||Aides to PM Sharon fear Saturday's rocket
attack will cost him votes in Monday's Likud party ballot on when to
hold a leadership vote. Netanyahu responded to the attack: "That's
what I predicted."

News Part 261
Likud Minister without portfolio Tzachi Hanegbi said the barrage
of Kassam rockets would not influence the party's Central Committee members, who
are to meet on Sunday and vote the following day on whether to advance the
Likud’s internal elections.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wants the party’s leadership vote to be held as
scheduled next April. Binyamin (Bibi) Netanyahu and Knesset Member Uzi Landau,
who are running to replace Sharon, want the vote to take place as early as
possible, which would be in late November, according to the party rules.
Likud MK Roni Bar-On said he
expected Netanyahu to exploit the rocket attack, but added that criticism
is out of place because the government surrendered the Gaza region to improve
Israel's security and ability to respond to terrorist attacks.
Netanyahu fulfilled Bar-On's expectations and criticized Sharon for the
unilateral expulsion of Jewish residents and military withdrawal from Gush Katif
and northern Gaza, which he said has turned Gaza in to "an Islamic terror
base." Netanyahu spoke on Israel Channel 2 television's Meet the Press
"That’s what I predicted…
I told the government [not to] give away the Philadelphi route, and they told me
I was fear-mongering," he stated. "The problem is we gave, we
uprooted…and didn’t get anything in exchange." He continued to attack
Sharon sharply, accusing him of "burying his head in the sand in the face
of threats from Gaza."
Netanyahu said he would not try to replace Sharon by lobbying the Knesset to
oust him as Prime Minister unless he quits the Likud Party. Sharon made no pubic
statements Saturday and concentrated efforts to influence mayors and Likud
activists to support his position in Monday's vote.

Analysis: Sharon has been driven into a
corner by Hamas
By Amos Harel,
If proof were needed that Israel wasn't to
blame for the explosions at the Hamas rally in Jabalya on Friday, the
political damage the new Gaza flare-up is doing to Ariel Sharon ought to
suffice. With critical timing - a day before a crucial Likud Central Committee
meeting - the Hamas Qassam barrage, proving that disengagement brought no
security, has driven the prime minister into a corner.
Under Sanhedrin control
and their mammon
Many central committee members were skeptical about the disengagement to begin
with; Benjamin Netanyahu will not even have to say
"I told you so." The soft underbelly of Sharon's big move has
been exposed. But who could have expected it to happen so soon, less than two
weeks after the last Israeli soldier left the Gaza Strip?
The Qassam fire substantiates some of the pessimistic
disengagement forecasts. The communities near the border have become
targets of any hostile activity; this transpired a few hours before the blasts
in Jabalya, when Islamic Jihad responded to the killing of three of its men
near Tul Karm with rocket fire at them.
Israel is really not to blame for the
escalation this time.
Sanhedrin is, for the settlers

But Israel could not afford even a moment's gloating at Hamas' "own
goal." As soon as Hamas had made its accusation, it was clear a rocket
attack would ensue and no denial or threat would have prevented it.
The defense establishment heads summoned urgently by Defense Minister Shaul
Mofaz Saturday morning knew they did not have many quick fixes left. Israel
failed to find a solution to the Qassam rockets during all the years of
conflict in the territories (the first rocket was fired in mid-2001).
It has advanced launching-tracing and warning systems, aerial presence and
partial protection for public institutions in the Qassam-stricken communities,
but if all the military operations into the Gaza Strip failed to stop the
fire, it is hard to see how that would change now.
THAT IS RIGHT
AND SANHEDRIN HAS PLANNED FOR TWO THOUSAND YEARS
Upon seizing the reins of government, the new
Noachide leaders will move quickly to implement a full agenda of reform.
... Full support will be given to Israeli forces to reinvade
PLO-controlled areas, with military assistance offered where necessary.
Jewish courts ... will be granted full legal sovereignty over Jewish citizens
within each country, who will no longer be subject to the authority of gentile
courts. The pre-existing Noachide judges and courts will replace the
existing court system of each country, and the legal code will be drastically
rewritten to conform to halacha.... .... And law and order will be
fully restored through the establishment of internal security measures, again
in accordance with Torah law. — Committee for Israeli Victory
Yesterday, large IDF forces gathered on the border in what appears at this
stage like an empty threat. A renewed entanglement in the Gaza Strip, so soon
after the pullout, would only demonstrate the enormity of the problem caused
by it. In the absence of a real solution, Israel decided to return to the old
arsenal of responses: striking at munitions warehouses and assassinating Hamas
activists in aerial strikes.
After the pullout from Lebanon, in May 2000, then-prime minister Ehud Barak
threatened "an unprecedented strike" for any Hezbollah belligerence.
But when Hezbollah abducted three soldiers in October that year, Barak barely
blinked. A week earlier the intifada had broken out and Israel, afraid of
opening another front, refrained from responding.
This time Israel also talked a lot before the pullout. Mofaz announced
"zero tolerance" to terror and Chief of Staff Dan Halutz said that
"we too have mortars." Now they have to
maneuver between a response strong enough to deter Hamas and a blow that might
lead to revenge terror attacks and deterioration.
Israel's approach is expected to
be extremely aggressive in the coming days. It is doubtful this would
spur the PA to take real action against Hamas. However, deliberate
deterioration could lead to European intervention to save the situation.
Otherwise, we will find ourselves once again with IDF troops in the Strip in a
When so much is at stake, Sharon might be driven to radical moves. Much
depends on the cool-headedness of the defense establishment chiefs in the next
couple of days. Since these are relatively new at their appointments, which
they owe Sharon, there may be cause for concern.

Settlers attack left-wing activists in West
Bank, injure two
By Nir Hasson, Haaretz
A group of settlers (Chabad
Hassidim) attacked left-wing activists in the Susiya region in the
southern Hebron Hills, leaving two lightly injured.
Seven activists from the left-wing organization Tayush visited the area Saturday
morning in an effort to document human rights violations
against local Palestinians by Israeli settlers.
The activists' main focus during the trip was the expansion of security zones in
Susiya which are off-limits to Palestinians despite the
fact that the zone extends into privately-owned land.
A member of the group, filmmaker Ra'anan
Alechsandrovic, was attacked by an armed settler after
attempting to videotape settlers throwing an object into a nearby well.
"He covered his face with his shirt and approached me," Alechsandrovic
said. "As soon as he got close to me, he struck me in
the head with the butt of his rifle."
"I fell to the floor and he tried to take my camera," he said.
The event was filmed by director Nissim Mosek, however, as settlers noticed him
recording, they attacked and managed to confiscate his camera.
"They took my walking stick, knocked me down and broke the stick over my
head," said Ezra Navi, a well-known veteran peace activist who was at the
scene. Settlers also punctured the tires on Navi's vehicle.
"They were very violent and they used shepherd's sticks," said another
member of the group of activists, Professor David Schulman. The activists said
that the attackers fled the scene before Israel Defense Forces soldiers arrived
at the scene.
Navi and Alechsandrovich required medical care for their injuries. Tayush
