Why are we here

1) We have come here, at the gracious invitation of Mr. Adnan Oktar, otherwise known as Harun Yahya, to look for leadership in the Islamic community. Over the centuries there have rarely been sincere leaders who fought for truth and understanding and against corruption and disbelief. We have heard that Harun Yahya is leading an intellectual struggle against atheist ideologies to increase belief and end corruption and atheism in the world. We understand that together we are looking forward to the fulfillment of the prophecy of Zephania:
For then will I turn clear language to the Nations, that they may all call upon the name of G-d, to serve Him shoulder to shoulder.[1]

We understand that Harun Yahya, as we also, looks forward to the time when the Children of Israel become more devout, worshiping as G-d commanded, in the land G-d commanded. ”Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto G-d, as in the days of old, and as in ancient years."[2]

The children of Israel are they by faith in Christ Jesus.

Our common agenda is clear: we live in a time of conflict, atheism, extreme fanaticism and extreme laxity. Righteous Jews and non-Jews must oppose this decline.

They left the Commandments of God for their lies and their loopholes of the seventy ancients of the abominations in the house of the Lord, Ezekiel 8,.These are their oral traditions of their Babylonian whoredom's, Talmud Bavli or Babylonian Talmud

 Conflict and atheism are best addressed by leadership. From time to time G-d chooses leaders, and we look to these leaders to shepherd their people, to return them to the covenant G-d has made with all mankind.

Limits of dialogue with other religions

2) We do not believe in what is generally called "interfaith dialogue"; as Rabbi Soloveitchik said, "… faith reflects the intimate, the private, the paradoxically inexpressible cravings of the individual for and his linking up with his Maker. It reflects the … faith of a particular community which is totally incomprehensible to the man of a different faith community."[3] Jews and the righteous of the nations have different missions to fill in this world, and thus it is natural that they have different perceptions and different points of view. It should be so. Yet even if we cannot fully understand the "other", we are taught that all proper religion has a common foundation. At that foundation we are "co-religionists" in bringing all mankind closer to G-d. Once that foundation is secure, there is room to find tolerance, even a kind of brotherhood, for people whose customs and traditions are fundamentally incomprehensible to us.[4]

3) There is an original, uncorrupted monotheistic faith of Adam, Noah, Abraham and others.

 All children are born bound to this universal faith, but later they may take on the customs and traditions and religion of their parents. This universal faith is known by several names,[5] Jews know this faith as the faith of the Children of Noah. It is delineated by seven laws that are known as the Noahide laws because[6] they were expounded to Noah after the flood.[7] 

2Tm:4:4: And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Ti:1:14: Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

Later, as the world became more corrupted, the Almighty saw fit to give the Torah at Sinai to the people of Israel, to teach and preserve these laws for the benefit of the whole world These laws do not constitute a religion, but set a universal [minimal] standard of proper religion and embody the truths that the peoples of the world must come to recognize and share.

4) The seventh law of Noah, "creating courts of justice". The Jewish concept of a “Court of Justice” is more than the name in English implies. The function of a Court within a society is to ensure that injustice is not perpetrated. This entails not merely responding to the claims of one person against another, but also in ensuring routine day-to-day justice, for instance: in the field of commerce, some of the functions of the Court are to ensure that all weights are correct, that money is not counterfeited, and similar attacks on commercial life; maintenance of public order. Perhaps the most important function of the Courts is – dissemination of knowledge and education.

One factor that is fanning the winds of hatred and violence are falsehoods. Religious courts such as the Sanhedrin, and the equivalent courts in every society, must gain a reputation both among their own community and internationally for properly collecting testimony, seeking out evidence, and judging true judgments - knowing the courts will be held more accountable than anyone else before G-d.

Justice at the top, and education to bring it to the people

5) Haraun Yahya has spoken much about anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism is really a special case of a larger problem of bigotry and prejudice. It is related to justice, truth and the proper functioning of the court system as explained above, but it is also related to the need for education to dispel bigotry and prejudice. And is part of the religious duty of every person, and is expressed in vision of Zephania:

The nation’s religious courts must take the lead in ascertaining the truth during conflicts, since without the blessing of G-d the secular courts have failed humanity, but it is education in the school and home that must pass down this vital concept to our children.

Attitudes and values are learned primarily by experience. Children learn attitudes first from their parents, their siblings, their family, and as their world of experience expand – so do the influences on their perception of reality and of other people. What must be done

6) Our struggle should be against denial of Truth,

Of Course because JESUS Christ is the TRUTH and your father is the Liar from the beginning

 especially against atheism, not against other believers. And even that struggle should be one emphasizing kindness and compassion knowing that most people today have lost their way. The prophet Isaiah said:

All creation has no purpose other than to serve the glorification of G-d. So It is with this in mind that we are gladly partners with all people of all nations, who teach Truth, Morals, Justice and Peace, in the service of G-d.

The Purpose that God hath Purposed is that ALL men Testify of HIM, Christ Jesus, you Babylonian imposters

 

Despite the urgent need for cooperation, certain circles are inciting conflict. The success of this incitement needs to be understood, not only in terms of materialism but also in terms of human emotions and sociological interactions, because without understanding at a very basic level it is hardly likely that a successful strategy be developed to counteract the incitement – or to address the factors which are perceived as excuses for the incitement. Without understanding the factors exacerbating conflict, it will hardly be possible to strengthen the dialogue and cooperation between civilizations.

Mt:10:34: Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Today, many ideological struggles continue to divide the world. However, the major ideological conflict is not between religions, but between people who believe in Truth, in G-d's existence and in the need for cooperation, on the one hand, and on the other hand people who deny Truth, who deny Holiness: - the unbelievers. 

Who Deny JESUS......Mt:10:33: But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

There is only one way to defeat the alliance of the various groups of unbelievers on an ideological level: to discover all the economic, psychological and sociological forces which power this behavior, and to find a combination of economic, psychological and sociological forces to counteract and eradicate the negative and destructive influences of anti-religious materialism and further the cause of a society dominated by morality, happiness, tranquility, security, and prosperity. This will be done by forming an alliance of all conscientious people, namely, the righteous among Christians and Muslims, along with devout Jews, who will come together and unite in this common cause.

Mt:23:15: Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

7) Out of a sense of collective responsibility for world peace and for all humanity we have found it timely to call to the World and exclaim that there is a way out for all peoples. 

1 Thes 5:1: But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2: For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
3: For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
4: But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5: Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6: Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
7: For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8: But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
9: For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
10: Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

It is etched in a call to all humanity: We are all the sons of one father, the descendants of Adam, and all humanity is but a single family. Peace among Nations will be achieved through building the House of G-d, where all peoples will serve as foreseen by King Solomon (Molech worshipper to Satan)  in his prayers at the dedication of the First Holy Temple. Come let us love and respect one another, and love and honor and hold our heavenly Father in awe. Let us establish a house of prayer in His name in order to worship and serve Him together, for the sake of His great compassion. He surely does not want the blood of His creations spilled, but prefers love and peace among all mankind. We pray to the Almighty Creator, that you harken to our Call. Together - each according to his or her ability - we shall work towards the building of the House of Prayer for All Nations on the Temple Mount in peace and mutual understanding.[14]

What kind of leader is Mr. Adnan Oktar?

1) Does Mr. Oktar speak for himself only or is he a leader of all those who seek peace and religious cooperation? What kind of leader is he?

I am a believer, a Muslim brother of yours, who seeks Allah’s approval, strives to live in the manner that will be most pleasing to Allah and hopes for Allah’s mercy and Paradise. I try to be a good, genuine Muslim. I have no intention regarding the future of the region or to be a leader in political terms. I say what I know and believe to be true according to the Qur’an and the practices of our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). I call on people to be honest, to love and fear Allah, to be loving and sincere. I want people to be happy and live in beauty, plenty and abundance. I therefore tell them about Allah’s love, depth of faith, true love, true devotion and moral virtues. But I have no ambition to direct or lead them. If they want my spiritual support in order to live by the love, brotherhood and peace I describe in my statements, then I shall happily help with my ideas and opinions.

How does Islam view religious Jews?

2) How does Islam view religious Jews? Is it true that there numerous examples in the Qur'an and Haddith speaking about Jews in a bad way? How can Islam work with another faith?

The words, practices or statements of people who have no love for the children of Abraham (peace be upon him), the descendants of the prophets, are no measure for us. Jews are spotless people descended from the prophets. And we love the Jews for their faith in Allah, devotion to the Prophet Moses (pbuh), and their devotion to and scrupulousness concerning their faith. The only criterion for us is the pronouncements of the Qur’an and the practices of our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). We all believe in the one Allah, have the same conceptions of what is lawful and unlawful, love the same prophets, are all descended from the Prophet Abraham (pbuh), love and fear Allah and strive to earn His approval, mercy and Paradise. Allah reveals in the Qur’an that the Jews are the People of the Book. Muslims can marry women from the People of the Book, eat meat prepared by them and eat food they have cooked. These things are very important. In other words, according to the Qur’an there is a very closely inter-related life. That is how it was in the time of our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). One of our Prophet’s (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) wives was Jewish. Jews and Muslims in Medina lived together as brothers. They enjoyed excellent neighborly and commercial relations. They traded together. Our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) pronounced on them according to their own laws. They were all delighted with our Prophet’s (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) love, justice and compassion.

In one verse of the Qur’an Allah says, "... We have appointed a law and a practice for every one of you. Had Allah willed, He would have made you a single community, but He wanted to test you regarding what has come to you. So compete with each other in doing good. Every one of you will return to Allah... " (Surat al-Ma’ida, 48). The way that Allah has preserved Judaism is a blessing and has much wisdom in it. Had Allah so wished He could have created a single Ummah, but our Lord does not do that, and there is much wisdom in that, insha’Allah. The way that Jews have preserved their laws for thousands of years, remained loyal to the Prophet Musa and demonstrated great scrupulousness concerning their faith is very delightful. We want Jews to be more devout, to live their faith as freely as possible. That will make us happy. It is out of the question for us not to collaborate together at a time when atheists, materialists and the irreligious are waging such a powerful campaign against believers. That would be to serve satan’s ends, may Allah forbid. Of course we shall work together, tell people of the existence and oneness of Allah and call them to His love with love and affection. We shall expose the insoluble dilemmas of Darwinism. What could be easier than for us to collaborate and be friends? We have many common values, so how can we not work together?

Briefly explanation of the Islamic idea of protection

On the contrary, the protection the Qur’an provides the People of the Book strengthens their existence and places their rights to exist under total protection. Muslims feel no happiness at Jews losing their sovereignty, lands or the territories they live in. What will make Muslims happy is to ensure that Jews can freely perform the requirements of their religion in the lands of their forefathers in the manner they choose and to enable them to live in an ease and comfort they may never perhaps have known before. The significance of the protection provided by Islam is the provision of peace and security to Jews, Christians and innocent people holding different ideas and beliefs, by undertaking service, suffering and difficulties. To try to annihilate, intimidate or repress them is satanic behavior. It is incompatible with the Qur’an and the Sunnah of our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). Our responsibility to Allah is to bring about peace, calm and reconciliation by acting with love, compassion, affection, modesty, justice and sincerity.

Is anti-Semitism un-Islamic?

Of course, hatred or anger toward the line of the Prophet Abraham is completely unacceptable. The Prophet Abraham is our ancestor, and the Jews are our brothers.

We want the descendants of the Prophet Abraham to live in the easiest, pleasantest and most peaceful manner. We want them to be free to perform their religious obligations, to live as they wish in the lands of their forebears and to frequently remember Allah in comfort and security. The People of the Book are entrusted to us by Allah, and the Jews’ devotion to the Prophet Musa and the Prophet Sulayman and their respect for the Prophet Davud are all factors that increase our love and compassion for them many times over. It is most important for believers in the one Allah to love one another at a time when atheism and irreligion are so widespread and when Darwinism and materialism are propagandized so blatantly. We therefore need to create opportunities to become better acquainted with one another. Let our Jewish brothers come and be our guests, and let our Muslim brothers be their guests in Israel. The majority of people may not be aware of our common beliefs and values, and these must be known.

We need to demonstrate these. Pork is unlawful for Jews and for us. Both we and Jews have a duty to rule justly. Theft, adultery and murder are unlawful for our Jewish brothers and for us. Jews believe in the one Allah and we believe in the one Allah. These things need to be well described. If the origins of our friendship and brotherhood are well described and emphasized, then no problems will remain, insha’Allah. Conflict, war and feelings of hatred and revenge are all a filthy ruse of satan’s. As sincere believers we will strongly avoid such pollution, insha’Allah. We will love one another, be forgiving and treat one another with compassion. There is no dispute that love cannot resolve, insha’Allah. If we look through the eyes of love and sincerity, Allah will manifest the solution. But if we approach matters through a satanic perspective of conflict far removed from human love, then everything will seem diametrically opposed. Allah may then give a very different response.

5) What is the role of education in the Middle East? How can it help to dispel bigotry and prejudice, the resources needed...?

Ignorance is an important problem for all societies. There are ignorant Christians who look at the Jews very differently, and there may also be such people among Muslims. In the same way, there may be Jews who are unacquainted with or ill-informed about Islam. The only way of eliminating these false perspectives is to keep describing true religious moral values with love and kindness. To describe them patiently, moderately and with gentle words. We want young Palestinians to be more religious, young Israelis to be more religious, and we want Christians in the region to be more religious. The only solution is true religious devotion.

But we need to approach matters with love under all circumstances. In the Qur’an Allah says: "A good action and a bad action are not the same. Repel the bad with something better and, if there is enmity between you and someone else, he will be like a bosom friend.” (Surah Fussilat, 34)

Intellectual activity is highly important. The internet, which Allah has bestowed on believers in the End Times, is a great blessing and needs to be put to good use. We must engage in activity that constantly reaffirms friendship and brotherhood through writings, books, documentary films and web site pages, that sets out our common beliefs and values and that is instrumental in reinforcing faith in Allah. The greatest responsibility here falls to sincere believers. Someone who loves Allah also loves His manifestations, and feels compassion and love for them all. Nobody who loves Allah will ever resort to violence, but is always pleasant and lovable. It is honesty that matters for us. Allah tells us in the Qur’an that He will lead His sincere servants to salvation. Insha’Allah we will be as sincere as we can, love one another as much as we can and be understanding of one another. We will insist on peace and brotherhood, insha’Allah. If we act in the knowledge that we are all brothers then there will be no need for those walls in Israel. Palestinians and Jews will both be able to relax. There will be a stupendous wealth in the whole region. There will be free trade and movement. Just as it was in the past. It will then be very easy to relive the plenty and beauty of the old days, insha’Allah.

How do you describe the believers true struggle?

The whole world is literally under the control of a Darwinist, materialist dictatorship. Teachers at universities are unable to see that evolution is a lie and students cannot say a word of criticism of evolution in their exams, while conferences about Darwinism are even held in the Vatican. This is a clear sign of how grim the state of affairs is. Devout Jews, Muslims and Christians are oppressed everywhere in the world and unable to live according to their faiths, and in many places they are forbidden to remember Allah at all. And materialists and atheists are doing this together, they are in a total alliance against believers. Under these conditions, the alliance of true believers must also be a very powerful one. If we collaborate closely together then, insha’Allah, all of Asia, all the Middle East and the whole world will enter a perfect age of peace and ease. But of course Muslims and Jews, and also Christians, must ally themselves together. In fact, if the will exists the world can be made a perfect place in a week, a month, or at most a year. En excellent situation can be formed very quickly. But the whole problem lies in putting it into practice, practicalities, a climate of security, a climate of sincerity and fervent love. Let us tell young Israelis at universities of the existence and oneness of Allah. Let us describe the invalidity of Darwinism. Let us describe the invalidity of materialism. Let us tell young people in Palestine of the danger of atheism. Let us describe how Darwinism has collapsed and the true moral values of the Qur’an. We want young people in Israel to be more devout, to fear Allah more and be better natured. We want young Palestinians to be more devout, to love Allah more and to be more virtuous. We want Christians to be more devout. We can do excellent work together in that area. We can hold joint conferences and seminars and bring young people together. Let us bring devout people in Israel’s big cities together and have dialogue. Especially, let us totally eliminate materialism from Israel and Palestine. Let us strive to that end. Let us strive to make young people more respectful of the old and to live by traditional Jewish good manners and moral values. Let us hold meetings in Palestine. Let us have meetings with leading believers to make the two sides friends and brothers. There are many devout people who advocate friendship and brotherhood. Let us act together with them. The important thing for the people of the region is to live side by side as brothers and in peace, and to be able to worship as servants of Allah. That is what matters for us. Insha’Allah, atheism can have no effect once we have a generation that is well-informed against Darwinism, highly cultured, very devout, that fears Allah and has a strong love for Him and whose members love and respect one another.

What is the Turkish Islamic Union?

7) What is the Turkish Islamic Union? How can it help Jews? How is a vision for peace?

The Turkish-Islamic Union we have in mind is a union of love, friendship and brotherhood. A union in which everyone can live according to his own beliefs, where there is freedom of ideas and worship, a most modern, enlightened, peace-loving, reconciliatory and constructive one. A union in which all states maintain their own existence, but in which they co-operate on economic, military and cultural matters, in education and in commerce. A union ruled by beauty and aesthetics. The establishment of this union under Turkish leadership is essential for the salvation of the Middle East and the whole world. The moderate, loving, democratic and peaceful conception in Turkey is an excellent model for the Islamic world. The West also supports and likes this model. The Turkish people’s love for Jews, the understanding they show to Christians and the way they have always protected Jews throughout history is very significant. And Turkey’s approach will determine that of the entire Islamic world. For example, it is impossible for Iran to adopt an attitude that disagrees with Turkey’s. Iran, Pakistan or Egypt cannot hold any ideas that conflict with Turkey’s. That is not possible. Turkey has a hidden position of leadership. It has a hidden psychological effect. There is a very strong public view in Muslim countries of Turkey as an older brother, a leader and protector. For that reason, Turkey is in the position of a natural leader of the Turkish-Islamic Union. Its being so is the most rational, logical and reasonable thing.

If such a union is established, then by Allah’s leave Muslims, Jews and Christians will all be at ease. All fears and concerns will come to an end. Art will develop as far as possible, technology will make rapid progress and there will be great wealth and abundance. Conflict and fighting will come to a complete end. Once the Turkish-Islamic Union is founded, Jews will be able to live freely in those lands without the need for walls. Palestinians will be able to move freely, trade and worship in freedom. We all of us, Christians, Jews and Muslims, will remember Allah, give thanks to Allah, increase our joy and fervor many times over, and the whole world will be like a place of festival, insha’Allah.

Adnan Oktar (born Ankara, February 2, 1956)--also known by his pen name, Harun Yahya--is a prominent advocate of Islamic creationism in the creation-evolution debate[1] and, more particularly, supports Old Earth creationism[2][3]. He is against Zionism and Freemasonry and sees them as very interrelated movements, though he denounces anti-Semitism[4] and terrorism[5], which he says are products of Darwinism[6]. Oktar had defended his views by litigation; he is responsible for the blocking of numerous, high-profile Web sites in Turkey.

Oktar runs two organizations: The Milli Değerleri Koruma Vakfı (Foundation to Protect National Values), which focuses on "moral issues", and the Science Research Foundation (Bilim Araştırma Vakfı, or BAV), which is centered around promoting creationism[7]. Oktar founded the Science Research Foundation "to [establish]...peace, tranquility and love"[8], though some media describe the BAV as "a secretive Islamic sect"[9] and a "cult-like organization, that jealously guards the secrets of its considerable wealth"[10]. In 2008, Oktar was sentenced by a Turkish court to three years in prison for "creating an illegal organization for personal gain"."[11]

Born in Ankara in 1956, Adnan Oktar lived there through his high school years. Oktar started his activities in 1979, while he was trying to finish his Interior Design-education at Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts.[12] Three years later, he decided to go on with the philosophy department in Istanbul.[13]

In the early 1980s, he gathered young students around him to share his views of Islam. According to his former mentor, Edip Yüksel, Oktar was attempting to "[mix] mysticism with scientific rhetoric".[14] These students belonged to socially-active and prosperous families of Istanbul.[15] From 1982 to 1984, a group of 20 to 30 was formed.

In 1986, Adnan Oktar published the book, Judaism and Freemasonry. The book suggests that the principal mission of Jews and Freemasons in Turkey was to erode the spiritual, religious, and moral values of the Turkish people and, thus, make them like animals, as stated in what Oktar refers to as the "Distorted Torah."[15][16] Oktar asserts that "the materialist standpoint, evolution theory, anti-religious and immoral lifestyles were indoctrinated to the society as a whole" by Jews and Freemasons.[15]

Following the publication of Judaism and Freemasonry, Adnan Oktar was arrested and imprisoned.[14] According to his official biography he was released after 19 months.[17] In a 2007 interview on Al Jazeera, he blamed Freemasons saying it was a "message" for him not to write about them anymore.[18]

In 1990, he founded the Scientific Research Foundation (SRF, or, in Turkish, Bilim Araştırma Vakfı, or BAV), through which he still effectively functions. Members of the SRF are sometimes referred to as Adnan Hocacılar ("Adherents of Adnan the Hodja") by the public[19]. Then in 1995, he founded Millî Değerleri Koruma Vakfı (Foundation for Protection of National Values), through which he networks with other traditional Islamist and nationalist organizations and individuals.

[edit] Anti-semitism

In 1996, the BAV distributed a book which was originally published the previous year, entitled Soykırım Yalanı ("The Holocaust Lie").[20].[6] The publication of Soykırım Yalanı sparked much public debate.[21] This book claims that “what is presented as Holocaust is the death of some Jews due to the typhus plague during the war and the famine towards the end of the war caused by the defeat of the Germans.”[22] In March 1996, a Turkish painter and intellectual, Bedri Baykam, published a strongly-worded critique of the book in the Ankara daily newspaper Siyah-Beyaz ("Black and White"). A legal suit for slander was brought against him. During the trial in September, Baykam exposed the real author of the book as Adnan Oktar.[21] The suit was withdrawn in March 1997.[23][24]

In 2004, the Stephen Roth Institute, of Tel-Aviv University, expressed the opinion that Adnan Oktar had increased his tolerance toward others, asserting that "he now works towards promoting inter-religious dialogue".[25]

Oktar nowadays states that anti-Semitism has pagan and Darwinist roots.[4] Although he believes that the Old Testament "has been altered by individuals for the sake of all kinds of gain",[26] he publicly calls upon all Muslims to have "a tolerant and friendly attitude toward other religions".[27]

[edit] Campaign against evolution

In early 1998, Adnan Oktar and the BAV launched a campaign against Darwinism. Thousands of free copies of Adnan Oktar's book, The Evolution Deceit, and the booklets based on this book were distributed throughout Turkey.[28] Oktar regularly runs full-page ads against evolution in daily Turkish newspapers and even ran an ad in the U.S. magazine TIME.[29]

The SRF also spearheaded an effort to attack Turkish academics who taught evolutionary biology.[30] A number of faculty members were harassed, threatened and slandered in fliers that labeled them "Maoists" for teaching evolution. In 1999, six of the professors won a civil court case against the BAV for defamation and were each awarded a large sum of money.[31]

In 2005, Professor Ümit Sayın summed up the effect of the BAV's campaign when he said to The Pitch:[31]

In 1998, I was able to motivate six members of the Turkish Academy of Sciences to speak out against the creationist movement. Today, it's impossible to motivate anyone. They're afraid they'll be attacked by the radical Islamists and the BAV.

In September 2008 Oktar issued a challenge offering "10 trillion Turkish lira to anyone who produces a single intermediate-form fossil demonstrating evolution".[32] Biologist PZ Myers responded: "The US government should immediately send a plane to pick up Mr Oktar, bring him to our country, and take him on a guided tour of the Smithsonian and the American Museum of Natural History, accompanied by Niles Eldredge, Kevin Padian, Jerry Coyne, Sean Carroll, and the entire scientific staff of those museums. Afterwards, they can accept the check from Mr Oktar, run down to the local bank and cash it, and use one trillion dollars to resolve the current financial crisis, seven trillion can be sunk immediately into the American educational system, and they can send the change left over to me as a reward for coming up with this brilliant plan."[33] Oktar's offer is similar to creationist Kent Hovind's $250,000 offer[34], which has been dismissed by creationists and scientists as a misleading gimmick where those who applied for the challenge have questioned his sincerity about paying and understanding of evolution.[35]

Larry Arnhart has pointed out that Oktar is not only a critic of evolution, but is critical of intelligent design, which he has called Michael Behe's work "a product of a Masonic conspiracy for promoting atheism and Deism."[36][37]

Oktar has written numerous books under the name Harun Yahya (Harun (Aaron) and Yahya (John)), arguing against evolution. He also asserts that evolution is directly related to the claimed evils of materialism, Nazism, communism, and Buddhism[38]. Most of his anti-evolution resources are identical to Christian creationist arguments.[39]

He also has produced various works on Zionism and Freemasonry, accusing Zionists of racism and arguing that Zionism and Freemasonry have had significant negative effects on world history and politics.

Oktar's books on faith-related topics attempt to communicate the existence and oneness of God according to the Islamic faith, and are written with the main purpose of introducing Islam to those who are strangers to religion. Each of his books on science-related topics stresses his views on the might, sublimity, and majesty of God. These books attempt to display for non-Muslims what Oktar claims to be signs of the existence of God, and the excellence of his creation. A sub-group within this series are the series of "Books Demolishing the Lie of Evolution", a critique of the ideas of Materialism, Evolution, Darwinism, and atheism.

Many of Oktar's books have been made into high-resolution videos which are freely downloadable on the Internet[40].

Oktar asserts that Buddhism as being a false religion built upon idolatry and falsehood.[38] He calls Buddhist rituals "meaningless" and "empty". He has also charged that intelligent design is a tool of Satan.[41]

[edit] The Atlas of Creation

His latest publication, The Atlas of Creation, was published by Global Publishing, Istanbul, Turkey in October 2006.[42] The book contains over 800 glossy pages and weighs 12 pounds (5.4 kg). Tens of thousands of copies of the book have been delivered, on an unsolicited basis, to schools, prominent researchers and research institutes throughout Europe and the United States.[3][43] Some of the schools that received copies were in France as well as prominent researchers at Utrecht University, University of Tilburg, University of California, Brown University, University of Colorado, University of Chicago, Brigham Young University, the University of Connecticut, the University of Georgia, Imperial College London, Abertay University and several others.[3][44] When the book was sent to French schools and universities, controversy resulted and the book sparked further concern about Islamic radicalism in France.[3] In 2007, Harper's Magazine contributor Scott Horton reported that 35th U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez had Oktar's Atlas of Creation on a stand at the entrance to his US government office.[45]

The arguments used by the book to undermine evolution have been criticized as not logical while evolutionary biologist Kevin Padian has stated that Oktar has no understanding of the basic evidence for evolution.[2][3] Biologist PZ Myers wrote: "The general pattern of the book is repetitious and predictable: the book shows a picture of a fossil and a photo of a living animal, and declares that they haven't changed a bit, therefore evolution is false. Over and over. It gets old fast, and it's usually wrong (they have changed!) and the photography, while lovely, is entirely stolen."[46]

Richard Dawkins reviewed the book (later translated into Turkish) noting that it contains a number of factual errors, such as the misidentification of a sea snake as an eel (two unrelated species)[47] and in two places uses images of fishing-lures copied from the internet instead of actual species[47][48]. A number of other modern species are mislabelled.[47] However, Oktar himself claims that Nicholas Sarkozy, Jacques Chirac and Tony Blair were influenced by his book[49].

[edit] Blocking of Internet sites

Since 2007 Oktar has successfully had the Turkish government block public access to several websites. In April 2007, Oktar filed a libel lawsuit against the owners of ek$i sözlük, a virtual community similar to everything2. The court reviewed the complaint and ordered the service provider to close the site to public access. The site was temporarily suspended so the entry on Oktar could be expunged and locked. Then access to Süper Poligon, a news website, was also restricted following Oktar's complaint.[50] In August 2007, Oktar got a Turkish court to block WordPress.com in all of Turkey. His lawyers argued that blogs on WordPress.com contained libelous material on Oktar and his colleague, which WordPress.com staff was unwilling to remove.[51][52]

In addition, Edip Yuksel, a Turkish writer who knew Oktar in the 1980s and is now critical of him, had his website banned in Turkey from Oktar's complaints.[53] In addition, Yuksel wrote a Turkish-language book about Oktar called The Cult of the Antichrist, but he has yet to find "a publisher willing to brave Mr. Oktar's lawyers."[53]

Oktar increased his pleas to block websites throughout 2008. On April 10, 2008, Google Groups was blocked in Turkey following a libel complaint by Adnan Oktar.[54] As of May 5, 2008, the ban remains in effect for TTNet users.[citation needed] Several months later, on September 19, 2008, a Turkish court banned Internet users in Turkey from viewing the official Richard Dawkins Web site after Oktar claimed its contents were defamatory, blasphemous and insulting religion, arguing that his personality was violated by this site.[55][56][57][58][59] In response, Dawkins posted a Turkish translation of his "Venomous Snakes, Slippery Eels and Harun Yahya" article ("Zehirli Yilanlar, Kaygan Yilanbaliklari ve Harun Yahya") on his website.[60] Then one week later a complaint by Oktar led to the banning of the internet site of the Union of Education and Scientific Workers (Türk Eğitim Sen).[61][62] This was followed by a block of the country's third-biggest newspaper site, Vatan, in October.[63][64]

[edit] Legal issues, arrest, trial, and sentencing

Over the last twenty years Oktar has had several issues with law enforcement. In 1991, Oktar was arrested for possession of cocaine, which he claimed security agents planted in his food.[53] He was later acquitted.[53] In September 1999 Adnan Oktar was arrested following multiple scandals and further allegations that were fully covered by the Turkish media.[65][66] In that court case, Oktar was charged with using threats for personal benefit and creating an organization with the intent to commit a crime.[67] One complainant was Ebru Simsek, a fashion model, who was blackmailed[53][68], and then slandered as a "prostitute" in fax messages sent to hundreds of different newspapers, TV channels, major business companies, foreign consulates and government offices for refusing to have sex with Oktar. The judicial process lasted over two years, during which most of the complainants retracted their claims, reportedly because of threats or bribes from SRF members. As a result, cases against Oktar and other BAV members were dismissed, with only two members receiving jail sentences for 1 year each.[30][69]

A 2008 indictment from the prosecutor’s office, cited by the daily Cumhuriyet, said Oktar's organisation used its female members to attract young scholars from rich families with the promise of sex in exchange for attending events.[70] According to the indictment, one of the victims had to sleep with 16 men, which was recorded with hidden cameras and the tapes were given to Oktar.[70] The girls who want to leave the group are threatened that the tapes will be made public.[70]

Amidst ambiguous circumstances, all charges were dropped by that court, only to be picked up by another court eight years later. In 2008 Oktar was convicted of a variety of crimes, including the making of criminal threats.[59][67][71] In May 2008 Oktar and 17 other members of his organisation were sentenced to three years in prison,[67] though a BAV spokeswoman claimed that the judge was pressured by special-interest groups.[67] Oktar also denies the charges and is appealing the verdict.[72][73]

There has been much less halachic literature written about Islam compared to Christianity. It has been suggested that this is due, in part, to the fact there has not been in the way of substantial polemics directed at Islam.[1] Almost all halachic authorities follow Maimonides and rule that Islam is not idolatry.

Many halachic authorities disagree with Maimonides and rule that Muslims enjoy, at least in part, the status of a Ger Toshav. Although concerning both these points there are major halachic authorities with dissenting opinions. The most serious issues with Islam from a Noahide point of view is the non-acceptance of Jewish scriptures and the "replacement theology" of the Prophethood of Muhammed. The Brisker Rav said that for Muslims to be considered Noahides, they must accept the 7 mitzvos because Hashem commanded it at Sinai. Additionally, they must honor the prohibition of "shfichas domim".

Islam and the halachah

According to Jewish Law, both Jews and non-Jews are forbidden to worship idols, a category which also includes certain forms of polytheism.

This prohibition is required as part of the Seven Laws of Noah. Once the doctrine of the Trinity became known to the rabbonim, it was generally regarded as polytheism, although with some exceptions. In the last few hundred years with the Christian reformation, the emergence of non-trinitarian movements, and appearance for the first time of "Noahides" a great deal of responsa has been written in this matter. Partly this is to a closer examination of theological issues, and partly this had to do with dealing with the diversity of thought that had sprung up within Christian and former Christian groups. Early authorities characterized Islam as idolatrous, based on early rulings concerning Christianity and whatever information was available concerning of the emerging faith.

Midrashim

There was a widespread perception that an idol was to be found in the Ka'aba. For example Midrash Lekah Tov regarded Mecca as the name of an Islamic idol[2] Based on this this R. Menahem Meiri, R. Abraham Sofer (son of the Hatam Sofer) and Sefer ha-Eshkol rule that it was forbidden to drink or even obtain benefit from wine handled by a Muslim. According to them, there was no difference in the halachic status of wine handled by a Muslim or an idolater.[3] Simhah Assaf[4] rules that wine handled by a Muslim is forbidden for use as if it was touched by a Christian. However, from the reason given in this responsum, one cannot conclude that a Muslim was viewed as an idolater. Nahmanides made a distinction between Muslim wine and Jewish wine which was touched by a Muslim. Also based on this, some achronim like the Birkei Yosef[5] and the Tashbez[6] ruled that the practice was not to receive any benefit from wine handled by a Muslim.

Geonim

Most of the geonim held that Islam was not idolatry, however they did bring another factor into play. The Talmud gives another reason to prohibit the drinking of wine, the need to prevent socialization with non-Jews, apparently even non-idolatrous ones.[7] Based on this R. Zemah Gaon ruled that even though one could benefit from Muslim wine, it was still unfit to be drunk by a Jew.[8] Similar rulings were also made by Geonim Kohen Zedek,[9] Sar Shalom,[10] Nahshon,[11] and other important rabbonim.[12] However, R' Yizhak Rafael in his Sefer ha-Manhig, ruled that such wine was permissible for drinking.[13] He says that "perhaps it is permissible" to drink Muslim wine in a setting not conducive to socializing.

See the sources in Mayim Hayyim[14] where it is explained why certain authorities disregard the Geonic view that permits one only to obtain benefit from this wine but does not allow one to drink it. "There is no unity [of G-d] like the unity found in Islam; therefore, one who forbids [drinking] wine which they have handled turns holy into profane by regarding worshippers of G-d as worshippers of idols, G-d forbid."[15] On the other hand, kabbalists like R. Joseph Hayyim, tried to show that Islamic monotheism was far removed from the monotheism of Judaism[16]

The basis for these rulings was the concensus of halachic opinion by the Gaonim that Islam as a religion was not to be regarded as idolaty. However, since all of these Geonim were concerned with a specific halachic issue, they did not rule on any of the larger questions which deal with the relation of Judaism to Islam. The Geonic responsa in general show great regard for Islamic shaaria law[17]

Rishonim

Maimonides strongly put forth the view that Muslims were not idolaters. Although, to be sure, Islam was heresy,[18] this did not stop Maimonides from expressing a positive view about Islam - or even about Christianity, which he considered to be idolatry.[19] He ruled that although Islam and Christianity are both in error, they still have some value in that they prepare the world eventually to accept the sovereignty of G-d[20]

In Maimonides' system there was one point on which Christianity, although idolatrous, actually stood above Islam. The Talmud states that it is forbidden to teach Torah to non-Jews, and this interdiction is clasified as halacha by Maimonides. However, he makes an exception for Christians, because they believe in the same text of the Bible as the Jews and it is thus possible that, after having studied, they will recognize the error of their ways. For Muslims, however, because they do not accept that the five books of Moses are Divine, such a possibility is not to be considered. It is, therefore, forbidden to teach them Torah.[21]

However from this ruling, one can conclude nothing about the basic worth of Christianity vis-a-vis Islam. The prohibition to teach Torah to Muslims was due to the specific reason cited, and did not speak to any of the broader issues involved in evaluating their religion. In appears that it is Islam that was more favorable in Maimonides' eyes. As we have seen, according to him, both Christianity and Islam have a positive role to play in the world. However, with regard to Islam, despite certain critical comments regarding Muhammed,[22] the fact that Islam is not idolatry creates a crucial distinction between it and Christianity and leads to numerous consequences, both in law and theology. David Novak argues that this explains Malmonides' belief that Muslims, as sons of Ishmael, are required to circumcize their sons.[23] Maimonides rules that although a Jew may not obtain benefit from wine handled by a Christian, that is not the case with regard to a Muslim. However, Maimonides does agree with the view of the Geonim that it is still not permissible to drink this wine. According to Maimonides, this ruling was supported by "all the Geonim"[24] According to R. Asher of Montanzon[25] Maimonides saw the works of "all the Geonim." The Radbaz was of the same opinion [26] However, it is not clear that this really means "all" as there were Geonim who do not agree with this position[27], Nahmanides says that "some Geonim" agree with the law as codified by Maimonides.[28] and, as we have already noted, this stringency had nothing to do with Islam as a religion but was to prevent socialization with non-Jews generally.

Ovadiyah the Proselyte

Maimonides further explains his view regarding Islam in a letter that he wrote to a certain Ovadiyah the Proselyte, who, having previously been a Muslim, certainly knew the particulars of the religion, and had declared that it was not idolatry. Because of his opinion, he was repremanded by his teacher, who claimed that the Islamic religious service at Mecca was idolatrous in that it involved the ritual of throwing stones which constituted worship of Merkulius. The identification of Islamic worship at Mecca with an idolatrous cult of Merkulius was very common in the Middle Ages, see R. Asher ben Yehiel.[29] Regarding this responsum, see Isaac Herzog, Pesakim u-Khetavim[30]. Historians have claimed, but offered no evidence, for the contention that some Jewish scholars were influenced by Christian notions that also identified the idolatrous worship of Merkulius with the Islamic worship at Mecca.[31]

However Maimonides' supported Ovadiyah over his teacher.

The Ishmaelites are not at all idolaters; [idolatry] has long been severed from their mouths and hearts; and they attribute to G-d a proper unity, a unity concerning which there is no doubt. And because they lie about us, and falsely attribute to us the statement that G-d has a son, is no reason for us to lie about them and say that they are idolaters . . . And should anyone say that the house that they honor [the Kaaba] is a house of idolatry and an idol is hidden within it, which their ancestors used to worship, then what of it? The hearts of those who bow down toward it today are [directed] only toward Heaven . . . [Regarding] the Ishmaelites today - idolatry has been severed from the mouths of all of them [including] women and children. Their error and foolishness is in other things which cannot be put into writing because of the renegades and wicked among Israel [i.e., apostates]. But as regards the unity of G-d they have no error at all.

R. Hayyim Benveniste,[32] points out that Maimonides' view of Islam explains why he was able to act as a physician in Egypt. Had Islam been idolatrous, he would not have been permitted to do so, since he codifies that "it is forbidden to give medical aid to an idolater even for hire"[33]

Islamic practice no longer idolatrous

Maimonides then discusses the practice of throwing stones and rules that, despite its origin, it was no longer idolatrous. He concludes: "The long and short of it is that even though at their root these things were established for idolatry, not a man in the world throws these stones or bows down to that place or does any of the rites for the sake of idolatry - neither verbally nor mentally; their heart is rather surrendered to Heaven."[34]

Maimonides' son, R. Abraham, who took his father's view to its logical conclusion when he argued that, although Islamic religious practices should not be imitated, strictly speaking they do not fall under the Biblical prohibition of following the ways of the Gentiles. This is so simply because "Muslims are monotheists who abhor idolatry."[35]

Forced Conversion to Islam

Also important for understanding Maimonides' view of Islam is a well known letter than he wrote around the year 1165, when he was still a resident of Fez, having not yet travelled to Erez Yisrael and Egypt. It was addressed to the inhabitants of Morocco, who had been threatened by the Almohads with conversion, exile, or death. It so happened that an anonymous scholar who had been living outside of the Almohads' reach had issued a ruling that Islam was idolatry and that, therefore, one must give up his life rather than convert to Islam. If one did not, he was to be treated as no different than a true apostate. This ruling created somewhat of a storm among the crypto-Jews of Morocco, and it was in response to this confusion that Maimonides wrote his letter, which was a marvelous defense of a Jewish community that was forced to hide its religion because of persecution.[36]

Rabbi Haym Soloveitchik's discussed at length the issues involved.[37] However, one thing which appears to be sure, is that it was the Maimonidean acceptance of Islam's monotheistic character that enabled him to come to the defense of the crypto-Jews, even if he does not argue this point explicitly. Either he felt that this notion was so obvious, he did not feel the need to defend it. Alternatively, one could say that his refusal to argue the case that Islam is not idolatry was because he regarded the crypto-Jews as never having truly accepted the religion in the first place and, therefore, his argument was able to proceed along a different line, one which argues that, even assuming that Islam is idolatry, the Jews still have not violated the idolatry prohibition.[38] However, had the Jews truly accepted Islam, one could probably have expected Maimonides to argue that, whereas the Jews may have been heretics, they were not idolaters. By assuming that the Jews never adopted Islam, Maimonides can argue the way that he does.

However, Rabbi Soloveitchik argues that, since Maimonides identifies the denial of prophecy with idolatry, "why should the Shahadah, with its assertion of the primacy of Mohammed's prophecy, not be on a similar footing? The contemporary nature of Judaism changes little whether one asserts that there never was a revelation or whether one claims that it occurred but is now outmoded. Both statements would seem to be equally treasonable" (pp. 285-286). The Magen Avraham, [39], who argues that, at least in one respect, Maimonides equates conversion to Islam with idolatry.

Some authorities, after Maimonides, who, while clearly aware of the monotheistic nature of Islam, still disagreed with Maimonides' position, and asserted that Jews must give up their lives rather than be forced to convert to Islam. Their rationale was based on the fact that if one gives his agreement to Muhammed's prophetic mission, this is the equivalent of denying the validity of Torah. According to this opinion it is a capital offence to deny the Torah,[40] and they thus viewed idolatry as merely a manifestation of this denial. R. David ibn Zimra quotes the renowned R. Yom Tov Ishbili (c. 1250-1330) as holding to this view and expresses agreement with him.[41]

Muslim as Ger Toshav

If Muslims are not idolators, then why are they not Ger Toshav? Maimonides was of the opinion that a Muslim cannot be a Ger Toshav,[42] because it is forbidden for a non-Jews to create a religion. He rules according to the view that any non-Jewish religious system is illicit and the only alternatives for non-Jews are conversion or observance of the Seven Laws of Noah. This ruling by Maimonides is understood by many commentators to exclude any other religious system by definition.[43]

Whereas Congress recognizes the historical tradition of ethical values and principles which are the basis of civilized society and upon which our great Nation was founded;

Whereas these ethical values and principles have been the bedrock of society from the dawn of civilization, when they were known as the Seven Noahide Laws;

 

 

Although almost all achronim agree with Maimonides that Islam is not idolatry, most disagree that any non-Jewish religious system is illicit by definition. Rather than being seen as a religion in itself, most authorities hold that the Seven Laws are foundation of a proper religion.

Rabbi Nissim Gerondi

In a medieval commentary attributed to the famous sage, Rabbi Nissim Gerondi (c. 1310-1375), but possibly written by another scholar, one finds R. Nissim's discussion of Christians bowing to holy objects and Muslims bowing to Muhammed. Although the comment is not entirely clear, it appears to be saying that even though the Muslims do not turn Muhammed into a G-d, one must regard their actions of bowing down to him as idolatry, thus putting them in the category of idolaters.[44] This is a complete reversal Maimonides' view and it is unusual that there would be no reference to Maimonides' position. In any event, we have reason to believe that R. Nissim did not hold to this view, and we are in possession of a responsum of his in which he declares unambiguously that Islam is not a form of idolatry.[45] Although some scholars have attempted to reconcile these two views, for example R. Eliezer Waldenberg.[46]

Halachic Rulings

Benefiting From or Drinking Wine handled by Muslims

This question has been dealt with above.

The Hajj, Facing Mecca and Shechitah

As late as the fifteenth century, we find that R. Simeon ben Zemah Duran (Tashbez) ruled that Islam itself was not idolatrous.[47] but he also ruled that a shohet to was not permitted to slaughter animals while facing Mecca.[48] because he regarded the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca as being of an idolatrous nature.[49] Of course, there is a difference between the view of the Tashbez and R. Nissim quoted above. Where the Tashbez was concerned with the remnants of the pre-Islamic period, R. Nissim's objection appears to be directed at what he considered to be pure Islam, not including any pre-Islamic pagan remnants.

R. Solomon ben Adret (c. 1235-c. 1310), ruled however, that although he regarded the practice as distasteful, would not prohibit.[50] This view was supported by R. David ibn Zimra (Radbaz),[51] and it was ruled as final halachah in the Shulhan Aruch.[52] However, none of these authorities quote a responsum by Maimonides, which agreed with the Tashbez' position.[53]

Rabbi Yisrael MeShklov, one of the leading disciples of the Vilna Gaon, in his addendum to the Shulchan Aruch called Mappat HaShulchan considered a situation that went one step further, in that the Muslims insisted that the Jewish shohet acknowledge Allah by proclaiming "Allahu akbar" when he slaughtered. R. Abraham Isaac Kook, not able to point to any explicit prohibition in this matter, also ruled that it is permissible to repeat the formula.[54]

A Jew entering a Mosque

What about a Jew entering a mosque? According to the halachah, a Jew is forbidden to enter a house of idolatry and, therefore, almost all halachic authorities forbid one from entering a church. Since Islam is not idolatrous, there should be no problem for a Jew to enter a mosque and, although no early halachists seem to discuss this question, the prevailing opinion of recent halachic authorities is to be lenient.[55] Similarly, one nineteenth century Ashkenazic authority permitted the conversion of a mosque to a synagogue without the "nullification" of idolatry that is required when converting a church into a synagogue,[56] while another authority even permitted a Jew to assist in the building of a mosque.[57] Nevertheless, a leading contemporary authority, basing himself on the previously cited view attributed to "R. Nissim," forbids visiting a mosque,[58] and this view is followed in a recent halachic work intended for a popular audience.[59] Earlier in this century, one rabbi, using the previously cited views of R. Yom Tov Ishbili and R. David ibn Zimra, even went so far as to declare that, according to the halachah, all mosques in the Land of Israel had to be destroyed![60]

Selling land to a Muslim

According to a Mishnaic halachah, one is not permitted to sell land in Israel to a Gentile.[61] What is not clear is whether this prohibition applies to all Gentiles or only to idolaters. A number of authorities state that Muslims are definitely excluded from this prohibition since they enjoy, at least in part, the status of a Ger Toshav to whom it is permitted to sell land. For the same reason, it is permitted to give a Muslim a present (without expecting something in return), something which is forbidden to be done with an idolater.[62] This view is the basis for the Israeli Chief Rabbinate's decision to "sell" the land of Israeli farmers in the Sabbatical year in order to circumvent the prohibition against cultivating the land during this year. As long as it is sold to a Muslim there is no problem.[63]

Esth:9:22: As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.

Rv:11:10: And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

However, a number of prominent rabbinic authorities dispute this view, and assert that Muslims do not have the status of a Ger Toshav thus making it forbidden to sell them land or even give them a present.[64] In addition, even according to those who accept the basic view that Muslims in Israel are Gerei Toshav it is possible that this notion may no longer apply. One of the characteristics of a Ger Toshav is that they accept Jewish sovereignty,[65] a characteristic clearly absent when one is dealing with a population that refuses to accept Israeli rule. The late Rabbi Meir Kahane often made this point with regard to Arabs in Israel,[66] and it has begun to find larger acceptance among other halachists.[67] As the intifada continues it is only to be expected that more and more halachic authorities will discount Israeli Muslims from the rank of Ger Toshav. This might be a step towards some halachic views that non-Jews who refuse to accept Israeli rule are not permitted to remain in the Land.[68] R. Ben Zion Krieger[69] asserts that Israel is obligated to expel the Arab population. However, this opinion has been met with complete rejection by all important halachic authorities. There is an enormous literature by contemporary scholars concerning the halachic status of Arabs in Israel[70]

Remnants of a Jewish-Islamic relationship

There are some indications that the early Jewish-Islamic relationship was based in some part of a Noahide relationship. It appears that the early Muslims looked to the Jews for approval and authority, "to settle doubts and disputes":

But if you are in doubt as to what We have revealed to you, ask those [the Jews] who read the Scriptures before you [the Muslims]. Certainly the truth has come to you from your Lord, therefore you should not be of the disputers.

Al-Baqara 2:136

Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 38 (Kitab al Hudud, ie. Prescribed Punishments), Number 4434:

Narrated Abdullah Ibn Umar: A group of Jews came and invited the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) to Quff. So he visited them in their school. They said: Abu Qasim, one of our men has committed fornication with a woman; so pronounce judgment upon them. They placed a cushion for the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) who sat on it and said: Bring the Torah. It was then brought. He then withdrew the cushion from beneath him and placed the Torah on it saying: I believed in thee and in Him Who revealed thee. He then said: Bring me one who is learned among you. Sheich Palazzi's Speech at the Conference on Noahide Council

Earlier in the day, several speakers addressed issues surrounding the B'nai Noah movement as part of a conference on the establishment of the B'nai Noah Council.

Sheich Abdul Hadi Palazzi, a leader of the Italian Muslim Assembly, addressed the assembly, speaking about B'nai Noah in Islam: "Islamic law holds within it the seven laws of Noah and can be taught correctly to the Muslims of the world... I remember reading that a new Sanhedrin was created in Jerusalem [and] my impression was very positive - I thought maybe something new had been created to allow the Jewish people to project moral and legal clarity to counterbalance the lack of it in our world."

Palazzi added that the project of creating a council of Noahide teachers would hopefully counter the negative educational effect of the Gaza withdrawal, "which taught the opposite to my people - it convinced many that only terrorism works."

US to Persuade Syria to Resume Talks with Israel


(IsraelNN.com) The U.S. State Department confirmed that a delegation of top security officials will arrive Wednesday in Damascus to deliberate with its Syrian security officials regarding security arrangements on the Syrian-Iraqi border. The United States has demanded from Syria to step up security along the border to prevent infiltration into Iraq.

One of the members of the delegation includes State Department official Frederick Hoff, who is responsible for bridging the gap on territorial dispute between Israel and Syria. The status of the Golan is an issue that previously broke-down talks between Israel and Syria. One official said that the U.S. will try to get Syria to renew peace talks with Israel. Talks between the countries were mediated by Turkey until their suspension when Israel began its military operation in Gaza last December

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- Rabbis and kabbalists prayed during a special flight over Israel whose purpose was to contain the swine flu pandemic.

Did they sprinkle Remphan star dust over the Days the Pigs fly?

The 50 participants on Monday flew in an Arkia Airlines plane that took off from Ben Gurion International Airport. The rabbis and kabbalists blew a shofar seven times and recited prayers for abolishing illnesses, Ynet reported.

Reportedly it was was the third time since the establishment of the state that prayers have been held on planes circling the country, according to Ynet. The first time was during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, and the second was in 1996 following a wave of terror attacks.

Final Decision regarding Falong Gong vs. People’s Republic of China

 

Bs”d 12 Tamuz 5768 15 July 2008, JERUSALEM

Israeli Falong Gong practitioners, representing Falong Gong practitioners in the People’s Republic of China, lodged a complaint against the Government of the People’s Republic of China before the Sanhedrin sitting as The International Court of Justice, headed by Rabbi Adin Even Yisrael (Steinzalts) in the month of Tamuz 5767 [July 2007].

The complainant claimed that the Government of the People’s Republic of China, with no due process of law, arrests large numbers of Falong Gong practitioners, interns them in labor camps, and perpetrates further violent and illegal acts against them, including murder and organ harvesting from live people – Falong Gong practitioners, all of this as a means of vengeance, punishment and repression, despite the fact that Falong Gong practitioners never acted against the Government of the People’s Republic of China in any way; that all their activity and all their intent is the physical and mental health of the Falong Gong practitioners, which is achieved by physical exercises and education towards truth, compassion and tolerance.

The Israeli Falong Gong practitioners further claimed that the Government of the People’s Republic of China has created a huge supply of human organs, which supplies people from around the globe.

It is well known that health authorities in the State of Israel in the past covered the expenses of flying patients to China for transplants – or alternatively bringing organs from China to Israel, but that this procedure has been stopped since they became aware of the suspicions that the source of these organs were prisoners who had been killed and their organs harvested.

Professor Arie Eldad made an inquiry in The Government of the People’s Republic of China regarding a large quantity of skin transplants, and received a positive response. This evidence was confirmed from other sources.

The International Court of the Nascent Sanhedrin agreed to deal with the complaint according to the rule: [Avoth III,14] “Beloved is man, that he was created in His image”.

a. The Falong Gong practitioners stated that they believe that they are being persecuted as a result of two opposing processes: 1. The decrease of the membership of the Chinese Communist party, which is the political basis of the government, as opposed to 2. The increase of the numbers of the Falong Gong practitioners. Of late, the numbers of Falong Gong practitioners was greater than the membership of the Chinese Communist party. In the opinion of the Israeli Falong Gong practitioners, the Chinese Communist party has been viewing this development with anxiety for over a decade, and nine years ago decided to take steps to oppose this trend. Their attitude changed at that time suddenly from a warm and encouraging attitude to one of vicious repression by all means – including murder and organ harvesting.

b. The International Court of the Nascent Sanhedrin by means of the Secretary, turned to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, requesting their response to the complaint. The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China turned to various people connected with the political establishment in Israel to try to influence the Court to refrain from dealing with the case. Mrs. Ora Namir, who was an Ambassador of Israel to the People’s Republic of China, also tried to persuade the secretary to refrain from taking up this issue. The Court did not heed these pleas.

c. As a result, two diplomats from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, the first and third secretaries, met with a representative of the Court. The Chinese delegation claimed that the Government of the People’s Republic of China was being slandered by false allegations. They claimed that the Falong Gong practitioners are a medical menace since they preach to refrain from receiving conventional medical treatment.

d. Additionally, the Chinese delegation claimed diplomatic immunity from any proceeding of the Court.

e. Additionally, they argued that holding such a hearing of this complaint could damage the very good relations between the Chinese people and the Jewish people. The Chinese representatives pointed at the fact the people of China received many Jewish refugees during the Second World War.

f. The Court is not an agent of the government of Israel; it is an independent voluntary body, who bases its deliberations and its decisions upon the great body of Jewish Jurisprudence, whose origins lie in the written Torah and the Oral interpretations as given at Sinai, and has been a living body of Law and Morals for over three thousand years. Jewish courts have a tradition of being independent of the Governments; the tradition is that Justice must rule, regardless of the Status of the litigants, as said in Deuteronomy 1,17: Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of any man; for the judgment is God's…. Our tradition insists on Justice for all, for Jew and non-Jew alike.

g. Accordingly, the Secretary responded to the Chinese representatives that one must differentiate between a nation and the government of the nation. The Jewish people honor and respect the Chinese people for the aid they gave to the Jewish refugees from the Nazi regime during World War II, and indeed this attitude is the source of the willingness of the Court to examine the alleged suffering of a large segment of the Chinese people.

h. Furthermore, the claim of diplomatic immunity from the hearing of the complaint of the Falong Gong practitioners against the Government of the People’s Republic of China was investigated. Professor Ruth Lapidot, Professor of international law at the Faculty of Law and at the Department of International Relations of The Hebrew University, Jerusalem, explained that diplomatic immunity refers to an agreement binding on independent States, and is not relevant to investigation by other types of institutions.

i. The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, while refusing to appear before it, sent the Court material in the form of written statements and Compact Disks to refute the complaints.

j. Since the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China refused to appear before the Court, the issue became somewhat more complicated, as by the tradition of Jewish Jurisprudence, when one side of a dispute does not appear in court, it is obligatory on the court to act not only as an objective Judge but at the same time as attorney for the side which is absent.

k. The Court heard witnesses who came to Israel to testify. Additionally the Court employed special courts outside the State of Israel to take testimonies.

l. The Court heard testimonies from Chinese people who left China in the last few years. These people testified to the treatment they themselves experienced at the hands of the police and other arms of the Government of China, describing many kinds of violations of basic human rights. They testified that these abuses occurred without their having been charged with any outlawed activity. Among other facts, they also testified indirectly regarding Chinese organ harvesting.


m. The Court heard expert testimony by Mr. David Kilgour, the well known lawyer and human rights activist, who early in his career was a Crown Attorney, and later held a variety of ministerial positions, among them Minister of External Relations and Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific. He presented indirect evidence, and recordings of Chinese doctors, which were taken under the supervision of respectable committees. Mr. Kilgour was cross-examined, and was found to be a reliable witness. The court found no reason to impugn the motives of the witness. The witness also presented documents, including original documents, and including summaries of various well-reputed international organisations, which clearly give credence to the complaints.

The Court found no reason to believe that the Falong Gong practitioners had any intent nor did they make any attempt to overthrow the Government of the People’s Republic China. Thus there was no acceptable excuse for the steps taken against the Falong Gong practitioners.

The Court further states, that even had the Falong Gong practitioners planned to engage in anti-government political activity, or even had they engaged in anti-government political activity, the actions taken against them were incompatible with legal or moral norms. These actions include: harassment by police, summary arrest, imprisonment without charge, various kinds of physical violence including sleep deprivation and other more violent types of torture – up to and including killing by means of organ harvesting – all this without trial!

The Jewish people not very long ago suffered such treatment at the hands of Nazi Germany: a previously rational and liberal open society was taken over by a ruthless political party. Under the control of this party, German military and police organisations tortured and murdered six million Jews and additionally killed millions of other people.

During the years of the rule of the Nazis, the government was careful to hide its criminal activities from public eye. Thus it was not possible to obtain first-person testimony to their criminal acts. However, in the end, the Nuremburg trials were conducted, and the truth about the persecution and the murders was disclosed years later.

With this background, the Court found that in cases involving persecution by governments, Justice cannot be achieved by adherence to normal rules of procedure and of evidence. Adherence to such rules would be “stopping ones ears from hearing of blood, and shutting ones eyes from looking upon evil” [per Isaiah 33,15]. The only way to discover the truth is to allow indirect, hearsay and circumstantial evidence, since that is all that is available. This type of evidence is acceptable in Noahide jurisprudence.

On the basis of the accumulation of the various testimonies and indirect evidence, the International Court of the Nascent Sanhedrin, came to the conclusion that there were unnumbered cases of killing of innocent Falong Gong practitioners, perhaps also out of consideration of material benefits derived from organ harvesting.

The Court wishes to clarify that it does not reject capital punishment in principle, in accordance with the seven Noahide commandments.

The Court finds it appropriate to turn to the Government of the People’s Republic of China with an unequivocal demand to assure the minimum of liberties as indicated by the seven Noahide commandments, as given to Adam, to Noah and to all humanity, which include:

  1. Prohibition of Murder
  2. Prohibition of Theft
  3. Dealing Justly with Criminals
  4. Honoring internationally accepted humanitarian law to the extent that this law is not in contradiction to Torah and to basic human morals.

These laws include prohibition of torture, unlawful confiscation of property and organ harvesting without the consent of the donor.

 


The Government of the People’s Republic of China is required to implement the Chinese law, which was enacted in the spring of 2007, which will put an end to the killings without trial and to organ harvesting without consent.

The Government of China is required to allow missions sent by a coalition of international public organisations to investigate freely the compliance of the Chinese government agents with the basic elements of the seven Noahide commandments as stated above, which are the Human Rights Charter according to the Torah [The Five Books of Moses]. These missions are to have freedom of travel and are to have the freedom to grant protection – including extradition - to anyone who testifies or who tries to testify before these missions. These freedoms are necessary to ensure that the missions will be able to verify compliance with the said elements of the seven Noahide commandments.

In a few weeks the 2008 Olympic Games are scheduled to open. The purpose of these Olympic Games is to bring all the peoples of the world together, to strive together and to get to appreciate one another, to increase peace and brotherhood and to reduce strife, and to channel rivalries into peaceful sports instead of wars and violence.

It is our opinion, that if the human rights issues are not settled before the opening of the Olympics, participation in these Games may be understood to indicate indifference to human rights violations in China, and support for suppression. Ignoring the spilling of the blood of innocent people may even encourage more bloodshed. It must be remembered that the participation of many nations in the 1936 Olympic Games in Germany under Hitler was interpreted as consent to his regime.

Thus if the human rights issues are not addressed before the Olympic Games begin, we consider participation in them by athletes and by spectators and political leaders to be an indirect danger to world peace.


With respect to other repression which the Government of the People’s Republic of China is alleged to be perpetrating or supporting, such as the Tibet Repression, the Darfur Massacres, the aid China is said to be giving to the development of nuclear weapons by North Korea – all these support the allegations of the Falong Gong practitioners regarding the attitude of the Government of the People’s Republic of China towards human life and the rights of Nations.
