More IDF Strikes in Operation Summer Rains
14:44 Jun 30, '06 / 4 Tammuz 5766
by Hana Levi Julian
Israel Defense Forces are pounding Gaza with artillery and air strikes in order to pressure the population to force Hamas terrorists to give up their hostage, 19-year-old IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert froze Phase III of Operation Summer Rains on
Thursday night at the request of Egyptian officials who were meeting with Hamas
terrorists in an effort to persuade them to release their Israeli captive.
He did not, however, hold back IDF troops from continuing the operation that was already in play. More than 500 artillery shells have been fired by the IDF in Gaza in the past 24 hours.
An Israel Air Force helicopter fired at an Islamic Jihad terrorist as he attempted to launch a Kassam rocket at Israeli forces. 25-year-old Abdel Rael later succumbed to his wounds, the first to die since the start of the IDF operation.
IAF jets scored direct hits on close to a dozen targets in the wee hours before dawn on Friday. In Gaza City alone, the Palestinian Authority Interior Ministry was struck, as was a Fatah office and a Hamas terrorist training camp. PA Interior Minister Said Siyam’s office was targeted because it was “a meeting place to plan and direct terror activity,” said IDF sources.
A missile also hit a Kassam rocket factory operated by the Fatah terrorist group, the Al-Aksa Martyrs’ Brigades.
Also on Friday, IDF troops operating in southern Gaza fired at a terror cell aiming at an army position with an anti-tank rocket launcher. The terrorists managed to escape, but it is believed that two of the attackers were wounded.
The strikes will continue, said IDF spokesman, Cpt. Jacob Dallal, until the terrorists free Shalit and end their Kassam rocket attacks against Israel. Dallal said the operation is being carried out “in a calibrated, studied fashion.”
Dallal reiterated that the goal of Operation Summer Rains is simple: “to gain the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit.” Putting an end to the non-stop barrage of Kassam rocket attacks against Sderot and other western Negev communities is a second goal of the operation as well.
And the Noahide enforcement of Ishmael
“We hope that this will work and that [Shalit] will be freed as soon as possible,” said Dallal.

Temple Mount Ramp to Be Removed
12:53 Jun 30, '06 / 4 Tammuz 5766
by Hana Levi Julian
A ramp which leads from the Western Wall to the Temple Mount will be removed by the Israel Antiquities Authority soon, putting into action a plan that has been on the table for the past two years.
The Mugrabi ramp, located in one of the most politically,
militarily and spiritually sensitive places in the world, was nonetheless deemed
unstable in February 2004 after one of its supporting walls collapsed in the
Western Wall plaza.
At the time, city engineers said the ramp, which is used by non-Muslim visitors to enter the Temple Mount, should be removed. The ramp is also used by security services to access the area during riots.
The plan was put on hold, however, due to political and security concerns. General Security Service representatives nixed the idea, as did the Prime Minister’s military secretary. Plans for archaeological excavations at the site were also held up for fear of Muslim riots.
“Now that the Palestinian Authority is paralyzed and incapable of resisting,” an unnamed source told the Haaretz news service, “it is an excellent opportunity to carry out the plan.”
Fears of bloodshed nonetheless haunt archaeologists. “Digging in this place goes way beyond the archaeological sphere,” warned archaeologist Meir Ben Dov on Thursday. “This place is far too sensitive and the price would be much too high,” he said.
The Western Wall Heritage Fund was given responsibility for the holiest area in the world in January 2005. The organization is linked with Jewish groups that actively settle areas in East Jerusalem.

Archaeologists also opposed a plan by the Fund to build a bridge in place of the ramp, saying the structure would severely damage the archaeological site south of the ramp. The Israeli government had contributed NIS 5 million to the plan at the time.

Gimmel Tamuz: The Hilula of the Lubavitcher
14:39 Jun 30, '06 / 4 Tammuz 5766
by Jacob Benesch
Twelve years ago on “Gimmel Tamuz”, 3 Tammuz 5754 (June12, 1994), the Lubavitcher Rebbe zt”l was laid to rest next to his father-in-law-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzhak Schneerson z”tl.
Rabbi Schneerson (OF THE TREASONOUS BLASPHEMOUS NOAHIDE
LAW OF THEIR DRAGON IN WASHINGTON DC, HJR104, PL 102-14) would go to his
father-in-law’s grave to pray for the thousands of people
(Praying unto the dead) who sent him notes several times each week.
He would meticulously read each one of the thousands of notes he would receive
from every individual in need of prayers. After reading the note, he would tear
it in half and leave it as a memento.
Not much has changed since. The small red house near his tomb looks like any other -- from the outside. Walking in the front door, however, leads one into a whole different world: the Rebbe’s world.
A video monitor hangs in the corner near the ceiling, playing a tape of one of the Rebbe’s farbrengens. It is a way of sharing the experience with those who remember it, and those who never had the privilege.
privilege of anti-Christ
When the Rebbe would lead a Farbrengen, literally “spending time together” in Yiddish, it was an emotional Torah learning gathering that was punctuated by singing and dancing. This memory often bring tears to his followers.
wailing for Tammuz, see Ezekiel 8
A couple of small tables and a few chairs are placed in the center of the room, each with blank paper and pencils available. This allows the visitor to write a pidyon nefesh, called a "pon" -- a note to the Rebbe. After reading it the visitor tears up the note and tosses it into a pile of previous requests, invitations and simple updates on one’s life.
Communicating with the DEAD
The visitor is in awe. Chassidic men and women shuckle (rock or sway), (bob back and forth) as they pray with the intensity of an Olympic athlete. Some weep quietly and others stand in silence, communicating without words as do we all at the beginning of life.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe was born on the 11th of Nissan 5662 in the small Ukranian town Nikolaev. The year was 1905. Frightened families hid from a raging pogrom in their neighborhood. They tried to hide their frightened and screaming children. The last thing in the world that they wanted was for their children to be discovered. It was young Mendel who came to the rescue. He offered soothing words and the smooth touch of a child’s hand to comfort his peers.
Cause he was friend with that Nasi of that generation
The Rebbe loved all people: men, women, and children. As an adult, he saw a child’s unique perspective to life as something advantageous to all. In essence, the Rebbe taught that an adult enhances his learning experience by learning from a child as well. He also taught that the purpose of an education was not only prepare a child for adulthood, but also as a to help him or her preserve childhood gifts in the most positive way available.

Children of the World to their Dragon, HJR 104, PL 102-14
It was in this light that that the Rebbe established a major Lubavitch organization, Tzivos Hashem in1980, calling it the “children’s army” that would bring the ultimate redemption to the world through the mitzvot of each individual child. He considered every little boy and girl to be a crown jewel.
The children of the world, who dwell upon the earth who
worship the beast
In 1935 he founded the Lubavitch Women’s Organization, which helped change the way women study Torah today. Essentially the Rebbe broke down the barriers that limited Torah study to men and boys. When he sent men out to the streets to put on Tefillin with their Jewish brethren on the streets, he would also send women out to the shopping malls and the markets to distribute Shabbat candles.
and Lure the men "Goy" to their lairs
The Rebbe also knew how to speak many languages, all fluently. This was most obvious when he would distribute dollars every Sunday at “770”, Lubavitch World Headquarters, named for the address of the building on Eastern Parkway in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.
and Flight 77, and 7/07 London "Terror"

The Rebbe would give a dollar to each person who came to receive his blessing so that he or she could perform the mitzvah of giving tzedakah- either with the dollar he gave, or more often with a dollar the recipient exchanged for it.
Mammon their god of choice, the shembol
Sometimes the Rebbe would give two or even three—and he would tell his visitor what each was for. “This is for your daughter, this is for you, and this is for a refuah shelamah for…”

Israel strips four Hamas officials of Jerusalem residency
In his first public address since Israel began
its offensive into the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Prime
Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas on Friday said his government would not cave
into Israeli demands but said he was working hard to end a five-day-old crisis
Though Haniyeh did not directly address Israel's demand that Palestinian militants hand over Israel Defense Forces soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit, abducted on Sunday, he implied that the government would not trade him for eight Cabinet ministers and 56 other Hamas officials arrested on Thursday.

The newspaper says that Jerusalem would agree to release the prisoners only after Shalit's release into international or Egyptian custody.
The proposed deal, which is being mediated by Egypt, would also include an Israeli pledge to withdraw its forces to the Green Line (apparently outside of the Gaza Strip, Y.S.) and the reopening of Gaza trade crossings.
Both sides would also commit to a month-long hudna (ceasefire) during which Israel would refrain from targeted killings and Palestinian armed groups would agree to a halt of Qassam rocket fire.
Israel strips J'lem residency from Hamas deputies
Israel on Friday revoked the Jerusalem residency of four Hamas legislators, including one cabinet minister, in an unprecedented punishment that takes away their right to live in the holy city and travel freely in Israel, officials said.
In April, Interior Minister Roni Bar-On informed Minister for Jerusalem Affairs Khaled Abu Arafa and three members of the Palestinian parliament Mohammed Abu Tir, Ahmed Abu Atoun and Mahmoud Totah that they must renounce their membership in the militant Islamic group if they were to continue to have residency rights in Jerusalem.
The four officials were among Israel arrested in an overnight raid on Thursday.
Residents of East Jerusalem enjoy a wide range of social benefits including pension and health care. Israeli-issued identity cards grant them permanent residency in Jerusalem and freedom of movement in Israel.
The special arrangement is part of the conflict over Jerusalem. Israel captured the traditionally Arab sector in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed it a few weeks later. Israel offered citizenship to the Palestinians there, but few accepted. However, Israel gave ID cards to them that are almost identical to the ones Israeli citizens carry.
Except they have a yellow
star on them?
Israel says that according to interim peace accords, the Palestinians are not allowed to conduct political activity in Jerusalem. Israel considers Hamas a terror organization. Hamas, whose charter calls for the destruction of Israel, has refused international requests to renounce violence, recognize Israel and abide by interim peace deals.

AG refuses to okay use of Hamas officials as 'bargaining chips'
Attorney General Menachem Mazuz refused a request by the Shin Bet security service and the government to place dozens of senior Hamas officials under administrative detention or hold them as "bargaining chips" under the Unlawful Combatants Law.
Mazuz insisted that the arrests be carried out under ordinary criminal warrants that would require legal proceedings against the Hamas officials under the Prevention of Terror Ordinance. They will probably be charged with membership in or leadership of a terrorist organization.
The detainees will be brought before a judge for a remand hearing within the next 96 hours, and legal proceedings against them will be carried out in military courts in the territories.

Israel intends to arrest more senior Hamas figures in addition to the dozens of Palestinian lawmakers and ministers arrested in a predawn raid Thursday, the Justice Ministry said Thursday.

The detention of Hamas parliamentarians in the early hours of Thursday morning had been planned several weeks ago and received approval from Mazuz on Wednesday. The same day, Shin Bet Director Yuval Diskin presented Prime Minister Ehud Olmert with the list of Hamas officials slated for detention.

Thousands protest across Mideast against Gaza offensive
By The Associated Press
Thousands of protesters in several Muslim countries took to the streets Friday in response to the Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
Note, they had to say Muslim countries
In Egypt, protesters rallied in one of the country's main mosques, with many calling on Arab governments to take action to protect the Palestinians.

Hundreds of security forces in riot gear lined up alongside Cairo's Al-Azhar Mosque during the protest, which followed weekly prayers.
They made no attempt to crack down on the demonstration, however, as police commanders said they wanted to avoid a confrontation even though the protest was organized by one of the government's top rivals, the Muslim Brotherhood.

The crowd remained largely inside the mosque's courtyard and did not attempt to march outside, where the large security force was gathered.
Demonstrators rally in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Turkey
In a sermon Friday, Lebanon's most senior Shiite Muslim cleric denounced what he called "the war to annihilate the Palestinian people ... by the malicious, racist Jewish army."
Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah told some 5,000 worshippers at a mosque in southern Beirut that Arabs and Muslims must support "the Palestinian people who are strongly standing fast against western racism that is backing Jewish racism."
Some 100 Palestinians staged a sit-in outside the U.N. building in downtown Beirut Friday to protest the Israeli incursion into Gaza and demanded world action to protect the Palestinians.
In Jordan, some 400 Palestinian worshippers marched in the streets of Baqaa refugee camp on the outskirts of Amman.
Both rallies ended peacefully.
In Syria, some 500 Palestinians marched the Yarmouk refugee camp after prayers in a Hamas-organized protest.
"Resisting the Zionists is a national and religious duty," read one banner raised by the protesters as a Hamas member, speaking through a loudspeaker, called for more abductions of Israeli soldiers.
It is Sanhedrin

His words were met by chants from the crowd: "We want to return to Palestine," and "the stone has turned into a Kalashnikov," in reference to the throwing of rocks at Israeli forces during the first intifada, Arabic for uprising, that began in 1987.
Some 24 children clutching a 10-meter Palestinian flag headed the procession.
"I'm here to protest the killing and destruction of the Palestinian people," said 32-year-old Maha Jamil.
In Turkey, thousands of angry protesters burned Israeli flags and chanted pro-Hamas slogans.
Hundreds of women, many wearing black chadors or Islamic-style head scarves, carried Palestinian flags and yelled, "Murderer Israel, get out of Palestine!"
A man with a loud speaker warned Israel that it was turning Turkey's 70 million Muslims against it. "Inshallah (God willing), all of Turkey will show in coming days that it is behind Palestine!" he said.
"Inshallah!" the crowd yelled back.
As protesters streamed out of the Beyazid Mosque after prayers and began to fill the square, police said they estimated that 5,000 people had shown up.
Later, they downgraded that estimate to 2,000.
The protesters briefly chanted, "Islam will rule the world."
Young men wearing checkered kaffiyeh scarves wrapped around their faces chanted as they burned Israeli flags, and the entire crowd yelled "Greetings to Hamas, continue the resistance!"
Police wearing riot gear surrounded the square, but there were no arrests and no violent incidents.

UN aid chief warns Gaza is on the verge of humanitarian crisis
By The Associated Press
Gaza is three days away
from a deadly humanitarian crisis unless Israel promptly restores fuel and
electricity to the densely populated area after its offensive to free an
abducted soldier, the United Nations aid chief warned on Thursday.
"They are heading for the abyss unless they get electricity and fuel restored," said Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland, who also urged the Palestinians to free the soldier and clamp down on militants firing rockets into Israel.
Without clean water in the hot summer weather, "we would in days see a major humanitarian crisis," he said. Military action targeting innocent civilians violates international humanitarian law, he added.
"I am confident that neither of
the two want to see a massive increase in mortality in the Gaza,"
make up about half of the area's 1.4 million people,
Egeland told a small group of reporters.
At the heart of the crisis, he said, was Israel's bombing of Gaza's sole power plant, which supplies about 40 percent of the area's electricity. The remaining power comes from Israel.
An estimated 130 Gaza wells require electricity to pump water, and while some have backup pumps that run on diesel fuel, Israel has allowed no fuel to flow into Gaza for four days, leaving it dependent on emergency supplies expected to last another three days.
E-Mail from Dov Stein Sanhedrin
Egeland, who as Norway's deputy foreign minister helped orchestrate secret 1992 talks between Israel and the Palestinians that led to the Oslo accords, lamented that both sides in the conflict appeared intent on perpetuating an endless cycle of violence.
Eye for an Eye
"They are locked in a situation where they do their utmost to cut the bridges between them and create hatred that bodes ill for the future," he said. "Why do they do things that are so counter to their own interests?"
Red Cross looks to send medical supplies to Gaza
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), concerned about escalating Middle East violence, called on Friday for Israel to allow urgent medical supplies into Gaza.

Dorothea Krimitsas, ICRC spokeswoman, said Israel was obliged under international law - including the Geneva Conventions - to ensure that humanitarian supplies reach Palestinian civilians.
Israel Air Force fighter jets pounded Gaza on Friday, setting ablaze the Interior Ministry office of the Hamas-led Palestinian government in a widening military effort to secure the release of a soldier captured last Sunday.

"We are negotiating with Israel to allow in humanitarian aid. These are essential medicines and medical supplies for the Palestinian Red Crescent," Krimitsas told Reuters.
"We are concerned at the humanitarian consequences of the escalation of violence and closure of crossing points to Gaza, especially the Karni crossing," she added.
The ICRC is also anxious to deliver food packages and household items for Palestinian families, some of whom have had their homes destroyed, according to Krimitsas.
"Under international law, Israel has the obligation to allow humanitarian supplies into Gaza. It also has the duty to ensure that the vital supplies for the population, including food and medicine, are adequate," she said.
Israeli strikes have knocked out bridges, water systems and a major power transformer in the densely populated Gaza Strip, home to 1.4 million Palestinians.
Hospitals, hard-hit by the loss of electricity, have to use generators for power, consuming precious fuel, Krimitsas said.
"We are worried about the fuel stocks. Palestinian authorities have estimated that they have enough for about 7 to 10 days," she added.

Israeli missiles pound Gaza
into new Dark Age in ‘collective punishment’
By Donald Macintyre29 June 2006
As a textbook example of hi-tech precision bombardment it could hardly be improved. Smoke was still rising yesterday from the scorched wreckage of the six transformers at Gaza’s only power station, each destroyed by a single missile fired by an Israeli warplane some 10 hours earlier.
Had they hit the huge cylindrical diesel tank 100 metres away they would have set the whole power station alight. But the strike was clinically effective, cutting all the electricity to 700,000 Gaza consumers, threatening water supplies and depriving its public of light, cooking, broadcast news, and – a crucial issue in scorching summer temperatures – fans.
“I’m so surprised that they did this,” said Dr Derar Abu Sisi, the operations manager at the Al Nusirat power station. “We have been right through the worst of the intifada but this didn’t happen.” It would, Dr Abu Sisi said, take a “minimum of three to six months” to restore supplies at a cost between $5m (£2.8m) and $7m. “The Geneva Convention says it is not allowed to attack infrastructure for the civilian people,” he added. “You might expect that economic infrastructure could be a target in the last stages of a war. But this is not like that.”
The damage to Gaza’s power supply was condemned as “unacceptable and barbaric collective punishment of civilians, including women, children and old people” by the office of Mahmoud Abbas, which complained it was intensifying what it says are the difficulties he already faces in trying to secure the safe release of Gilad Shalit, the 19-year-old Israeli army corporal abducted by militants – including members of Hamas’s military wing – on Sunday.
The crisis escalated yesterday as Hamas called for the prisoner swap Israel has so far refused to entertain; another faction responsible for Cpl Shalit’s abduction, the Popular Resistance Committees, threatened to kill Eliahu Asheri, 18, a settler it says it is holding, if Israel does not end its military campaign in Gaza, and a third, the al-Aqsa Martyrs, claimed to have seized a 62-year-old man from the central Israeli city of Rishon Lezion.
In retaliation, Israeli soldiers last night arrested the Labour Minister, Mohammed Barghouthi, a member of the Hamas-led Palestinian government, in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian security officials said.
The army fired a barrage of artillery rounds into northern Gaza throughout the night, including at the Islamic University in Gaza City, as it prepared to tell local residents to leave their homes before moving in force into Beit Hanoun to attack Qassam rocket launching units.
Roads in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis were also targeted. The Israeli army said they were to prevent the kidnapped soldier being moved and to cut off access to militants launching rockets at Israel.
Ehud Olmert, the Israeli Prime Minister, said that the army would not hesitate to carry out “extreme action” in the coming days to bring the abducted soldier back to his family.
The aerial attack on the power station was one of four conducted early yesterday. The other three were on bridges in central Gaza, which the Israel Defence Forces said were intended to hamper attempts by Cpl Shalit’s captors to move him from the south to the north.
Yesterday, however, a side road alongside the most easterly of these, which fords the currently dried-up river running through the Wadi Gaza on the main north-south Salahadin road, was busy with traffic which had turned off to avoid the wrecked bridge and continue its journey unimpeded towards Gaza City from the south.
Another target was an old railway bridge 200 metres to the west, which the army says can be used by vehicles but which carried a now-broken water pipeline to two refugee camps.
Zakri al-Ouh, 62, a construction worker who lives near by and helped to build the two-lane road bridge under Egyptian supervision in 1965 and 1966, said: “When it rains then it will be impossible to use the road, but at the moment I can’t see how this can help the soldier.” He added: “At first I was in favour of handing back the soldier as quickly as possible. We have to consider the power of Israel against our own weakness. “But now they have done this I think there should be an exchange of prisoners before he is handed back.” The southernmost town of Rafah – to which roads were notably less crowded than usual yesterday – still has power because it takes its electricity from Israel. But Rafah, which had most to gain from Israel’s withdrawal last August because it had been the most ravaged in all of the occupied territories during four years of the intifada, now fears a return of conflict.
Yesterday morning, with Israeli troops and tanks now occupying the disused airport two kilometres from the town centre, Maher Abu Ermana 21, was doing a brisk trade in sacks of flour, oil, sugar and beans provided by aid agencies, sold to him by impoverished refugee recipients trying to make a few extra shekels, and invariably labelled “not for resale”.
Such is Gaza’s dysfunctional economic cycle that Mr Abu Ermana is now selling his wares to customers stocking up in fear of war shortages. Up until two days ago, after Cpl Gilad Shalit was abducted, he said: “I was selling two sacks a day. Now I am selling 20 to 40.”
“We are all worried,” said Zakia Mahmoud, 40, who has 10 children. “I hope it will not return to what it was before. If it does, we will lose half of our sons.”
The most audible element of the “message” Israel says it is delivering to Gaza in the hope of securing the safe release of Cpl Shalit – in the event of which it says it will pull back its forces from the Strip – are the sonic booms produced by warplanes deliberately flying faster than the speed of sound over Gaza.
Yesterday’s booms – which produce the shattering sound of a heavy explosion in the immediate vicinity – started at 5am and were the first for several months, after two human rights groups filed a High Court petition saying that they constituted an illegal “collective punishment”.
But the most powerful impact of Israel’s – so far – “specific and limited” military campaign is likely to be power cuts. Gaza City’s main Shifa hospital said its generator was working 24 hours a day but because of fuel shortages could keep going for only two weeks. Mark Regev, the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, insisted the attacks on power stations and bridges were justified by the need to bring out Cpl Shalit alive.
The Israeli human rights agency Btselem warned that the power cuts would jeopardise water supplies and health care. It stressed that Israel had the right to enact “all legal measures” to secure the release of Cpl Shalit but not those which conflict with international humanitarian law prohibitions against “objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population”.
Warplanes ‘buzz’ Syrian President
Israeli warplane s“buzzed” the summer residence of Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian President, yesterday to pressure him to secure the release of the abducted Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
Military officials said the jets flew over President Assad’s palace near the coastal port city of Latkia. Television reports said the Syrian President had been at home during the predawn flights. Mr Assad was apparently targeted because Israel believes there are close links between Syria and Hamas. Khaled Mashaal, the exiled Hamas leader believed by many Palestinians, as well as Israel, as having sanctioned the abduction of Cpl Shalit on Sunday last week, is based in Damascus. Officials said the aircraft flying low had made a “noise” on the ground but did not say whether they created sonic booms of the sort generated in Gaza.
State-run Syrian television said two Israeli aircraft had flown over the country’s coast in an “aggressive act and a provocation”. It claimed “national air defences opened fire in the direction of the planes, and they dispersed”.

BEIJI, Iraq - Five U.S. soldiers are being investigated for allegedly raping a young woman, then killing her and three relatives, an American military official said Friday, describing the latest allegations of abuse of Iraqi civilians.
The soldiers also allegedly burned the body of the woman they are accused of assaulting in the March incident, the official told The Associated Press on
There is nothing hidden which is not REVEALED
The U.S. command issued a sparse statement, saying Maj. Gen. James D. Thurman, commander of coalition troops in Baghdad, had ordered a criminal investigation into the alleged killing of a family of four in Mahmoudiyah, south of Baghdad. The statement had no other details.
The case represents the latest allegations against U.S. soldiers stemming from the deaths of Iraqis. At least 14 U.S. troops have been convicted.
The United States also is investigating allegations that two dozen unarmed Iraqi civilians were killed by U.S. Marines in the western town of Haditha on Nov. 19 in a revenge attack after one of their own died in a roadside bombing.
"The entire investigation will encompass everything that could have happened that evening. We're not releasing any specifics of an ongoing investigation," military spokesman Maj. Todd Breasseale said of the Mahmoudiyah allegations.
"There is no indication what led soldiers to this home. The investigation just cracked open. We're just beginning to dig into the details."
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said he had no additional details on the incident but added that the military routinely investigates all allegations of misconduct.
However, a U.S. official close to the investigation said at least one of the soldiers, all assigned to the 502nd Infantry Regiment, has admitted his role and been arrested. Two soldiers from the same regiment were slain this month when they were kidnapped at a checkpoint near Youssifiyah.
See how easily
the counter punch was thrown in, the eye for an eye doctrine
The official told the AP the accused soldiers were from the same platoon as the two slain soldiers. The military has said one and possibly both of the slain soldiers were tortured and beheaded.
The official said the mutilation of the slain soldiers stirred feelings of guilt and led at least one of them to reveal the rape-slaying on June 22.
According to a senior Army official, the alleged incident was first revealed by a soldier during a routine counseling-type session. The official, who requested anonymity because the investigation is ongoing, said that soldier did not witness the incident but heard about it.
A second soldier, who also was not involved, said he overhead soldiers conspiring to commit the crimes, and then later saw bloodstains on their clothes, the official said.
He also said the four people killed included three adults and a child, and one of the adults was the woman who allegedly was raped.
One of the accused soldiers already has been discharged and is believed to be in the United States, several U.S. officials said on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. The others have had their weapons taken away and are confined to Forward Operating Base Mahmoudiyah.
Senior officers were aware of the family's death but believed it was due to sectarian violence, common in the religiously mixed town, a U.S. official said.
The killings appeared to have been a "crime of opportunity," the official said. The soldiers had not been attacked by insurgents but had noticed the woman on previous patrols.

Human rights in W. Bank put on permanent agenda of UN council
By News Agencies
GENEVA - Arab and Muslim states on Friday put the occupied Palestinian territories on the permanent agenda of the United Nations Human Rights Council, overcoming Israeli and Western objections to singling out alleged abuses by Israel.
It will help Sanhedrin's
False Noahide Peace, Rule
A resolution to re-examine the issue at future sessions, brought by the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) easily won passage at the 47-member forum.
A second OIC resolution, expressing deep concern at an "increasing trend of defamation of religions" and incitement to religious hatred, was also adopted along similar voting lines.
There you have it
The two votes, on the final day of the
Rights Council's inaugural two-week session, were seen as divisive.
Many states and rights activists had hoped all decisions would be taken by consensus to avoid the acrimony that marked the council's predecessor body, the UN Commission on Human Rights, which also debated Palestinian issues at each session.
The vote to examine the situation in the Palestinian territories at future sessions passed with 29 countries in favor, 12 against, five abstentions and one delegation absent.
The resolution also called for existing UN human rights investigators, known as special rapporteurs, to report on the situation in the territories at the next session in September.
Regional powers including Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria were among the resolution's sponsors.
Western countries, including Britain, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan, voted against the text. The United States did not stand for election and only had observer status.
Itzkhak Levanon, Israel's ambassador, said in a speech before the vote that the OIC text was "imbalanced and intentionally one-sided".
"If this Council seeks to follow the discredited footsteps of the Commission, to encourage contention and selectivity rather than tolerance and objectivity, to lend itself to become a mere instrument of Israel bashing, politicized and subverted to propaganda, then it is clearly walking in that trail," he said.
UN Security Council schedules emergency debate on Gaza crisis
The UN Security Council scheduled an emergency debate Friday on the Israeli offensive in Gaza, and the Palestinian delegation said it would press for adoption of a resolution condemning Israel's aggression and demanding a halt to all military operations.
Riyad Mansour, Palestinian observer to the UN, said the resolution would also demand the release of Palestinian Cabinet ministers and Hamas officials arrested by Israel on Thursday following the abduction of an Israeli soldier, which sparked the current crisis.
The council agreed to the open meeting after receiving a request from Algeria, the current head of the Arab Group at the UN. It was presented by Qatar, the only Arab member of the council.
Mansour accused Israel of trying to reoccupy parts of the Gaza Strip, bombarding it with artillery from the sea, dropping bombs from fighter jets, and preparing for additional ground attacks.
"The Strip is completely besieged. Nobody is in, nobody is out," Mansour said. "It is a huge crime against humanity endangering 1.3 million Palestinians."
He expressed hope that "the council would rise up to this occasion and adopt an appropriate resolution that does not allow aggression to take place."
But U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said he expected only a debate on the
five-day-old crisis, noting that a resolution has not been circulated to
John Bolton the
Hassidic Chabad Lubavitcher
"We don't think a resolution would be advisable," he said.
The unprecedented warning was delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in a letter as Israel debated a deal offered by Hamas to free Corporal Gilad Shalit.
It came as Israeli military officials readied a second invasion force for a huge offensive into Gaza.
Hamas's Gaza-based political leaders, including Mr Haniyeh, had already gone into hiding.
But last night's direct threat to kill Mr Haniyeh, a democratically elected head of state, sharply raised the stakes.
The bid to free Corporal Shalit was brokered by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who last night warned Hamas it faced severe consequences if it did not curb its "extreme stance" and described the growing conflict as a lightning rod for Palestinian vengeance.
Jerusalem has made no official comment, but Egyptian state media said Israel had found the offer unacceptable. Israel has not spelt out the terms demanded by Hamas, but earlier this week it refused to buy into talk of a prisoner swap.
Thousands of Hamas supporters protested in Gaza City late on Thursday over the arrest by Israeli forces of up to 32 Hamas MPs on the West Bank that day.
War Crimes against Humanity
http://english.wafa.ps/body.asp?id=6713ICJ Concerned by Infrastructure Destruction, Collective Punishments Carried out by Israel in Gaza Strip
GENEVA, June 30, 2006 (WAFA) - The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said it is extremely concerned by the destruction of infrastructure and collective punishments carried out by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
"Such acts can amount to war crimes for which individuals can be held criminally responsible," said a press release by the ICJ.
It called on both parties to respect basic principles of international humanitarian law and reminds all States Parties to the Geneva Conventions of their legal obligation to ensure respect for the Conventions.
"The ICJ is extremely concerned by these latest developments that constitute a clear breach of international humanitarian law that applies to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", said Nicholas Howen, Secretary-General of the ICJ.
It added, as an occupying power exercising effective control over the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, Israel is legally bound to respect the IV Geneva Convention on the Protection of Civilians in Time of War.
Article 33 of the IV Geneva Convention states: "No person may be punished for an offence he or she has not personally committed. Collective punishments and likewise all measures of intimidation or of terrorism are prohibited.".
The announcement by Israel that it will begin targeting populated areas is totally unacceptable and a blatant violation of a fundamental principle of the law of war that prohibits the excessive and disproportionate use of force against civilians, said Mr Nicholas Howen.
Moreover, statements by National Infrastructure Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer alluding to the possibility that Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh was not exempt from arrest or harm are extremely worrying and contrary to basic principles of the rule of law.
The ICJ called on the Israeli authorities to abide by international humanitarian law, to ensure the protection and safety of the Palestinian civilian population and to stop military actions that constitute collective punishments and wanton destruction of infrastructure and basic objects indispensable for the survival of the civilian population.
It recalled that under international law, the extensive destruction of property that is not justified by military necessity and carried unlawfully and wantonly constitutes a war crime.

http://english.wafa.ps/body.asp?id=6711HRW: Israel's Destruction of Gaza's only Electrical Plant Punishes Civilian Population
BEIRUT, June 30, 2006 (WAFA) - Israel's destruction of Gaza's only electrical plant needlessly punishes the civilian population and has created the potential for a serious humanitarian crisis, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said.
HRW said also Israel must minimise the harm to Gaza's civilian population during any military operation "and that includes not destroying vital power plants."
Human Rights Watch also expressed concern about the intentional and frequent use of sonic booms by Israeli military aircraft over Gaza, which has caused great fear among the civilian population, particularly among children.
Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits "measures of intimidation" against the civilian population. As there appears to be no military justification for the use of the sonic booms, other than the prohibited practice of intimidation, Human Rights Watch urged Israel to immediately halt the practice.
The laws of war prohibit attacks on "objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population." Israel's attack on Gaza's only power plant is in violation of its obligation to safeguard such objects from attack.
HRW added "Even though Israel unilaterally withdrew its troops and colonies from Gaza in 2005, it continues to have obligations as an occupying power in Gaza because of its almost complete control over Gaza's borders, sea and air space, tax revenue, utilities, and the internal economy of Gaza."
At a minimum, HRW says, Israel continues to be responsible for the basic welfare of the Palestinian population in Gaza, in particular the health, educational, and humanitarian needs of the population to the extent these are affected by the restrictions imposed on Gaza by Israel.
Human Rights Watch urged Israel to take all possible precautions to limit the impact of its military campaign in Gaza on the civilian population. In particular, the laws of war require Israel to ensure that the impact of its military actions on the civilian population is not disproportionate to the military objectives it seeks to achieve, and that it does not target objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population.

As Israeli Offensive Rises, Citizen Killed in Nablus, another in Rafah
NABLUS, June 30, 2006 (WAFA) - Israeli soldiers shot dead a citizen in a cemetery in the West Bank city of Nablus. Thirty others were wounded in the attack, security sources said.
Local witnesses said that Israeli troops surrounded the cemetery in the city of Nablus, trapping four members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades inside. One of was shot dead in an exchange of fire while two others were arrested.
The use of excessive force against the members of al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, led to the injury of thirty civilians.
Meanwhile, an Israeli missile early Friday killed an Islamic Jihad member and injured another in southern Gaza Strip, security and medical sources said.
Elsewhere, Israeli jetfighters struck more than a dozen times in Gaza early Friday, hitting the Palestinian Interior Ministry and a Fatah office in Gaza city, as well as a Hamas training camp in eastern Gaza.
Three citizens were also wounded in an Israeli strike on a car in Gaza's al-Shuja'iya neighbourhood. Medical sources said the their injuries are said to be critical.
However, Israel forces have intensified its offensive on Friday, carrying out several air strikes in the Gaza Strip overnight.
The Israeli missiles targeted offices belonging to Hamas and the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, roads, and open fields, security officials on both sides said.

O Little town of Bethlehem
Israeli forces carry out sweeping arrests of Palestinian officials
Israeli forces raid three Bethlehem charitable institutions “because they are affiliated with the Hamas party”
(Bethlehem) Najib Farag 30 June 06
Official Palestinian sources and eyewitnesses are reporting on a major Israeli raid early Friday morning on several institutions and humanitarian services charities. Israeli forces invaded the Bethlehem area early this morning, smashing windows, confiscating computers, files, and crucial materials from several humanitarian organizations.
Israeli forces incurred into Bethlehem City at approximately 3:00 am, with ten military patrols and army vehicles, and raided a kindergarten, bombing its doors open. They searched the contents in the dark of night, and confiscated three computers.
They also raided the Charitable Medical Center
east of Bethlehem where the on-duty doctor, Haitham Abu Hahmameed and the night
watchman were working.
Israeli soldiers crucified physician Dr. Abu Mahameed on the wall as they forced the guard to take them through all rooms which provide 24-hour emergency medical services to area Palestinians. Within minutes the search was over and Israeli soldiers took three computers and destroyed the center’s contents.
Director of the Assembly Building, which was also destroyed, David Amor, said Friday, “The destruction was considerable and the Assembly will not be able return to work until reconstruction takes places. The mess needs two weeks. This is part of the serial criminal activities of the Israeli forces, their assaults on Palestinian property without excuse, scruples or morals. This is an association providing humanitarian services to citizens and not affiliated to any Palestinian organization.”
As the Israeli soldiers proceeded to storm the headquarters of the Zakat structures in the town and confiscate materials and documents, a number of soldiers ripped pages from the Quran before confiscating more computers from several organizations.
An Israeli military spokesperson claimed that
the three institutions are affiliated with the Hamas party, and therefore they
carried out the attacks.
Yesterday Israeli forces began arresting elected members of Palestinian government who are also members of the Hamas party and stripped the citizenship from Jerusalem residents in the Palestinian government affiliated with Hamas.

When I first heard about the Israeli soldier who was “kidnapped” by Palestinians and heard the appeal of Abu Mazen to the Palestinian factions, followed by many other Arab and foreign leaders, calling for his release, I thought that the soldier was kidnapped from a coffee shop in Tel Aviv. This feeling was emphasised when I heard the Israeli army spokesman talking to Aljazeera, calling upon the kidnappers to save his life and send him back to his family and parents. I finally realised this was not the case, when I read on the BBC that “the missing man was the gunner on a tank attacked in a pre-dawn raid by militants from a 300 metre tunnel under the Gaza border fence near the Kerem Shalom crossing.” Calling him a “man” and not a “soldier”, however, confused me a bit.
I learned that this soldier/man (not to upset the BBC) was kidnapped in a battle at a military checkpoint inside the green line. Since he is a gunner on a tank, I assume he has participated in shelling Gaza and is probably responsible for the deaths of some civilians, maybe even children and picnickers on the Gaza shoreline.
Israel immediately and as usual blamed the incident on the Palestinian Authority, including the President, although the incident involved the military and not civilians.
The Associated Press wrote: “Despite Abbas’ ongoing efforts to pressure his Hamas rivals into moderation, Olmert said he blamed the entire Palestinian leadership, including the president, responsible for the spiraling violence.
“It should be clear that we see the Palestinian Authority on all its levels, from the chairman on downward, as the responsible element for this operation and all that happens from it,” Olmert said, referring to Abbas.
Later I found out that the soldier, besides being an Israeli, is also a French citizen. The French government was alerted and announced that they will do their best to save the life of the soldier and bring him back to his beloved family and friends - A French citizen serving in illegally occupied territories violating the Fourth Geneva Convention, to which France is a signatory. I am not sure about the official position of the French government, but as far as I am aware, they usually encourage their citizens not to be in the West Bank or Gaza. So I really cannot understand how the French government can in this case endorse the presence in Gaza of a French citizen who is not there for a picnic, but deliberately violating international law.
I admit that I am a non-violent person. I disagree with all violent activities and don’t believe that any conflict can or should be solved by force and violence. Yet I also fully believe in International Law, which gives occupied people the right to resist their occupiers by all means. Gaza, just like the rest of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, is still under occupation and not liberated, or “contested” as Israel and some media try to say.
Back in 2004, well before the Israel’s unilateral disengagement from Gaza took place, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights’ Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Prof. John Dugard wrote in his official report to the Commission:
“Israel does not plan to relinquish its grasp on the Gaza Strip. It plans to retain ultimate control over Gaza by controlling its borders, territorial sea and airspace. Consequently, it will in law remain an Occupying Power still subject to obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention”.
In his latest briefing following his 9-17 June 2006 visit to the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Prof. Dugard wrote:
“Gaza is under
siege. Israel controls its airspace and has resumed sonic booms, which terrorize
and traumatize its people. The targeted killing of militants is on the increase.
Inevitably, as in the past, such killings have resulted in the killing and
wounding of innocent bystanders. Israel also controls Gaza's territorial sea and
fires missiles into the territory from ships at sea...Within Gaza, medical
services have been seriously affected by the prohibition on the funding of
medical equipment and medical supplies managed by the Hamas-led Palestinian
Authority. The non-payment of salaries to Palestinian Authority employees has
affected both hospitals and schools as employees cannot afford to travel to
work. Unemployment and poverty are on the increase. After a long period of
closure of the Karni commercial crossing, this crossing has been re-opened but
it still processes only a limited number of trucks with the result that Gaza is
still short of basic foodstuffs and is unable to export its produce”.
To make matters worse, when a military spokesman was asked by Aljazeera whether Israel will stop its planned invasion of Gaza should the soldier be released, he said that these were two different stories. In other words Gaza will be invaded one way or the other. According to Israeli daily, Yediot Ahronot, the invasion of Gaza was planned much earlier than the kidnapping of the soldier. This means not only will child prisoners not be released in exchange for the soldier’s life, but more children will most likely be killed in the coming invasion.
Thus, the Palestinian
president and the other regional and international leaders are in effect asking
for the release of the soldier but at the same time for Gazans to prepare
themselves for a widespread Israeli invasion. The message is that Palestinians
should not resist - they should just wait for the Israelis in their homes,
schoolyards and on the streets, ready to die. Palestinians should not defend
themselves or defend their children; they simply need to wait to be killed
without resistance because any resistance, even if it comes from a victim, is an
act of terror.
Meanwhile, Associated Press and Reuters wrote:
“… the soldier’s family broke its silence on Monday to plead with his captors to treat him humanely and to remember he has a loving family who misses him dearly. Noam Shalit, in an interview with Associated Press Television, described his son as a quiet, helpful boy who followed his older brother into the military’s armored corps. ‘The only thing we have left right now is hope, nothing more,’ he said.”
Reading these heartbreaking lines pushed me to compare this with what a Palestinian mother had said on Aljazeera, following a recent shelling by Israel, when she stated that the very concept of hope has been erased from her consciousness.
What the Shalit family is feeling now is exactly how most Palestinian families are feeling or have felt at one time. All Israelis need to know that. They need to know that Palestinians are humans just like them. Palestinians mourn when their children are killed and they feel desperate when their children are imprisoned. This vicious cycle of violence needs to be stopped. Israel should end its occupation for once and for ever and not leave any outstanding issues as it usual does. They should fully withdraw from Gaza and the West bank including East Jerusalem and give the Palestinians their political and economic rights. Israelis need to give Palestinians the chance to live next to them in prosperity and peace – a just peace.
Kidnapping an Israeli soldier will not bring us one inch closer to peace, yet neither will Israeli revenge attacks, pre-emptive attacks or collective punishment, like cutting food supplies, electricity or water. The only Israeli logical response which would satisfy the Shalit family and other bereaved Israeli and Palestinian families would be to end the occupation. The time is now. The time has always been now – Israel, when will you learn?Last Updated ( Thursday, 29 June 2006
Hospitals in Gaza suffer
because of lack of electricity
Jun 30, 2006, 18:52
Nablus – The PA minister of health Dr. Basem
Naeem said in a statement on Thursday that the lives of hundreds of Palestinian
patients are at risk because of the electricity blackout in Gaza.
The IOF airforce destroyed the main power station in Gaza City plunging three quarters of the city into darkness.
Hospitals have emergency generators but even those are running out of fuel putting at risk the lives of hundreds of Palestinian patients, especially those in intensive care.
If electricity supply is not restored to hospitals very quickly many deaths are expected.
The statement appealed to the international community to respond quickly to avert a human catastrophe if hospitals are not supplied with electricity or fuel to run their own emergency generators.
4 Palestinians wounded in
Israeli airstrikes and tank shelling of southern Gaza
Jun 30, 2006, 18:00
Khan Younis – Four Palestinians were wounded
Friday morning in a combination of Israeli aerial and ground bombardment of Khan
Younis and Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
Eyewitnesses reported that Israeli tanks fired shells at the Farahin neighborhood east of the town of Abasan to the south of Khan Younis wounding at least one Palestinian.
The local residents reported that the tanks stationed in the area barred Palestinian ambulances from reaching the wounded Palestinian.
Local residents also reported that Israeli navy boats also fired at Palestinian fishermen and beachgoers at the Khan Younis beach causing them to flee for their lives.
In Rafah three Palestinians were wounded in an Israeli airstrike that targeted al-Salam neighborhood.
Israeli aircraft also fired a rocket at a house behind the Martyrs Cemetery setting it on fire, according to local sources.
