NU/NRP Hoping for Massive Right-Wing Bloc
14:01 Mar 20, '06

By Hillel Fendel
||"Our goal has to be that the right-wing/religious
bloc wins 61 seats so that we can form a government," says
Benny Elon of the joint National Union-NRP list. "Every vote makes
The National Union and National Religious Party overcame large hurdles in
order to merge six weeks ago, thus avoiding the mutual recriminations that each
would have heaped on the other during the election campaign. Though they share
the same basic guidelines - which can be summed up as "The People of
Israel in the Land of Israel according to the Torah
(Talmud Bavli) of Israel" - they are running essentially
separate political campaigns.
MK Benny Elon, who heads the joint list, explained to Arutz-7 today that the
dual nature of the campaign is manifest both organizationally and in terms of
the political messages. "But our overall goal is the same," he said,
"and that is to head a united front of parties that will be an alternative
to the left-wing Olmert/Labor coalition."
Aholibah, Aholah's whore sister
Asked if most of his efforts during this campaign are on behalf of his party,
or for the sake of the right-wing bloc, MK Elon said,
"It's a good question, because in fact we have two goals: to be the
largest party within this bloc, and to make sure that it is
strong and powerful so that it can be a real alternative. At the start
of this electoral campaign, our parties attacked each other a lot, such as the
Likud against Yisrael Beiteinu, and the like. I felt that this was very
damaging, and I tried to change this, and I feel that these efforts have borne
fruit, and we are realizing that we have to work in a more united way. After
all, our common enemy is the feeling of despair
among many of our voters, and the feeling that they are fed up with politics.
The margins between the parties do not encourage people to come and vote - but
when we present it as a race between the party blocs, and when they see that
the gaps are narrowing, this wakes up people and they will realize that they
have to get out and vote. We are trying to drum it in: Every vote makes a
Arutz-7 asked, "If the religious/nationalist bloc does not get 61 seats,
will you view this as a failure?"
Elon: "If we don't get 61, we will no longer have the power of a bloc. I
won't be able to promise that individual parties will not join in with Kadima,
claiming that they are restraining it in some way or another."
A-7: "What about a charter among you saying that no one joins a Kadima
government without the other?"
Elon: "It won't work. Parties that want to join will say to me, 'Great,
let's all join, who's stopping you from joining?'"
A-7: "What about within your party? Will the NRP not want to join a Kadima
Elon: "We made sure, publicly and with signed commitments, that we would
not split up for at least two years, and that neither
side can join the government without the approval of our rabbis. [NRP
head Zevulun] Orlev just said a few days ago that he would not sit in a
government that uproots Jewish communities. Nothing is guaranteed, but I truly
don't think that this will be an issue."
Uri Bank, #16 on the joint list of Knesset candidates, explained that another
restraining factor is the fact that no matter how many Knesset seats the joint
party wins, "the National Union always has the majority. Therefore, the
NRP will not be able to split off without losing all its government funding -
without which a party cannot exist."
MK Elon was quoted recently as saying that another "challenge" facing
his party, and the right-wing bloc as a whole, is Baruch Marzel's Hazit [Jewish
National Front] party. "In the last election, he wasted over 34,000
votes," Elon said, "and this time the minimum threshold will be close
to 70,000 votes. It's impossible that he will reach this amount. If people want
to vote for Shas, it's less of a problem for me, but if they vote for Marzel,
that's simply throwing away votes. In 1992, when Rabin
won and brought us Oslo, the right-wing had more votes than the left -
but because of the various right-wing splinter parties we had and which didn't
make it into the Knesset, the left ended up with more Knesset mandates - and
Oslo was passed in the Knesset by one vote."
Samaria and Judea disengagement, unto War
Waging the campaign while undergoing daily radiation treatments for his
recently-diagnosed throat cancer, Elon explained why the NRP and NU are running
basically separate campaigns:
"We have two main obstacles to overcome: despair and apathy among some of
our voters, and those in both our camps who are not happy with our merger.
Therefore, we need something that will get both of our voter groups to come out
and vote for us - but this means two different messages. We both emphasize the
same things, but in different proportions. Traditionally, we have emphasized
Land of Israel and security issues, together with traditional Judaism, while
the NRP puts the accent more on Jewish and social issues.
"For instance, they [the NRP] will talk about strengthening the Bnei Akiva
youth movement and lowering yeshiva high school tuition, while we would talk
about youth movements in general... Certainly, in terms of logistics and
organization, we each have our ways of working, in terms of local chapters and
knowing the voters, etc."
The nationalist camp of voters appears to be waking up.
A poll this week by Brain Base, headed by Prof. Yitzchak Katz, finds that
though only some 60% of the electorate says it will vote - a record-low turnout
- that number is 90% among those who support the NU-NRP. Katz finds that the
joint list could receive 11 Knesset seats; other polls have given it only 8-9

Moving Rightward Campaign, Ignoring Polls,
13:42 Mar 17, '06
/ 17 Adar 5766
By Hillel Fendel
||With only 11 days before the national
Kadima still leading
but with over 20% of the voters still undecided, the "Moving
Rightward" campaign is gaining steam and intensity.
Thousands of people are taking active part in the campaign, the idea of
which is simple: To convince Kadima voters - many of whom voted in the past for
right-wing parties - to vote once again for a religious
and/or right-wing party.
The method is also straightforward: Hundreds of pairs of volunteers go
door-to-door every evening, mainly in the greater Tel Aviv area, to speak with
potential voters. Others stay at home and make phone calls to people in areas
that voted heavily for the Likud in the last election.
Many of the callers and visitors report success. "One man whom I called
told me he was planning not to vote on Election Day but rather to make a
barbecue," a Beit El man said. "After a short talk, the man said,
'OK, you're right. For the sake of the Gush Katif
expellees, I will vote for a right-wing party - and I'll bring my wife
along as well.'"
In another case, a 17-year-old girl found herself on the phone with a soldier
who said he had taken part in the expulsion from Gush Katif. By the end of the
conversation, he admitted he had been wrong, and even - with
the help of a follow-up call later by the girl's rabbi - agreed to hold a
parlor meeting on behalf of the National Union/NRP in his home.
"I don't talk to them about the dangers I foresee to
my own house and community if Kadima wins," said one Face-to-Facer,
"but rather about the country, about themselves. Most of the population
lives between Hadera and Gedera, the area known as the Coastal Plain, and
I want them to think about what it will be like when this entire area will be
adjacent to the Palestinian Authority and at its mercies, just like now
in Ashkelon and Sderot. I feel that I'm on a mission to clarify to them what Kadima
and the left will bring them."
The anger of Sanhedrin, whom all the kings of the
earth are drunken with her Cup of Iniquity
A bulletin board in one of the larger Jewish communities in Judea
and Samaria featured this message:
"You certainly are not threatened by any of the parties in this election.
There is no chance that you will find yourself several months from now with
your life's work destroyed and your family living out of cartons and suitcases
in a glittering-gold refugee camp. There are no parties 'promising' that it
won't happen to you. So you certainly don't have to make any special efforts
for this election campaign. So you can go back to sleep now..."
Mt:24:16: Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
One woman reported at 10:20 one evening this week,
"So many people I call simply don't know who to vote for. They say that
they and their families just don't know what to do. I spoke to about four
people for about ten minutes each, and I felt that they received, for the first
time, a reason to really consider voting for one of the
parties on the religious-right..."
Yaakov Sternberg, one of the national organizers of the campaign, told Arutz-7,
"Every evening we have 1,000 people calling, and over 1,000 going out to
visit - and the numbers are rising." He said, "I overheard one
conversation in which the person on the other end at first said he was planning
to vote for Labor, but by the end of the conversation said that he would vote
either Likud or Shas..."
Eli Alali, organizing the campaign in his area on behalf of the Karnei Shomron
Yeshiva, (Talmud Bavli school) said,
"Most of those who say they are voting for Kadima, are doing so because
'everyone else is.' The number of those who are voting Kadima out of ideology
is very small. Most don't know what the party stands for. When we talked with Sephardim
about Kadima's platform on Judaism, for instance, they immediately either
changed their minds or said they would consider voting for another party.
With other people, just talking about the ramifications of the disengagement
was enough to get them to change their minds about voting for Kadima. Many
Kadima voters are simply people who are in despair."

In a further degradation of food safety standards, the Bush
Administration's USDA is now allowing rabbit, cat
and dog meat to be mixed with ground beef and sold. Andrew Martin
of the Chicago Tribune reports:
A short notice from the United States Department of Agriculture has
created a stir-and perhaps a wave of nausea-among the nation’s meat
“FSIS NOTICE 15-06: Use of Non-Amenable Animal Tissue in Inspected
Products,” the notice essentially says that animals that you
wouldn’t normally associate with hamburgers can be “included in
amenable meat or poultry products produced in official
In other words, anything
from deer to dog meat can be ground into hamburger, as long as it
meets state regulations, which inspectors say tend to be looser than the
Martin asked Steven Cohen,
spokesman for the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service, if dog meat
really could be mixed with beef and sold to consumers across America:
“I don’t believe that it is illegal,
but there is no place that is producing dog meat,” Cohen said, adding
that the regulation fits a “very limited circumstance. “I don’t
think there’s anyone who is doing this on a commercial basis.”
But roadkill wouldn’t qualify because, since the animal wasn’t
slaughtered, it would be considered adulterated, he said.
According to Martin, even migratory birds could
be added to the mix:
Non-amenable animal tissue, as defined in the notice, is any tissue
from animals not subject to inspection under the Federal Meat Inspection
Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act. It
includes edible tissue from exotic animals, rabbits, migratory birds and
other animals not under the scope of USDA inspection, like alligator and
This is especially troubling because state inspections are often much
weaker than the USDA's – which itself has been
weakened by the Bush Administration. With Bird Flu a real threat, allowing
the admixture of migratory bird tissue with beef is asking for trouble –
And how has this announcement affected the nation's already
disheartened Food Inspectors?
News of the notice swept through the community of meat inspectors
after one of them sent an email to USDA’s technical support center
asking for clarification. In response to a question, Kris Kenne, a USDA
staff officer, said someone could mix deer meat with pork and sell deer
dogs with a USDA logo as long as the ingredients were labeled and state
law allowed it.
Does this also mean that a slaughtered cat or dog can be added to
sausage, Kenne was asked?
“Yes, that is a possibility should one wish
to pursue to use them as an ingredient in the product. Public
perception may not be so acceptable of the practice though,” Kenne

- Pentagon 'Hedge'
Strategy Targets China
By Bill Gertz
The Washington Times
- The Pentagon is moving
strategic bombers to Guam and aircraft carriers and submarines to the
Pacific as part of a new "hedge"
strategy aimed at preparing for conflict with China, Pentagon officials said
- Peter Rodman, assistant
defense secretary for international security affairs, told a congressional
commission that the response to the emerging military threat from China is
part of the White House national security strategy made public yesterday.
- Although U.S. relations with
China are good, "both sides understand very well that there is a
potential for a conflict, particularly in the Taiwan Strait," Mr.
Rodman said during a hearing of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review
- China's arms buildup in recent
years altered the U.S. "strategic calculus" for defending Taiwan
from a mainland attack and shows that "a prudent hedging policy is
essential," Mr. Rodman said.
- The placement of about 700
Chinese missiles opposite Taiwan has changed the status quo between the
non-communist island and the communist mainland, he said.
- The Pentagon policy calls for
watching China's military and "being ready to deal with it, if the
worst case should happen," Mr. Rodman said.
- James Thomas, deputy assistant
defense secretary for plans, said key elements of the "hedging"
policy are aimed at nations with uncertain futures, including China and
- Cooperation is preferred, but
the Pentagon must prepare "for the possibility that others could choose
a more hostile path," Mr. Thomas said.
- "In [the China] part of
the hedging strategy, we're looking at the deployments of bomber elements to
Guam on a more routine basis," he said. "We're also looking at
making adjustments in our naval posture globally, shifting to six carrier
battle groups in the Pacific region, given the shift in global transport and
trade, as well as over the next several years shifting approximately 60
percent of our attack submarine fleet to the Pacific."
- The public term for the
strategy is "hedge," but in internal Pentagon discussions the term
is "effective preparations to swiftly defeat Chinese aggression,"
one defense official said.
- The comments about a conflict
contrast with statements by Pentagon officials that have sought to minimize
the emerging threat from China.
- The plan calls for frequent
rotations of B-2 strategic bombers to Guam, part of what the Air Force calls
its global strike mission to reach crisis areas quickly. Special hangars and
other deployment and maintenance facilities are being built on Guam, a U.S.
territory about 1,800 miles from the Chinese coast.
- Three attack submarines are
based in Guam, and arms storage there includes long-range air-launched
cruise missiles and Joint Direct Attack Munitions.
- Adm. William J. Fallon,
commander of the Pacific Command, has visited Guam and told reporters that
the island will become a pivot point for U.S. forces in the Pacific because
of the relatively short distances to the Taiwan Strait, South Korea and
- Yesterday, Mr. Thomas said the
Pentagon is strengthening alliances in Asia as part of the strategy.

Britain breaks with the US over Iran
By Patrick Seale
DUBAI: Britain has told the United States that it will not
take part in any armed action against Iran’s nuclear sites, according to
diplomatic sources in London. Already facing huge public criticism for his
participation in the Iraq war, Prime Minister Tony Blair is seeking to distance
himself from America’s belligerent rhetoric towards Iran.
Blair knows he would probably not survive the political storm
if Britain joined in an attack on Iran. The concern in Whitehall, however, is
that the Bush administration, egged on by Israel and its powerful friends in the
United States, risks developing an unstoppable momentum towards
war a war in which Britain clearly wants no part.
There is a real fear that if Iran refuses to yield to
pressure either by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) or by the UN
Security Council to which Iran was formally referred on March 8 then the US
would be left with no other option than to strike. The US
may indeed have boxed itself into a corner by its threats, which Iran has
The view in Whitehall is that if America attacks Iran, it
will have to do so alone or with Israel. In private
discussions, British officials have made clear that any
sort of military campaign against Iran would be "madness".
Despite its close alliance with the US, British Foreign
Secretary Jack Straw has departed publicly from aggressive statements by senior
US officials. He has ruled out military action by Britain against Iran as
Last week, Britain announced it was pulling 800 men out of
Iraq one tenth of its force there. This is seen as a signal that Britain
is seeking to limit its involvement in America’s wars, rather than take on
Carefully monitoring opinion in Washington, British officials
have noted with alarm that the advocates of confrontation with Iran, both inside
and outside the administration, have triumphed over the few brave souls who
dared argue in favour of dialogue and engagement.
Analysts in London are now convinced
that Washington’s real aim is "regime change" in Tehran, an ambition
which goes far beyond merely delaying or halting Iran’s nuclear programme.
The Washington Post reported this week that
Iran had moved to the top of America’s national security agenda. Quite
apart from the large teams devoted to the Iran problem in the Pentagon and the
intelligence agencies, 10 people are now working full time on the Iran desk at
the State Department, and an American outpost of Tehran-watchers has been
established in the Gulf.
Earlier this month US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
declared: "We may face no greater challenge from a single country than from
Iran whose policies are directed at developing a Middle East that would be 180
