inside the Yesha Council. They are certain he has already sabotaged the march beyond repair.
The evidence is indeed damning. In one of his books, Aviner admits to working for an Israeli intelligence agency. He told the Maariv reporter Kalman Lipskind that, "Every now and then the Shabak asks me to write an article for them." As the case builds, one scholar makes the claim that Aviner is a Sabbataian. He notes that his name appeared on an internet list of Israeli freemasons. He has been brought before rabbinic courts for falsifying decrees concerning the correct time for marital relations. In the religious world, this is about as serious a charge as can be laid. It means he sanctioned children born into sin.
"And it's Aviner," I was told," who has been destroying the resistance movement from within. It is he who has ordered his soldier students to obey commands to attack us. It is he who has decreed no resistance to the police. And he is a major organizer of tomorrow's march, so you can be sure it will be a sham."
The lecture hall is packed. I give the speech of my life. The audience is stunned but come question time, their meekness is revealed. One woman tells me no Jewish soldier would hurt another Jew. I answer that foreign soldiers wearing IDF uniforms will do the dirty work. Soldiers without ten words of Hebrew in their vocabulary, had already practised beating on protesters in Tsfat the week before.
The next day one of the audience, Doron, traveled to Kissufim Junction to talk to the soldiers. He phoned me right after. "You were right. They're not Israeli. They barely speak any Hebrew. One told me he was Spanish."
Another question; "You see conspiracies everywhere. Why should we believe you?"
"I see them only where they are provably real. And those tanks at your borders are as real as proof gets. What is the matter with you? You are back in Poland, 1942. The gestapo is primed to drag you out of your homes handcuffed and lead you away in trucks. Who do you want to believe, me or them?"
Question: "Then what can we do against all that power?"
Answer: "You can stand up and fight them like proud Jews defending your homes. If you go down, go down with dignity."
Barry wants the bloodshed, for he wants Moshiach ben Dragon
On the way back, I stop into Kfar Darom for refreshment from the oppressive heat. A beautiful stone synagogue stands nobly in the square. My host proudly notes, "We just finished it last month."
"Fine," I thought. "Now let's see you defend it."
Monday, July 18/05.
The roads to Netivot are packed, traffic is backed up for ten miles when it isn't completely stalled. We finally make it and the first person I see is my departed cousin's wife and her group. She has a story to tell:
"We were all on a bus to here when the Shabak raided it. They took away the driver's license and warned him if he kept driving, he'd never work again in his life. Then the driver ordered us all off the bus."
This same story was repeated all over the country. Thousands of people were forced off buses and not a one of them fought back. The sheep of 2005 Israel are the same sheep of 1942 Poland. Jews are far too suicidal a people to actually learn the lessons of their history.
But not the sheep of the Good Shepherd, Jesus the Christ the IAMHE , for they deny him.
The speakers mount the podium. Just as I was warned the day before, Rabbi Aviner appealed to the crowd not to defy the police, "who are our own flesh and blood."
Without defying the police meant, of course, failure. The only, very only, way to save Gush Katif was to defy the police. Aviner did his nasty deed and was followed by Yesha Council bigwig Pinchas Wallerstein.
It was Wallerstein who sent thousands of Yesha youth to wet, leaky, freezing tents in January to protest for a month outside the Knesset. The result, as anyone could have anticipated, was an utterly futile fiasco which visibly wore down the resistance of the protesters.
Now it was July and he dusted off the same plan in reverse. This time, he would send the protesters marching in near 100 degree heat for two days to break their spirit. And if the day wasn't torturous enough, we were being bitten to shreds by mosquitos at night.
Wallerstein started speaking and he heard disinterested rumbling from the crowd. Quickly, he threw a tantrum, shouting, "Shut up! I'm talking! Pay attention!"
This man finally revealed his personal weakness: He is a certifiable nut job.
Seconds before the 6 km. march to Kfar Maimon is set to begin, there is a shocking announcement from the podium. The police will not permit the marchers to enter Kfar Maimon and camp. But the march will go on anyway.
"This is it, " I tell my companions, "It's the showdown. Get ready to breech police lines."
I prepare myself in the car to be hurt or make it through unscathed, or be arrested trying. Whatever the result, I would stand with my fellow Jews and fight as hard as I knew how.
Traffic to Kfar Maimon is blocked by the police, so we park and start walking to the police lines. It is a surreal hike. In the background are long rounds of machine gun fire, just to scare the protesters who brought their children. And there were lots of them. I thought, are they totally deluded? Was this just a picnic to them, a chance to sleep under the stars? They must have believed that the police would be so moved by the sight of their children that they would open the gates of Gush Katif to them.
As we approach the police lines, the march organizers run up and down the road beseeching the people to go back to their cars and be patient. Their attorneys had submitted a petition to the Supreme Court to let the march continue.
That was it for me. I was going home. If this protest depended on the will of the Israeli "justice" system, I'd rather watch it on tv. Didn't anyone understand that there was no justice to be found anywhere in official Israel, that the government no longer had any moral authority over its people, that Israel as a nation was no longer to be respected or obeyed?
A strange thought hit me. When American blacks sought justice in the mid-60s, they stood up like men and burnt their cities to the ground. And they got their way. The government spent hundreds of billions of dollars to compensate them for injustice and their civil rights were strictly enforced.
Only if a nation's infrastructure is threatened and its regime of crime possibly toppled, will governments be moved to take protests seriously.
We get in the car and turn on the radio news. The first words were, "Fifty thousand settlers gathered..." I requested the radio be turned off. I couldn't handle the lies at that moment. I'm not a settler. My cousin's wife is not a settler. Half the people I met weren't settlers. This was a protest built to fail, but those who showed up were the only Israelis worth a damn anymore, not fifty thousand settlers.
On the way home I thought of some parting words for my fallen nation:
"Bye-bye Israel. You were too cowardly to stand up to fascism and deserved to go."

and Barry wants, Moshiach Now !

Daniel 11

13: For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and shall certainly come after certain years with a great army and with much riches.
And in those times there shall many stand up against the king of the south: also the robbers of thy people shall exalt themselves to establish the vision; but they shall fall.
15: So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to withstand.

Toward the edge of the abyss

By Haaretz Editorial

The call by two former chief rabbis, Mordechai Eliyahu and Avraham Shapira, for soldiers to refuse obeying the military order to prevent pullout opponents from entering the Gaza Strip is not a halakhic ruling. It is a blatant act of incitement and political sedition that is prompting many soldiers to violate the state's laws. The inciting rabbis are drawing a false comparison between the disengagement and the desecration of the Sabbath. In so doing, they are misleading the entire public and shattering, with their own hands, the covenant between religious Zionism and its leadership and the state.

The fact is that other rabbis - the head of the Har Etzion hesder yeshiva, Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein, for example - believe that the opposite is true, and that every soldier, as religious as he may be and as much as he may believe in the sanctity of the land, is bound to obey his commanders and the decisions of the government and the Knesset. The rabbis of the right will, of course, argue that this ruling is political. If so, theirs is a great deal more so.

The Israeli public is witnessing the unfolding of the most dangerous scenario of all, which is tearing apart the thin fabric of democracy and civil solidarity. This act of sedition threatens to whip up individuals and groups within the army. The phenomenon is particularly severe in the hesder units. The Israel Defense Forces was forced Sunday to disband a company afflicted with this scourge, and there are grave concerns that with the intensification of the conflict at the entrance to Gaza, the inciters will influence and sway others.

The Chief Rabbinate was established as an arm of the state. It was defined as an entity that is supposed to function subject to the democratic structure adopted by the country, to represent and serve all of Israel's Jewish citizens. Within this framework, the rabbis were supposed to tone down the inherent conflict between religion and state and, in contrast, to express a consistent desire for the synthesis between statehood and tradition

Moshiach ben Dragon the synthesis ordo ab chao

Until a few years ago, the rabbinate generally upheld these principles, while sanctifying, sometimes in an exaggerated fashion, the state and the army.

Religious Zionism sought to be incorporated in all fields of life and society. The IDF, whose adherence to the orders of the executive authority is one of the cornerstones of democracy, was an important target in this integration process. The religious Zionist movement is proud of having successfully incorporated those who wear knitted kippot into the army.

But from this same religious Zionism that strives for integration grew
Gush Emunim, which aggressively worked to crush the democratic system. Its violent messianic agenda is now yielding rotten fruit in the form of the disastrous phenomenon of refusing to obey army orders. Standing proudly at the forefront of this movement, which is leading the IDF and Israeli society to the edge of the abyss, are the two inciting rabbis, along with hundreds of rabbis employed by the establishment who are echoing their sentiments.

Another former chief rabbi with much influence, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, has been speaking in whispered tones. Another one, Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, who has his eye on the President's Residence, isn't saying a thing. These two also will be called to task over the unraveling of the covenant between religious Zionism and the state. More seriously, they are to blame for the even more tragic enfeeblement of the foundations on which the national home stands.

Tension and High Spirits in Kfar Maimon
19:53 Jul 19, '05 / 12 Tammuz 5765
By Hillel Fendel

Tens of thousands of anti-disengagement protestors are under police siege in the small moshav Kfar Maimon. The police refuse to allow them to proceed towards the Kisufim Junction outside Gush Katif.

Despite 24 hours of uncertainty and tension, the protestors are in high spirits, with circles of singing and dancing breaking out intermittently. The thousands of people of all ages, including entire families, spent the day gathering strength for the expected continuation of their march towards the southwest and Gush Katif. Prominent among the activities were looking for shade, studying Torah in small groups, and sharing experiences and analyses of the situation.

An estimated 40,000 people gathered last night (Monday) at the gravesite of the Baba Sali (of Talmudic Moashiach fame)  in Netivot for the beginning of the three-day protest event. Many thousands more were prevented from arriving when the police confiscated the licenses of bus drivers who were hired to bring them from cities all over the country.

Additional friction with the police was caused yesterday when after the police declared the gathering in Netivot illegal, after originally announcing that it was permitted. Ambiguous statements were also issued regarding the legality of the intention to march from Netivot to Kfar Maimon, seven kilometers (four miles) away. In the end, the demonstrators gathered in Netivot, marched to Kfar Maimon, and spent the night in a large field across from the moshav.

This morning (Tuesday), the tens of thousands of protestors awoke to find that they were enclosed by police and soldiers. They were told to hurry and rush into the moshav of Kfar Maimon, lest the soldiers and police forcibly remove them from the area.

Throughout today (Tuesday), police and Yesha Council representatives met on and off, with both sides exiting to issue conflicting statements. The police said they would not allow the marchers to continue on to their next stop - the Reim Junction - while the protest-leaders said they would in fact continue on, though without raising a hand against policemen or soldiers.

A Yesha Council official addressed the crowd this evening, and said, "We will not announce our specific plans. It could be an hour from now, or two hours, or 18, or 24 - but we will get to Kisufim. The main thing is that this tremendous crowd of people is here, showing such great self-sacrifice... Without violence, we will get there."

At approximately 4 PM, a large force of police suddenly began a scuffle, forcibly closing off Kfar Maimon. Sixteen people were reported arrested.

The police then asked the demonstrators to disperse, saying that they had placed buses at their disposal to leave towards Netivot. A police spokesperson told Arutz-7 that the police are not allowing demonstrators to leave towards the west, and have closed the gates to newcomers. She said that a "steady stream of people are leaving."

People at the site have a different story, however. "If anything, it looks like there are more people here now than there were last night," said Menachem G. of Jerusalem. "I'm right now [Tuesday evening] on my way out of Kfar Maimon, with two of my children, to join my wife, who came from Jerusalem this afternoon. Her bus was stopped outside Netivot, but now she told me that they're on the way... As I speak to you, lots and lots of people are on their way in; it looks like the police are stopping cars, but not people... We'll walk along the road to Netivot and hopefully meet up with each other, and then I'll try to drive back in."

Q. "How will you get in, if they're not letting cars through?"
A. "Either I'll go as far as I can, or I'll go through the fields, like several people have done."

Menachem said that the police are armed with pistols, and are carrying handcuffs. He said he sees no signs of police-supplied buses headed for Netivot, nor of anyone alighting the many empty buses parked outside the Kfar Maimon gates.

KIEV, Ukraine, July 17 (JTA) — A new wave of anti-Semitic outbursts by public figures is surging in Ukraine.

Last week, several newspapers of nationalist orientation published appeals by members of the Ukrainian Writers Union against the “Judaization” of the union and in favor of the expulsion of the group’s Jewish members.

Israeli Police Seal Off Gaza Settlers

By DANIELLE HAAS, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 8 minutes ago

KFAR MAIMON, Israel - Israeli police backed by officers on horseback sealed off an encampment filled with thousands of Jewish settlers and their supporters Tuesday, trading punches and dragging off protesters in the biggest confrontation yet over

Israel's withdrawal from Gaza.

The government has vowed to stop protesters from marching to

Gaza Strip settlements marked for evacuation in August, fearing that more Israeli hard-liners at the sites would further complicate the contentious pullout.

Demonstrators said they would stay in their makeshift protest camp in the farming community of Kfar Maimon and try to march again Wednesday — and the next day and the next — setting the stage for more confrontations.

"As long as this terrible decision stands (to withdraw from Gaza), there will be a constant presence to prevent this," settler leader Pinchas Wallerstein told Army Radio.

The demonstration could shape up as the last major stand by opponents to Israel's withdrawal from 21 Gaza settlements and four in the northern

West Bank.

But protesters' defiance and willingness to tangle with the authorities could also foreshadow difficulties awaiting the government as it tries to remove 9,000 residents from the condemned settlements.

The government said it was determined to push through with its "disengagement" plan, which Prime Minister

Ariel Sharon unveiled a year and a half ago.

"Ariel Sharon is not scared of 20,000 or 50,000 marching settlers," Vice Premier Ehud Olmert said.

Protesters had planned a three-day march beginning Monday in the southern Israeli town of Netivot and ending at the Kissufim crossing into Gaza, 15 miles away. The government outlawed the demonstration, stopped many protesters' buses and sent 20,000 police and soldiers to block the march.

Thousands of the marchers, many of them teenagers and families with young children, stayed overnight in Kfar Maimon, 12 miles from Kissufim, and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said they would not be allowed any closer.

"My orders are unequivocal: not to let this march reach Gush Katif," Mofaz told Israel TV, referring to the main cluster of Gaza settlements.

About 4 p.m., protesters surged toward the village gate, but police blocked their path. The sides traded punches, and two police officers were slightly injured. Police on horseback moved into the crowd; officers arrested 18 people.

"If they want to leave as individuals and go home, they are free to do so. But if they want to leave and march out as a group, we will stop them," said police spokeswoman Sharon Brown.

The marchers had hoped to break through the newly fortified Kissufim crossing into Gaza on Wednesday and march toward the settlements — defying a government order last week blocking nonresidents from crossing into Gaza.

Thwarted, the demonstrators, numbering fewer than 10,000 by police count, turned Kfar Maimon into a protest village, holding sing-alongs and communal prayers. Portable toilets and drinking water were trucked in, and vendors sold sandwiches and sodas.

Many sought cover from the sun under tarps strung from trees. Nearly everyone sucked on orange ice pops — the protesters' adopted color — sold in commemorative Gush Katif wrappers. One teenager hawked an orange car deodorizer in the shape of Israel.

Speakers atop a van blared anti-pullout songs, one with the chorus "Jews don't expel Jews," punctuated by a guitar solo and a Doors-inspired keyboard track. A small crowd gathered around a man playing a ram's horn.

"It looks very pastoral, but under the surface there is a lot of anger and humiliation," said protester Avraham Weiss as he sat under a tree studying for a university exam on algorithms.

"It's been more than a year and a half (since the pullout was announced), and people feel they have been written off, have no way to express their feelings and beliefs," he said.

The government says the Gaza withdrawal would make Israel more secure and strengthen its hold on larger West Bank settlement blocs.

The settlers say that giving up Gaza after 4 1/2 years of violence would encourage more attacks by Palestinian militants.

In the West Bank village of Yamoun, two Palestinian militants were killed Tuesday in a gunbattle with soldiers surrounding their hideout, the army said. The army later bulldozed the building.

Israel has intensified arrest raids of militants since six Israelis were killed in attacks last week. Israel carried out several airstrikes last week, killing six Hamas militants.

The flare in violence also increased tensions between Hamas militants and the Palestinian security services, which promised to stop Hamas' rocket and mortar barrages of Israeli targets.

Palestinian police and Hamas gunmen clashed Tuesday in Gaza, exchanging fire, burning cars and lobbing hand grenades. Nine Palestinian police were wounded, authorities said.

The fighting erupted after the offices of two Hamas-affiliated research companies were burned down, residents said. In a separate incident, Palestinian police refused to stop at a makeshift roadblock in a Hamas stronghold, sparking a gunbattle, Palestinian authorities said.

Palestinian militants linked to the ruling

Fatah movement put their gunmen on high alert and threatened to retaliate if attacked by Hamas.

Tensions between Hamas, which is using rockets to try to prove it is driving Israel out of Gaza, and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who is trying to salvage a cease-fire with Israel, have risen, with Abbas under increasing U.S. and Israeli pressure to crack down on militants
