I first read this affecting novel twenty years ago and large parts of it have stayed with me every since. It's long out of print, but I hunted until I found a copy -- and I know now, again, why I remembered it so well. Lynn is known mostly for her high-concept fantasy, but this one is "what if" science fiction of the best sort. It's sometime in the unknown future and humans have colonized dozens of worlds, aided by the discovery of the "Hype" -- a parallel hyperspace route between stars, navigated by starcaptains, latter-day bravos with their own traditions and culture. The four worlds of the Sardonyx Sector got together a few generations ago to set up a prison world called Chabad, not unlike Britain shipping off its felons to Australia. But now Chabad is a colony world, too, with its own exports, and nearly everything is powered by the slave labor of the convicts. Lynn is careful to make her version of slavery as humane as possible: After their sentence is up, slaves are freed, their property is returned to them, and they can either leave Chabad or become free citizens. They're depersonalized, but not tortured. If they have useful skills, and if their owners are sensitive people, they may experience something like contentment. But they aren't free. And many, perhaps most, slaves are kept dosed on a tranquilizing euphoric drug called dorazine to keep them controllable. Of the Four Families that run Chabad, the slave system is in the care of Family Yago, and especially of Domna Rhani Yago, head of the family, and her brother, Zed, who is both a Senior Medic and Commander of the "Net," the toroidal starship that collects the prisoners from the other worlds of the sector and brings them to the slave auction on Chabad. Add an interplanetary antidrug police force trying to keep dorazine from being brought to Chabad, and all the elements are present for a complex, involving plot. But the real focus is on the personalities of Rhani, a reasonable, fair-minded woman who has been blinded by her upbringing and position, and of Zed, a sexual psychopath and thoroughgoing, self-aware sadist. And, finally, of Dana Ikoro, young starcaptain trying to bring off his first successful dorazine smuggling run, who gets caught and falls afoul of Zed before becoming Rhani Yago's slave-pilot -- and confidant, and lover. And there are more than a dozen other carefully-drawn characters in the supporting cast, all of which makes this a thoroughly fascinating book. I've read other reviews by readers -- probably much younger ones -- that have been knee-jerk dismissive of this novel because it seems to approve of slavery, . . . which it doesn't. Lynn seeks only to examine the possible effects of its use, which she does very effectively. Those other reviewers seem to adhere to absolutist standards of ethics and morality and seem not to understand that history (even when it's future history) is what happens, not what *should* happen. Both attitudes are foolish. But then, most long-time science fiction readers learn early to become tolerant ethical relativists.

Revelation 20:4-this speaks of the souls beheaded for the witness of Jesus and the Word of God, who will not participate in this End Time NWO agenda and it's spiritual darkness. To the Christians, Halachah was (and still is) anathema. The 'letter' of the law as pitted against its 'spirit', with Paul arguing that in fact the law was the very source of sin. Instead of following Halachah, one need only believe, feel, and be reborn of the spirit -- to follow not the discipline of a burdensome law, but the illuminations of one's inner heart. Criticism

Critics of the Noahide laws contend that insisting upon a basic set of moral laws is quite contrary to religious pluralism. This holds true especially in light of the fact that the adoption of the Noahide Laws as an enforceable legal code would (according to most authorities) criminalize activities common to religions other than Judaism (such as  the worship of Jesus and the use of crucifixes, religious pictures, the Eucharist at the Mass etc).

While most Christians would consider the Ten Commandments to be binding on them and would see some of the Noahide laws as essentially a subset of these (though the requirement to set up courts, and the dietary regulation, are not explicit in the commandments), many Jewish thinkers consider Noahide Laws as not quite as simple as they seem but as "general categories of commandments, each containing many components and details," the execution of which is left to Jewish rabbis. This, in addition to the teaching of the Jewish law that punishment for violating one of the seven Noahide Laws includes death by decapitation (Talmud, tractate Sanhedrin 57a), is a factor in the opposition of the notion of a Noahide legal system, by many Christians.

Who Was Jesus?

The Bible gave a warning about a dangerous, false prophet who would arise to test our faith in G-d. In Deuteronomy 13, G-d describes this false prophet as a member of the Jewish people (v. 2, 7) who would tell true prophecies and would have the power of miracles. G-d Himself would give this false prophet the power to perform miracles and reveal prophecy, but the false prophet would try to seduce the people away from G-d's Law and towards strange gods unknown to Judaism. The purpose would be to test whether we are truly committed to living under the Law, or whether we will be dazzled and fall for the temptation to join a false path to salvation (v. 3-6, 7-8, 11). In this Biblical passage, G-d repeatedly commands the Jews to kill this false prophet, lest the evil spread and destroy many souls.

Significance of the Great Sanhedrin in Israel

 

Last week it was announced that the Great Sanhedrin had been re-established in a ceremony at Tiberius (see http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=70349).

  

Rabbi Kook, first Chief Rabbi of Israel, had written that the steps leading up to the final redemption (of the Jewish people, and of the world) would follow the order of a special (and ancient) prayer called the Shemoneh Esrei (or Eighteen) --- referring to the Eighteen Benedictions listed therein. This prayer is spoken 3 times every day by observant Jews worldwide.

The 10th Benediction is called the “Ingathering of the Exiles” which had begun with secular Zionists in the late 1800’s (by Theodore Hertzl and some Christian Zionists encouraging him) and which led to the immigration of hundreds of Jews to what was then Southern Syria (Ottoman Empire) in preparation for the formation of the State of Israel.

This benediction talks about G-d blessing all the righteous, not only those among the House of Israel, but also among the Nations of the world. Part of it reads “give goodly reward to all who sincerely believe in Your Name.” One of our hopes from the Great Sanhedrin is that they will re-institute someday the ancient laws of the Geyr Toshav (resident alien) so that those Gentiles loyal to the Nation of Israel (and to the Torah for non-Jews, which are the 7 Noahide Laws) will be able to immigrate to Israel as “citizens” of this country. There is a massive B’nai Noah movement growing all around the world, (see as one example http://www.ephraimreturns.com), and many of them want to live in Israel as the restored geyrim toshavim and to be taught Torah by Jews who are fulfilling their G-d given task of being a “light to the nations”. This benediction speaks about “may You (G-d) speedily establish the throne of David within it.” There is a lot of work for the Sanhedrin in re-establishing all kinds of Torah laws (regarding the way we did things prior to our exile) about Jerusalem as THE city of the House of the L-rd (the Tabernacle/Temple), for the Lord’s feasts and festivals, and in preparation for the Davidic Reign.

Davidic Reign

This benediction speaks about the coming of our King Messiah. The Great Sanhedrin also has MUCH work to do to in preparing Israel to accept her Messiah, according the Jewish understanding and to the Torah that was given to Moses at Mt Sinai.

 

They will accept his who comes in his own name, But soon thereafter they will see him who they pierced coming in the Clouds with Great Glory on that Terrible Days of the Lord's wrath, and he will SEND his angels to reap the earth of tares and cast the tares into the winepress of Gods fury 

  

Temple Service

Along with preparing the city of Jerusalem as THE place to hold G-d’s House (and the Reign of our King Messiah) the Sanhedrin will be involved in getting the Priests and the Levites prepared for their restored role in the Temple Service. This might actually be the re-establishment of a restored Tabernacle of Moses, uncovered from its hiding place of approximately 2500 years ago. Former three-term Rep. Tom Coburn kept a U.S. Senate seat in GOP hands Tuesday, defeating Rep. Brad Carson despite allegations that the Republican, an obstetrician, once sterilized a woman without her permission.

Coburn replaces GOP Sen. Don Nickles, who is retiring after 24 years in office.

During the bruising campaign, Coburn vehemently denied the allegations by a woman who said he had sterilized her several years ago. Coburn branded Carson a liberal and aligned him with prominent Democrats, running ads that showed the Democrat as a puppet with John Kerry pulling the strings.

Carson, 37, an attorney and a Rhodes scholar, wore cowboy boots on the campaign trail and tooled around in a beat-up pickup truck. He said he would fight for Oklahomans, create jobs and never embarrass the state, drawing a distinction between himself and the outspoken Coburn.

During the campaign, Coburn, 56, said he favored the death penalty for doctors who perform abortions and mentioned hearing of "rampant lesbianism" in southeastern Oklahoma schools. Referring to state legislators, Coburn said the state had not prospered because of "crapheads in Oklahoma City."

Coburn represented a heavily Democratic congressional district in Oklahoma for six years before stepping down to honor his pledge to serve no more than three terms. The Muskogee doctor was succeeded by Carson in 2001.

Known as one of the most conservative members of Congress, Coburn helped lead a revolt against then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich by conservatives unhappy with concessions made to Democrats.

Coburn asked voters to send him back to Washington so he could fight big spenders and ensure "that our children and grandchildren have a future."

Carson had sought to become the first Democratic senator from Oklahoma in a decade -- since David Boren resigned after 16 years

That's the notion put forth by P.B. Desai, former director of the Tata Medical Center, who addressed the issue in a speech Friday titled "Conquest Over Mortality," according to the Indo-Asian News Service. "Science is moving at such a fast pace that scientists have proven that they can create headless mice through removal of genes in embryo that control development of the head," said Desai. "But the body would have the capacity to keep the organs functional for use as transplants."

Desai floated the idea at a meeting of the Chicago-based International College of Surgeons in New Delhi.

Desai anticipates restrictions on the creation of a headless human being who has the capacity to keep organs functioning but no thinking mind.

With several supreme court justices likely to retire, the victory also leaves anti-abortion campaigners more hopeful than ever that the complexion of the court could be shifted to eradicate the current tenuous majority in support of "Roe versus Wade", which reaffirms abortion as a constitutionally protected right.

"If Bush deliberately or inadvertently appoints enough judges to overturn Roe v Wade, the worst-case scenario is that it's the beginning of the end of the Republican party," said Jennifer Blei Stockman, co-chair of the Republican Majority for Choice. "It wouldn't be long before the outrage would spill into the voting booth, and it would only be a matter of time before the Democratic party ascends to power that will last for a long time."
 
In pandering to evangelical conservatives, Ms Stockman said, Republican strategists had "been feeding a monster who now has the party by its tail". At least 75% of Bush voters do not consider themselves evangelicals, she said. "The keynote speakers at the Republican convention were all 'pro-choice' moderates, from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Rudy Giuliani to [New York governor] George Pataki. Was that just a masquerade or was something of substance communicated?"
 
Conservative Republicans argue that talk of an imminent reversal of Roe v Wade is fearmongering, though they are far from reticent themselves in using lurid and shocking campaign messages.
 
"On the immediate front, let's ban partial-birth abortion," said Ms Earll, referring to the late-termination practice to which Mr Bush has declared himself opposed. "Right now, we have a supreme court that says it's a constitutional right to stab a nearly born infant in the back of the head and suck its brains out."
 
American views on abortion, however, may be less sharply divided than the vocal campaigners for each side make out, said Corwin Smidt, a professor of Christianity and politics at Calvin College in Michigan. "The percentage of Americans who want total free choice has been going down, but there has been no real increase in the percentage of people who want to eliminate all abortion," he said.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Gearing up for a full-scale offensive, U.S. warplanes overnight attacked targets in the insurgent stronghold of Falluja, west of Baghdad.

If you imagine the rest of us have a problem living with George Bush for another four years, spare a thought for the 55 million Americans who voted against him. John Kerry is fated to be stuck with the label of a loser and is already being blamed for his lack of charisma, his absence of passion and his electoral misjudgment of being born on the eastern seaboard rather than the deep south. Yet in fairness to Kerry, more Americans backed him than supported Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter, and some of them queued for two hours in their determination to vote for him. There may be more conservatives in America than ever before, but there are also more Democrats.

Unfortunately this does not add up to a case for a recount. The US does not run a proportional system and the winner takes all. In George Bush's case, he not only took the White House, but he also took a clean sweep of the Senate and the House of Representatives, and he will now have the opportunity to take a majority of the supreme court.

The first sign as to whether the Bush second term will be more flexible will be what now happens to the neoconservatives. What makes this web of reactionary ideologues a menace to the world is that they believe complex, historic problems have simple, instant, military solutions. And it is an article of faith with them that America must acquire full-spectrum dominance of military capabilities in order that it can impose such solutions unilaterally. They are the product of an era in which America has emerged as the sole hyperpower, and they regard allies not as proof of diplomatic strength but as evidence of military weakness.

Americans Flock to Canada's Immigration Web Site

OTTAWA (Reuters) - The number of U.S. citizens visiting Canada's main immigration Web site has shot up six-fold as Americans flirt with the idea of abandoning their homeland after President Bush's election win this week.

"When we looked at the first day after the election, Nov. 3, our Web site hit a new high, almost double the previous record high," immigration ministry spokeswoman Maria Iadinardi said on Friday.

On an average day some 20,000 people in the United States log onto the Web site, www.cic.gc.ca -- a figure which rocketed to 115,016 on Wednesday. The number of U.S. visits settled down to 65,803 on Thursday, still well above the norm.

Bush's victory sparked speculation that disconsolate Democrats and others might decide to start a new life in Canada, a land that tilts more to the left than the United States.

Would-be immigrants to Canada can apply to become permanent resident, a process that often takes a year. The other main way to move north on a long-term basis is to find a job, which requires a work permit.

Asked whether an applicant would be looked upon more sympathetically if they claimed to be a sad Democrat seeking to escape four more years of Bush, Iadinardi replied: "There would be no weight given to statements of feelings."

Canada is one of the few major nations with an large-scale immigration policy. Ottawa is seeking to attract between 220,000 and 240,000 newcomers next year.

"Let's face it, we have a population of a little over 32 million and we definitely need permanent residents to come to Canada," said Iadinardi. "If we could meet (the 2005) target and go above it, the more the merrier."

"There is no unusual activity occurring at our visa missions (in the United States). Having someone who intends to come to Canada is not the same as someone actually putting in an application," said Iadinardi.

The waiting time to become a citizen is shorter for people married to Canadians, which prompted the birth of a satirical Web site called www.marryanamerican.ca.

The idea of increased immigration by unhappy Americans is triggering some amusement in Canada. Commentator Thane Burnett of the Ottawa Sun newspaper wrote a tongue-in-cheek guide to would-be new citizens on Friday.

"As Canadians, you'll have to learn to embrace and use all the products and culture of Americans, while bad-mouthing their way of life," he said.

Palestinian sources reported on Friday morning that two children, aged 8 and 10, were killed by an Israeli tank shell fired at their house in the Al-Qarara area, east of the Khan Yunis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip.
 
The Israeli army said the children were killed when explosive devices planted in the area by Palestinians went off.

(When the polls closed in Chicago, American Free Press was at the Cook County clerk's office to see how the secretive private company that operates the voting machines in America's third largest city actually controls the counting of the votes.)
 
CHICAGO - The morning after Election Day, the Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards promised the nation that the Democrats would "make sure that every vote counts, and that every vote is counted."
 
Later in the day, as the Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. John Kerry, conceded defeat to George W. Bush, his 9th cousin and fellow "Bonesman from Yale's elite secret society, The Order of the Skull & Bones, he said: "In America, it is vital that every vote count.
 
Kerry and Edwards, however, conceded defeat before some 170,000 to 250,000 provisional ballots from the state of Ohio, which could have changed the outcome of the election, had been counted.
 
As the public has been led to believe, the final tally came down to a near 50-50 split and it was the "swing state of Ohio that made the difference.
 
But how were the votes actually counted across the nation on November 2?
 
VOTING IN CHICAGO
 
On Election Day, voters in Cook County (Ill.) were among the 60 million Americans who voted with machines made by Election Systems & Software, a secretive and private company based in Omaha.
 
ES&S, as its known, calls itself "the world's largest and most experienced provider of total election management solutions. According to the company's own figures, 42 percent of all registered voters in the United States voted on ES&S equipment on Election Day.
 
ES&S sells its "end-to-end election management suite of solutions to replace traditional voting methods -- and election officials -- with what it calls "one-stop-shop full service election coordination from start to finish.
 
What this means on Election Day is that ES&S, a private company, manages everything about the voting, from voter registration, the printing of ballots, the programming of the voting machines, the counting and tabulation of the votes, and the final reporting of the results for 60 million Americans in 47 states.
 
Four years after first revealing the flaws inherent in the insecure ES&S electronic voting machines used in Cook County, American Free Press went to the county clerk's office to observe how ES&S controls the counting of the votes for America's third largest city, Chicago, and the suburban area around it.
 
Scott Burnham, spokesman for the county clerk, had informed me that the vote count is open to the public and that press credentials would not be required. Shortly after arriving, I ran into Burnham and David Orr, the county clerk, in the hallway.
 
Although I had arrived just shortly before the polls closed at 7 p.m., I was the only member of the public or the press around except for a couple Associated Press (AP) reporters in the far corner of the room. They were busy setting up their laptop to the ES&S computer in the backroom, which provided them with "direct feed of the results.
 
I was surprised to see so few people attending such an important event. In France, scores of citizens watch the vote count in each polling station.
 
While the results were coming in, the AP "reporter read a novel while her laptop did the communicating.
 
When I went to talk to the AP reporter, Burnham quickly appeared and told me to leave. "You should talk to AP, he said.
 
"She is AP, I replied.
 
"She just works for AP, he said.
 
Clearly the subject of AP having direct data feed from the mainframe computer was something Burnham did not want me to discuss.
 
Dane Placko, a local reporter for the Fox News network, told AFP that, "Fox gets direct feed.
 
Any actual counting of the votes by citizens is very rare in the United States except for a few counties in Montana and other states where paper ballots are still hand-counted. In most counties the ballots are treated as input data to be processed through computer systems controlled by private companies like ES&S.
 
In Cook County the ballot is inevitably a cluttered punch card with nearly 100 votes. After voting for the president and vice-president, a senator, and a Congressman, the voter has to wade through pages of choices to vote for some 80 local officials from the sanitation board to the state's general assembly. Every voter had to vote on nearly 80 judges.
 
As I voted, every ballot that was fed into the ES&S machine registered as an "undervote, as did mine.
 
Rather than holding separate elections for national and local officials, as is done in most countries, the Cook County ballot is extremely long and complicated. Officials who support electronic voting systems give the complexity of the ballot as the main reason why voting machines are necessary -- because it would take too much time to count the votes manually.
 
After calling and personally visiting ES&S headquarters in Omaha and Chicago, I can say it is the most secretive company I have ever come across. In August, I visited ES&S company headquarters on John Galt Blvd. in Omaha.
 
Although the company says it is the largest voting machine company in the United States, they were unable to provide any information about their company or their products. The ownership of the company is a closely-guarded secret. I asked to meet with Todd Urosevich, one of the two brothers that founded the company.
 
Bob and Todd Urosevich started ES&S as a company called Data Mark in the early 1980s. Today, Bob Urosevich heads Ohio-based Diebold Election Systems, a competitor of ES&S and the second largest U.S. manufacturer of electronic voting machines.
 
Together, the computerized ballot scanners and touch-screen voting machines systems made by ES&S and Diebold recorded some 80 percent of all votes cast in the recent U.S. presidential election.
 
As ES&S had no media relations person available and Todd Urosevich was not willing to be interviewed, the company's chief financial officer Tom O,Brien finally appeared. O,Brien, clearly displeased with my visit and questions, refused to provide any information about the company.
 
Although I was ill on Election Day, I knew I had to go to the county clerk's office to observe "counting of the vote. It is, after all, the only "counting open to the public. What I saw in Chicago, however, only made me more nauseous.
 
The only "vote count the press or public can observe in Chicago is what is projected on screens. The opening screen read: ES&S Automatic Election Returns, Release 35, Under License to the City of Chicago, Serial No. 0004, Copyright 1987.
 
Carl Zimmerman, technical supervisor for the clerk's office, said that the computer that ran the system was in the back, "in the ES&S room, he said.
 
At 7 p.m., Jonathan Lin, a worker on the county clerk's computer staff, came out and turned on the monitors on the 6th floor, where the City of Chicago votes were tallied and displayed. Behind him was Rick Thurman, an ES&S technician, checking the first results.
 
Thurman seemed surprised when I asked him if he worked for ES&S. He said that the company had about 6 engineers running the computer in the back room. He then checked himself, saying he had said too much.
 
Later I asked Lin who was actually operating the computer that was generating the results being shown on the monitors. "ES&S is running the mainframe for all of this, Lin said pointing to the television displays.
 
In the press room in the back I noticed stacks of boxes containing "Votamatic voting machines and "pre-punched ballots printed by ES&S of Addison, Texas, for the different precincts in Cook County. In the rear hallway behind the press room was the ES&S room. Only ES&S personnel were allowed into the room.
 
When I poked around in the hallway and peeked into the ES&S room an armed marshal and ES&S employee quickly appeared. In no condition for a confrontation, I made myself scarce.
 
I met a couple reporters from CLTV, a local cable channel of WGN. One of the reporters asked about my interest in the Chicago tallies. I said I was interested to see how a private company runs the elections in Chicago.
 
Seemingly unaware of how ES&S operates elections in Cook County, I explained the basics. "I've observed elections across Europe, I added, "from France and Germany to Serbia and Holland. Everywhere in Europe voting is done on paper ballots that are counted by the citizens -- except Holland.
 
Obviously uncomfortable with this discussion the reporter responded, "I'm glad I'm not in Serbia. I don't mind if a machine counts the votes.

Draft agency files notice to request record matching with Department of Education

The Selective Service filed a notice in the federal register three days before the election to check the computer records of the Department of Education for compliance with a law that requires all students receiving federal financial aid to register for the draft, RAW STORY has learned.

The notice, filed Oct. 28, was published today in the Federal Register.

Former Reagan Assistant Defense Secretary Lawrence Korb, who now works at a progressive thinktank, downplayed the significance of the notice. He said that the law mandating financial aid students to register was put in place by a Democratic congress in the early 1980s, after many failed to register.

Asked if he thought it gave any credence to rumors of a draft, he said, “Not as far as I know, no.”

“The purpose of this matching program is to ensure that the requirements of Section 12(f) of the Military Selective Service System Act,” the notice reads.

While not an unexpected request, in a time when Americans have been so worried about a draft that Congress had to pass legislation asserting a draft would not be reinstated, the request can only fuel increased speculation about a military draft plan for the war in Iraq. The New York Times reported last month that the military was exploring a medical draft in the event of a national security emergency.

“In addition, Section 12(f)(2) of the Military Selective Service System Act specifies that any person required to present himself for and submit to registration under Section 3 of the Military Selective Service System Act must file a statement with the institution of higher education where the person
intends to attend or is attending that he is in compliance with the Military Selective Service System Act,” the notice adds.

Korb added that while not a procedure done annually, the Selective Service is required by law to ensure aid students are registered.

“I would imagine they would have to,” he said. “Under the law they’re required to ensure that people don’t get financial aid if they haven’t registered.”
