Iran Reaches Key Step in
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran has successfully enriched uranium for the first
time, a major development in its fuel cycle technology, news agencies quoted
former President Hashemi Rafsanjani as saying Tuesday.
Current President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad added that Iran
"will soon join the club of countries with nuclear technology."
The U.N. Security Council has demanded that Iran stop all uranium enrichment
activity by April 28. Iran has rejected the demand, saying it has a right to
develop the process.
The comments by the Iranian officials came as the head of the U.N. nuclear
watchdog agency, Mohammed ElBaradei, was due to visit Tehran this week for talks
on the nuclear standoff.
Officials with his International Atomic Energy Agency have said he is hoping
to win at least partial concessions from Iran. IAEA inspectors are currently in
Iran visiting two key facilities.
Rafsanjani's comment, carried by the Kuwait News Agency. was the first
disclosure that Iran had successfully enriched uranium since February, when it
began research at its enrichment facility in the town of Natanz.
Rafsanjani did not disclose the amount of uranium that Iran had enriched
through the facility's 164 centrifuges, but he said it would put the country in
a good position for ElBaradei's visit.
"When ElBaradei arrives in Iran, he will face new circumstances,"
Rafsanjani said, according to KUNA.
"Iran has put into operation the first unit of 164 centrifuges, has
injected (uranium) gas and has reached industrial production," the news
agency quoted him as saying.
"We should expand the work of these machines to achieve a full
industrial line. We need dozens of these units (sets of 164 centrifuges) to
achieve a uranium enrichment facility," he said.
Enriching uranium to a low level produces fuel for nuclear reactors. To a
higher level, it produces the material for a nuclear bomb.
Iran would require thousands of operating centrifuges to produce enough
uranium for either purpose.
In Vienna, IAEA officials declined to comment on the report. A diplomat
familiar with Tehran's enrichment program said the report appeared to be
accurate. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not
authorized to discuss information restricted to the agency.
A spokesman for the British Foreign Office recalled
that Iran was under Security Council orders to "resume full and sustained
suspension of all its enrichment."
"The latest Iranian statement is not particularly helpful," the
spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government
Ahmadinejad had promised Monday to announce "good nuclear news"
On Monday, Tehran shrugged off reports that the United States is drawing
backup plans for military action against Iran over its nuclear activities,
saying they were an attempt to scare it into halting its program and warning any
attack would bring a "suitable response."
Several American media reports over the weekend said the Bush administration
was studying options for military strikes against Iran to stop its nuclear
program. The New Yorker magazine raised the possibility of using atomic bombs
against Iran's underground nuclear sites.
President Bush said Monday the reports were "wild speculation." He
said his vow to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons "doesn't mean
force necessarily. In this case it means diplomacy."
But the White House was not ruling out a military response and said
"normal defense and intelligence planning" was under way.

Sharon Declared Permanently
Apr 11 12:09 PM US/Eastern
With his chair empty and a small brown gavel lying
untouched in front of it, ailing Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon was declared permanently incapacitated by Israel's Cabinet on
Tuesday, officially ending his five-year tenure.
Sharon, 78, suffered a devastating stroke Jan. 4 and has been in a coma
After the stroke, Sharon's deputy, Ehud Olmert immediately stepped in as his
temporary replacement. Olmert has since won national elections as leader of the
centrist Kadima Party, and has become the designated prime minister, assigned
the task of forming a coalition government.
Tuesday's declaration was largely symbolic in nature
since Olmert has been Israel's de facto leader since January, and because
medical experts believe Sharon's chances of recovery are slim.
Under Israeli law, an ailing prime minister can only have a temporary
replacement for up to 100 days before an official successor must be named.
That deadline expires Friday, but because the weeklong Jewish Passover holiday
begins Wednesday, the declaration of permanent incapacitation was moved up to
"Today, we realize that he is not with us anymore in the political
arena, that he could not see the results of what he initiated, the Kadima
Party," said Cabinet minister Meir Sheetrit of Kadima.
Cabinet Secretary Israel Maimon noted at the beginning of a special Cabinet
session that Friday marks the end of the 100-day period.
"According to the law, at the end of 100 days, the government must
appoint a minister from his party as the acting prime minister, until the
establishment of a new government. The suggestion laid forth today is to appoint
the head of the Kadima party, the acting prime minister Ehud Olmert, as the
prime minister in practice."
Sharon has been lying unconscious since his stroke. Last week, surgeons
reattached a portion of his skull removed in previous surgery. It was his eighth
operation since he fell ill.
Sharon underwent a CT scan on Monday to determine the outcome of surgery on
his skull last week, Hadassah Hospital spokesman Ron Krumer said. The scan
revealed no change in his condition, which the hospital defines as "serious
but stable," meaning that his life is not in immediate danger.
Hadassah officials have said that discussions were still under way on whether
to move Sharon to a long-term care facility. Experts say his chances of recovery
are extremely slim, given the gravity of his stroke and his persistent coma.
Sharon suffered the stroke weeks after leaving the hawkish Likud Party and
forming the new centrist Kadima movement, pledging to pull out of large parts of
the West Bank and draw Israel's final borders by 2010.
Sharon had been expected to coast to a third straight term as prime minister,
and his removal from the political scene shocked Israelis.
Led by Olmert, Sharon's heir apparent, Kadima won last month's Israeli
election, although by a smaller margin that was expected when Sharon led the
party. Analysts have said the party's popularity was a result of Sharon's

"Acharon Shel Pesach"
means the last day of Pesach.
A principle in Torah is that "one ascends in sanctity." Thus , despite
the lofty nature of the first days of Pesach,
Acharon shel Pesach is
loftier yet…Indeed, Acharon shel Pesach
is uniquely associated with Moshiach
- as stressed in the Haftorah, and evidenced by "Moshiach's
banquet" being held then.
…Mochiach will concern himself with every
Jew. Our Sages tell us that Moshe Rabeinu, the "redeemer of Israel,"
when he saw that one lamb had strayed from his flock, left the flock and chased
after the lamb to bring it back. Every Jew was precious to Moshe, even a Jew who
had "strayed" away. So to with Moshiach:
Every Jew, whoever he may be, is most precious to him
will redeem every Jew, each Jew must make the proper preparations to this event
- beginning with his participation in "Moshiach's
banquet." And because "one mitzvah causes another mitzvah," this
participation will bring other efforts to hasten the true and complete

…The Meor Einayim writes, in the name of the
Baal Shem Tov, that "every Jew must rectify
and prepare that part of Moshiach's

Every person called "adam" (and all Jews are called adam) has in
himself the levels of Adam, David and Moshiach.
Adam - because all men are his offspring. David - because he is "King of
Israel," and the king is the life and existence of the country and its
citizens. Likewise. Every Jew has part of Moshiach's
soul within him.

…The Meor Einayim continues to say,
"every Jew must prepare that part of the level of Moshiach
applicable to his soul, until all the 'body' will be rectified and prepared, and
there will be a general unity speedily in our days." In other words, the
service of every Jew is to awaken and reveal the level of "Moshiach"
in his soul, and to ensure that this "Moshiach"
will redeem him and everything related to him. This is his personal redemption,
similar to the general redemption through Moshiach.

Esther Pollard: Bush is Willing to Free
Pollard This Week
Monday, April 10, 2006 / 12
Jonathan Pollard's wife Esther said this
morning that U.S. President Bush is ready to free the imprisoned Israeli - but
that Prime Minister-designate Ehud Olmert has to make the request.
Speaking on Channel Two's Monday morning television talk
program, Esther Pollard said, "Someone who is very
close to President Bush came to me last night and said that Bush is ready
to free Jonathan even in time for the upcoming Passover
holiday [which starts Wednesday night] - as long as Olmert makes an
She said that the source with whom she spoke is "known very well to Mr.
Olmert as trustworthy and having close ties with the U.S. President."
"I am willing to meet with Olmert even today," Mrs. Pollard said,
"if he invites me, in order to give him the information I have."
A staffer in the Prime Minister's Office told Arutz-7 that such a meeting
"would be considered" if Mrs. Pollard would turn to them and ask for
MK Uri Ariel also called on Olmert today to ask President Bush for Pollard's
The Committee to Free Jonathan Pollard faxed a letter to Olmert today, entitled,
"Re: An Urgent Official Request to President Bush to Release Pollard."
The committee writes, "According to the information we have, Bush is
willing to respond favorably to a request of this nature, and is anticipating
such a request from you."
The letter also noted that before the Moslem holy month of Ramadan, the United
States freed 1,000 Iraqis as a good-will holiday gesture to the Sunnis.
"We are surprised," the Committee writes, "that you have not yet
officially asked President Bush to free Jonathan Pollard as a Passover holiday
gesture to the Jewish people... The fact that Israel, after 21 years, does not
make an official and serious request for its agent's
release in honor of the holiday gives the impression that we are not
interested in him."
The Committee adds that Pollard has been imprisoned far longer than those who
were freed after spying for the United States' enemies.
Jonathan Pollard was a U.S. Navy intelligence analyst in
the 1980's when he came across information vital to Israel's security that was
not being transferred to the Jewish state - contrary to an
intelligence-sharing agreement between the U.S. and Israel. He then passed along
the information to Israel, ultimately helping Israel to protect itself from
Iraqi missiles. He was later caught while trying to find asylum in the Israeli
Embassy in Washington. Despite a plea bargain agreement, he received a life
sentence with no parole for an offense that usually nets 2-4 years. In failing
health, Jonathan Pollard is now in his 21st year of that sentence.
Despite the wide exposure his cause has received, many in
the Jewish community continue to view Pollard as a traitor who deserves to
remain in prison. He continues to be accused of having caused major harm
to U.S. interests, including endangering American agents in the Soviet Union.
However, it is now known that a central force behind the promulgation of this
impression was the man who actually betrayed the said U.S. agents in Russia -
CIA agent-turned-KGB mole Aldrich Ames. Ames, finally arrested for spying in
1994, revealed to the Russians the names of every American spy in the Soviet
Union, leading to the execution of several of them. As former Justice Department
attorney John Loftus has documented, it was Ames himself, before he was caught,
who was assigned the task of preparing the damage assessment of Pollard's
activities - and he used the opportunity to attribute to Pollard the crimes that
he himself had committed.
Speaking with Channel Two today, Mrs. Pollard had harsh words for incoming
Knesset Member Rafi Eitan, head of the Pensioners Party. The Pensioners won an
unexpected seven Knesset seats in the recent election because of what is felt to
be a protest vote by young and/or disenchanted voters. Eitan was Pollard's
handler in the U.S. on behalf of the Mossad; Pollard charges that Eitan later
held up a document that could have led to his release.
"He has shaken off his responsibility for Jonathan ever since the day of
his capture," Mrs. Pollard said about Eitan today. She charged that Eitan
once said that if he were present when Pollard tried to find asylum in the
Israeli Embassy, he would have "shot him in the head, thus ending the
Pollard affair before it even began."
Asked about Pollard last week, Eitan said only, "I would very much like to
see this man go free." He has also been quoted as saying that he has worked
for Pollard's release, and that he hopes that when he is appointed as Cabinet
minister in Olmert's new government, he would be able to use his influence to
have Pollard freed.
Jonathan Pollard himself told Maariv newspaper that Eitan "betrayed me and
abandoned me for 21 years," and even testified falsely against him to the

Study With Orthodox Students
second-year rabbinical student Will Friedman sat down to review a passage of
Talmud on Monday, he was greeted by a study partner who wore a scholar's intent
expression and V-neck sweater — along with a clerical collar.
Deniau, archbishop of Montpelier, France, was one of nearly
three-dozen Catholic clerics who spent the morning with students of New York's
fledgling, liberal Modern Orthodox rabbinical school, Yeshivat Chovevei Torah.
There, for the first time, he found himself poring over
one the Talmud's most commonly studied passages, in the tractate Berakhot, or
