Our Sages taught, "Whoever labors on Friday, will eat on Shabbos." Similarly, the spiritual influences of Friday affect the nature of the Shabbos. Thus, the present Shabbos benefits from the influence of Friday, the fifteenth of the month, the day on which the moon shines fully.The nature of that lesson can be understand by a comparison between Yud-Tes Kislev and other holidays. Pesach and Sukkos fall on the fifteenth of the month, the time when the moon shines fully. Shavuos falls in the first half of the month, the time when the moon waxes. In contrast, Yud-Tes Kislev falls in the second half of the month, the time when the moon is waning. Similarly, we find that the holiday of Chanukah is celebrated at the time of the waning of the moon. Indeed, in the midst of that holiday, the moon becomes totally obscured.

The above concepts relate to the service of the Jewish people who "resemble the moon" and "establish their calendar according to the moon." They can be resolved within the context of a more general question. Seemingly, since the moon wanes in the second half of the month, rather than continue counting the days in ascending order 15,16,17, it would be proper to count the days in descending order 15,14,13. This, however, is not the case. After the shining of the full moon on the fifteenth of the month, despite the fact that the moon begins to wane, the following day is counted as the sixteenth of the month. As the moon continues to wane, the numbers grow higher. Indeed, the greatest dates of the months (the 29th or 30th) are the nights on which the moons light is obscured entirely

Finally, this Presidential vote was forecasted as one of the closest in the American history. A Reuters/Zogby poll showed on Thursday that Bush was leading Kerry by 48 to 46 percent but the lead was well within the poll's margin of error.

Again where were all those top world-famous astrologers and renowned psychics on September 11th? Well I was there and exposed the drama to the best of my abilities on my website two weeks before the 911 attack. Note also that it is one of the most obvious predictions I have ever made for this country, and was printed in Moon Power well over a year before it unfolded. Astrology is extremely popular in India, its going in that direction in the US and also all over the world as imposed by planet Uranus (the new ruler of the world). This brought me to be noted in the famous The Marquis Publication "Who is Who" in America, to be a regular on many national television programs (Discovery/TLC/NBC etc.) and ultimately enjoy my own predicted American dream. The road has been arduous and loaded with challenges but I was equipped by birth with true knowledge. Applying my wisdom accordingly gives me the option to reach and establish emotional, financial and spiritual stability for myself.

Now I can in all honesty and courage say that I am the only Astropsychologist in the world having once more unarguably and against all odds, proved my case with the Presidential Election. Of course many small-minded people will wrongly perceive my honest and direct attitude as an ego trip and will have to deal with their lack of perception, and overly critical natures induced by inferiority complexes. Once more I DO NOT practice astrology as you know, read, perceive, study or teach…for if I did I would not be able to do what I do did and will always do. That is, service the world with complete honesty and total integrity using my god-given gift.

Why not ask someone who really knows how to read the Universal code, the hieroglyphs of the universal mind and the true language of the gods? Why not perceive the real thing and trust his guidance? Like an unyielding donkey, the educational system like its religious counterpart has failed miserably and will not easily change its mind. I have proven to you repeatedly that I am ahead of my time in perceiving the impossible and uncovering the future. Its time for change, its now time to teach the teachers and stop ignorance. Ignorance is evil, knowledge and education means power…there is NO room for ignorance in our Colleges and Universities!

I desperately need your help so I can work in building my Astropsychology schools to integrate the old science where it once used to be, accepted as a solid discipline in all our Colleges and Universities. Two responses to this issue have emerged. One is a radical rereading of the Torah from a modernist historical perspective, suggesting that Jewish women in ancient times had religious resources which were not acknowledged by the men who handed down the Torah. Some feminists argue that we can resurrect the goddess-symbols of the ancient Near East. They suggest that the matriarchs themselves may have worshipped goddesses, and that Israelite women are known certainly to have done so. (We know of these practices from the criticisms heaped on goddess-worship by the prophets, but feminists dismiss those criticisms as mere propaganda of the zealous male followers of the patriarchal G-d.) Therefore, they say, we can borrow from goddess worship its rich feminine imagery; we can speak of the Queen of Heaven rather than just the King; we can use images of birth and fertility as well as of creation and conquest.

A second, more moderate view suggests that we do not need to return to goddesses. But, since G-d is neither male nor female, we can use feminine language and symbols to express uniquely feminine aspects of G-d. We can creatively retranslate Hebrew words, giving them a different nuance that is either beyond gender or has a feminine flavor. We can say “Ruler” of the universe rather than “King,” for example, to give a more neutral description. We can speak of G-d as our Father and Mother; we can mention the matriarchs as well as the patriarchs in our prayers and stories. Thus, the remembering and retelling of the tradition can come to have a less masculine cast, while remaining true to the words of the tradition as we have received it, and without passing over into idolatry.

Queen of Heaven (Latin Regina Coeli) is a natural title for the Great Goddess in any manifestation. In Sumer Inanna was hailed as 'Queen of Heaven' in the 3rd millennium BCE. In Akkad to the north, she was worshipped later as Ishtar.

In the Sumerian Descent of Inanna, when Inanna is challenged at the outermost gates of the underworld, she replies

'I am Inanna, Queen of Heaven,

Her cult was deeply embedded in Mesopotamia and among the Canaanites to the west. In the early 6th Century BCE, the neighbors of the Israelites still worshipped the Queen of Heaven, and the temptation for the Hebrews to follow her cult was apparently hard to resist. Jeremiah, writing ca 590-580, and speaking for Jahweh, saw that

"The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger." (Jeremiah 7:18)

just prior to the festival of Astarte (or Istar or Easter), 
who was said to have received her son back from the dead;

cross buns of Good Friday were used in the worship of the

This is the second installment in an ongoing study into the subject of the Incarnation. In order to understand this particular commentary the reader must believe by faith that the Torah correctly teaches that God is ONE (Hebrew "echad", cf. Deut. 6:4), and that there is NO room in the Scriptures for any other god, created or otherwise (cf. Isaiah 44:6. This truth is axiomatic in order for God to emerge as the ONE and ONLY recognizable YHVH, who alone is worthy of worship.

Here they snare you to their god the "Robber" who has no ONLY Begotten SON the IAMHE for their god the "Replacement Theology" gods of Judaism, in which modernday Judaeo-Churchinsanity now say is their god, the god of the jews......and thus they are too now become anti-Christ for fear of their shemgods of hell

Traditional and historic Judaism correctly understands the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4) to be instructing its followers to worship and serve ONE God, whose name happens to be YHVH.

In all fairness to Christianity, which happens to have sprung from one of the first century Judaisms, non-Jewish believers who know and study their Bible correctly also serve and worship the ONE God, whose name is YHVH.

6,600 Dead as Quake, Tsunami Devastate Asia

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (Reuters) - One of the most powerful earthquakes in history hit southern Asia Sunday, unleashing a tsunami on Sri Lanka and India and swamping tourist isles in Thailand and the Maldives to kill more than 6,600 people.

The tsunami — a menacing wall of water — caused death, chaos and devastation across southern Asia. The tsunami, up to 30 feet high, was triggered by an 8.9 magnitude underwater earthquake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

"This is one of the largest earthquakes ever on record," Peter Rees, of the International Federation of the Red Cross in Geneva, told CNN television, adding: "The situation in Sri Lanka … is extremely serious."

Emergency services were stretched throughout the region popular with Western tourists flying east for Christmas sunshine. Some areas were totally unprepared and the tourists found themselves flung into the jaws of disaster.

In Sri Lanka, where the death toll was nearly 2,500, corpses floated in floodwaters, while thousands fled their homes and cars floated out to sea. Idyllic beaches were turned into fields of debris and destruction.

The worst-hit area appeared to be the tourist region of the south and east where beach hotels were inundated or swept away.

In Indonesia, where about 1,800 people were killed, raging waters dragged villagers out to sea and tore children from their parents' arms.

Wailing relatives gathered around bodies in the south of India, where the death toll was more than 1,870. Beaches were littered with submerged cars and wrecked boats. Shanties on the coast of Madras, where 100 died, were under water.

"The whole area has been turned into a cemetery," Chellappa, a 55-year-old fisherman in Madras, said.

"Nothing like this has ever happened in our country before," said Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra of Thailand where the death toll was 257. "I just couldn't believe what was happening before my eyes," Boree Carlsson told Reuters from a hotel 500 yards from Phuket's Patong beach in Thailand. "As I was standing there, a car actually floated into the lobby and overturned because the current was so strong," said the 45-year-old Swede.

The earthquake of magnitude 8.9 as measured by the U.S. Geological Survey struck at 7:59 a.m. off Sumatra and swung north with multiple tremors into the Andaman islands.

Pope John Paul said the enormous tragedy made for a sad Christmas.

SRI LANKA'S WORST DISASTER

Sri Lanka appealed to the world for aid, saying that one million people, or 5 percent of its population, were affected.

"I think this is the worst ever natural disaster in Sri Lanka," said N.D. Hettiarachchi, director of the National Disaster Management Center.

India feared a devastating toll along its southeastern coast. In the state of Tamil Nadu alone, a government official said at least 1,625 had been killed. Rescuers were searching for hundreds of missing fishermen and thousands were homeless.

Television footage showed bodies, including young girls, being thrown into trucks in Madras, capital of Tamil Nadu state.

Hundreds fled to higher ground with pots, pans and other meager possessions. People carried bodies in hessian sacks to hospitals where dozens of dead already lined the corridors.

In Andhra Pradesh, about 400 fishermen were feared missing and 200 Hindu devotees who had gone to the beach for a holy dip in the morning were feared dead.

Almost 500 tourists were stranded on a rock in the sea off India's southernmost tip, witnesses said. In the Maldives, none of the thousands of foreign visitors in the beach paradise, a magnet for honeymooners and well-heeled tourists from around the globe and famed for its world-class scuba diving, was believed to have been killed although some had suffered minor injuries.

Two-thirds of the Maldives capital, Male, was flooded and the international airport, itself lying just a few feet above sea level on an island of its own, was unusable.

In popular holiday islands off southern Thailand, emergency workers rescued about 70 Thai and foreign divers from the famed Emeral Cave and several dozen were found and evacuated from around other islands, officials said.

Two Thais were killed at Emeral cave, a major attraction for divers who have to swim underwater to its tiny beach and water illuminated by sunshine pouring through a hole in the roof.

Officials said more than 600 tourists and residents were being evacuated by air and sea from Ko Phi Phi, the tiny island made famous by the 2000 film "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Thai government ordered the evacuation of stricken coastal areas, which included popular beach resorts on the islands of Phuket and Krabi. Thousands were injured in Thailand.

Belgian tourist Christian Patauraux said he saw many dead.

"There are a lot of dead bodies and a lot of injured. I'm not sure when the next ferry is coming. Everything has been flattened," he told Reuters.

RING OF FIRE

Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands, lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire where plate boundaries intersect and volcanoes regularly erupt.

The worst affected area was Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, where 1,400 had been killed. More than 200 prisoners escaped from a jail when the tsunami knocked down its walls.

The earthquake was the world's biggest since 1964, said Julie Martinez, geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado.

"It is multiple earthquakes along the same faultline."

It was the fifth-largest earthquake since 1900, she said.

"These big earthquakes, when they occur in shallow water, … basically slosh the ocean floor … and it's as if you're rocking water in the bathtub and that wave can travel basically throughout the ocean," USGS geophysicist Bruce Presgrave said.

The world's worst tsunami in recent history struck on July 17, 1998, when three waves ripped through Papua New Guinea's northwest coast, killing 2,500.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years struck deep under the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Sumatra on Sunday, triggering tidal waves up to 20 feet high that obliterated villages and seaside resorts in six countries across southern Asia. Nearly 10,000 people were killed in the devastation.

Tourists, fishermen, homes and cars were swept away by walls of water that rolled across the Bay of Bengal, unleashed by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake. The tsunami waves barreled nearly 3,000 miles across the ocean to Africa, where at least nine people were killed in Somalia, witnesses said.

At least 4,185 killed in Indonesia, the country's health ministry said.

In Sri Lanka, 1,000 miles west of the epicenter, more than 3,000 people were killed, the country's top police official said; that number, however, does not include the unconfirmed 1,500 deaths reported by rebels who control part of the country.

Elsewhere, about 2,300 were reported dead along the southern coasts of India, at least 289 in Thailand, 42 in Malaysia and two in Bangladesh.

But officials expected the death toll to rise, with hundreds reported missing and all communications cut off to towns in the Indonesian island of Sumatra that were closest to the epicenter. Hundreds of bodies were found on various beaches along India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, and more were expected to be washed in by the sea, officials said.

The rush of tsunami waves brought sudden disaster to people carrying out their daily activities on the ocean's edge. Sunbathers on the beaches of the Thai resort of Phuket were washed away. A group of 32 Indians — including 15 children — were killed while taking a ritual Hindu bath to mark the full moon day. Fishing boats, with their owners clinging to their sides, were picked up by the waves and discarded.

"All the planet is vibrating" from the quake, said Enzo Boschi, the head of Italy's National Geophysics Institute. Speaking on SKY TG24 TV, Boschi said the quake even disturbed the Earth's rotation.

 

The U.S. Geological Survey (news - web sites) measured the quake at a magnitude of 8.9. Geophysicist Julie Martinez said it was the world's fifth-largest since 1900 and the largest since a 9.2 temblor hit Prince William Sound Alaska in 1964.

The epicenter was located 155 miles south-southeast of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province on Sumatra, and six miles under the seabed of the Indian Ocean. There were at least a half-dozen powerful aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from almost 6 and 7.3.

On Sumatra, the quake destroyed dozens of buildings — but as elsewhere, it was the wall of water that followed that caused the most deaths and devastation.

Tidal waves leveled towns in Aceh province on Sumatra's northern tip. An Associated Press reporter saw bodies wedged in trees as the waters receded. More bodies littered the beaches.

Health ministry official Els Mangundap said 1,876 people had died across the region, including some 1,400 in the Aceh provincial capital, Banda Aceh. Communications to the town had been cut.

Relatives went through lines of bodies wrapped in blankets and sheets, searching for dead loved ones. Aceh province has long been the center of a violent insurgency against the government.

Some of the worst devastation was in Sri Lanka, where a million people were displaced from wrecked villages. Some 20,000 soldiers were deployed in relief and rescue and to help police maintain law and order. Police chief, Chandra Fernando said at least 3,000 people were dead in areas under government control.

 

An AP photographer saw two dozen bodies along a four-mile stretch of beach, some of children entangled in the wire mesh used to barricade seaside homes. Other bodies were brought up from the beach, wrapped in sarongs and laid on the road, while rows of men and women lined the roads asking if anyone had seen their relatives.

"It is a huge tragedy," said Lalith Weerathunga, secretary to the Sri Lankan prime minister. "The death toll is going up all the time." He said the government did not know what was happening in areas of the northeast controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels.

 

The pro-rebel www.nitharsanam.com Web site reported about 1,500 bodies were brought from various parts of Sri Lanka's northeast to a hospital in Mullaithivu district, 170 miles northeast of the capital, Colombo.

About 170 children at an orphanage were feared dead after tidal waves pounded it in Mullaithivu, the Web site said.

No independent confirmation of the report was available, but TamilNet — another pro-rebel Web site — said some guerrilla territory was badly hit. "Many parts ... are still inaccessible and it was difficult to provide damage estimates or death tolls there," it said.

In India, beaches were turned into virtual open-air mortuaries, with bodies of people caught in the tidal wave being washed ashore.

"I was shocked to see innumerable fishing boats flying on the shoulder of the waves, going back and forth into the sea, as if made of paper," said P. Ramanamurthy, 40, who lives in Kakinada, a town in Andra Pradesh state.

The huge waves struck around breakfast time on the beaches of Thailand's beach resorts — probably Asia's most popular holiday destination at this time of year, particularly for Europeans fleeing the winter cold — wiping out bungalows, boats and cars, sweeping away sunbathers and snorkelers, witnesses said.

"Initially we just heard a bang, a really loud bang," Gerrard Donnelly of Britain, a guest at Phuket island's Holiday Inn, told Britain's Sky News. "We initially thought it was a terrorist attack, then the wave came and we just kept running upstairs to get on as high ground as we could."

"People that were snorkeling were dragged along the coral and washed up on the beach, and people that were sunbathing got washed into the sea," said Simon Clark, 29, a photographer from London vacationing on Ngai island.

On Phuket, Somboon Wangnaitham, deputy director of the Wachira Hospital, said one of the worst hit areas was the populous Patong beach, where at least 32 people died and 500 were injured.

Another survivor on Phuket was Natalia Moyano, 22, of Sydney, Australia, who was being treated for torn ligaments.

"The water kept rising. It was very slow at first, then all of a sudden, it went right up," Moyano said. "At first I didn't think there was any danger, but when I realized the water kept rising so quickly, I tried to jump over a fence, but it broke."

On Phi Phi island — where "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed — 200 bungalows at two resorts were swept out to sea.

"I am afraid that there will be a high figure of foreigners missing in the sea and also my staff," said Chan Marongtaechar, owner of the PP Princess Resort and PP Charlie Beach Resort.

Some 200 seriously injured people, most of them foreigners, were evacuated by helicopter from the island after dark, said Maj. Gen. Winai Nilasri of the Border Patrol Police. He said the island, which was crammed with tourist facilities, was without electricity.

There was no tsunami threat for western North America or Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Scientists said the catastrophic death toll across the region might have been reduced if India and Sri Lanka had been part of an international warning system designed to advise coastal communities that a potentially killer wave was approaching.

Although Thailand is part of the system, it has not yet been implemented for the western coast of the Thailand penninsula, where the waves came smashing ashore Sunday, the scientists said. The system relies on a network of earthquake seismic sensors and tidal gauges attached to buoys in the oceans.

Indonesia, a country of 17,000 islands, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the margins of tectonic plates that make up the so-called the "Ring of Fire" around the Pacific Ocean basin.

The Indonesian quake struck just three days after an 8.1 quake struck the ocean floor between Australia and Antarctica, causing buildings to shake hundreds of miles away but no serious damage or injury.

Quakes reaching a magnitude 8 are very rare. A quake registering magnitude 8 rocked Japan's northern island of Hokkaido on Sept. 25, 2003, injuring nearly 600 people. An 8.4 magnitude tremor that struck off the coast of Peru on June 23, 2001, killed 74.

Israeli nuclear squealer tries to sneak into Bethlehem with Santa hat

Israeli police detained nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu at a checkpoint as he tried to travel to the West Bank town of Bethlehem on Friday, preventing him from attending midnight Mass in the traditional birthplace of Christ, a police spokesman said.

Vanunu, a Jewish convert to Christianity, was released from an Israeli prison in April after completing an 18-year sentence for revealing secrets of Israel's nuclear program to the Sunday Times newspaper in London.

Under the terms of his release, the former technician at the Israeli nuclear facility in the Negev desert town of Dimona was barred from leaving Israeli territory and contacting foreigners.

Police spokesman Gil Kleiman said Vanunu was stopped at a checkpoint between Jerusalem and Bethlehem, six kilometers (four miles) away.

Kleiman said Vanunu was in a Volkswagen van emblazoned with the letters "TV" -- commonly used to identify press vehicles -- and had a Santa Claus hat in his possession.

"He said he wanted to pray at the Church of the Nativity on Christmas Eve, even though he knew it was illegal for him to leave Israel," Kleiman said. "He was detained by officers then moved to a police station for further questioning." He said Vanunu remained in police custody late Friday.

Since his release from prison in April, Vanunu has been living at a Jerusalem Church compound.

Last month he was briefly detained by police on suspicion of revealing classified information before being freed. Vanunu denied those charges, saying he has no more secrets to disclose.

Saudi Study Offers Critical Analysis of the Kingdom's Religious Curricula

Introduction
The Second Forum for National Dialogue, held in Saudi Arabia in late December 2003 under the patronage of Saudi Crown Prince Abdallah Ibn Abd Al-'Aziz, was attended by 60 intellectuals, researchers, clerics, and public figures, among them 10 women. The forum, which focused on religious extremism and moderation, ended with recommendations for: accelerating political reform and expanding popular political participation; renewing the religious discourse in compliance with modernity; establishing a culture of dialogue in Saudi society; allowing responsible freedom of expression; strengthening women's status in all areas; setting out a strategy to help keep Saudi youth away from religious extremism; and improving the Saudi school curricula so that they spread a spirit of tolerance and moderation. One of the major studies presented at the forum was a study of the religious curricula in boys' schools in the Saudi state school system. The study, conducted by former Saudi judge Sheikh Abd Al-'Aziz Al-Qassem and Saudi author and journalist Ibrahim Al-Sakran, was based on an examination and critical analysis of three curricula for Saudi middle and high schools – Al-Hadith, a general curriculum on Islamic traditions; Al-Fiqh, a curriculum on matters of religious law and ritual, and Al-Tawhid, a curriculum on matters of belief. The researchers found extremely grave defects in the curricula, particularly with regard to attitude toward the "other" – that is, toward anyone whose views are not in line with the Wahhabi Islam that is dominant in the kingdom. Although the researchers note that the curricula denigrate and show hatred toward and incitement against non-Muslims, the main body of findings shows no less intolerance to non-Wahhabi Muslims.

Instead of strengthening pupils' understanding of disputes and disagreement as a natural and legitimate part of human life, and instead of inculcating a culture of dialogue and pluralism in Muslim society, the Saudi curricula that the researchers examined actually encouraged denigration of, hatred of, and incitement against Muslims whose customs and views differ from those of Wahhabi Islam. The curricula teach that non-Wahhabi Muslims are unbelievers who are introducing forbidden innovations into Islam and collaborating with the colonialist foreigners. This approach, the researchers concluded, encourages violence toward others, and misguides the pupils into believing that in order to safeguard their own religion, they must violently repress and even physically eliminate the "other."

The researchers found that the curricula they examined make sweeping accusations of unbelief [Takfir], and permit the killing and taking of the property of "polytheists" [Mushrikun]. The derogatory term "polytheists" harks back to early Islam, when the monotheistic Muslims fought to the death against Arabs who believed in many gods alongside Allah. In the Saudi schoolbooks the term ' Mushrikun 'is used for all non-Wahhabi Muslims – and applied so broadly that even statements such as "Development programs will eliminate poverty and ignorance" and "Medical progress will eliminate disease" are also considered polytheism – because they attribute results to causes other than Allah. Similarly, using names for Allah that are not the accepted ones is considered unbelief.

The Saudi curricula that they examined, which were compiled in the context of intellectual debate and religious and political struggle, drag pupils into ideological conflicts that should not be their concern at this stage. The researchers also state that these teachings fill the pupils with constant fear that they may fail and fall into polytheism by presenting the religious deviation as a danger lying in wait for everyone, at any time, any place. The researchers warn that presenting issues in this way makes pupils extremely anxious about society, and diminishes their social involvement.

There are also extremely serious defects in the curricula's approach to reality, and the curricula do little to prepare pupils for active integration into and involvement in society. Quite the opposite – the curricula were found to exaggerate society's deviation from religion, focus on descriptions of society's atrophy, stress how polytheism is spreading in the Muslim world, emphasize how the Muslim world is being flooded with forbidden innovations, and focus on society's moral disintegration. Such overstatement, say the researchers, undermines the pupils' sense of belonging to their environment, causes social alienation, and pushes the pupils toward isolation from and conflict with their own society.

The researchers stated that instead of encouraging positive civic activity, the curricula limit the individual's public participation only to religious charities and to organizations that protect public morality. Thus, the pupil either seeks other, illegitimate avenues to express himself, or despairs of the situation and sinks into indifference.

Regarding the curricula's attitude toward modern culture, the researchers found that there was no attempt to inculcate in the pupils any legitimacy for civil values such as human rights and political awareness, and that there was much less discussion of social issues and civil values than of religious matters. The curricula refer only to clerics as "scholars," and object to using the same term with regard to civil sciences experts. The curricula create a sense of conflict between religion and culture; they denigrate other cultures' achievements and teach that these other cultures and societies are materialistic, devoid of faith, and lacking in the essential foundations of happiness.

The researchers stated that the curricula confuse non-Muslim religious customs with the social and civil activities of daily life and public affairs, and teach that all such customs and activities are unbelief. Even when modern ideas such as nationalism, communism, secularism, and capitalism arise in the curricula, it is argued that their only aim is to fight Islam and that they are a form of unbelief. Such attitudes, warn the researchers, prevent Muslim society from developing and from benefiting from the work and achievements of other cultures.

Seeking legitimacy for their findings, the researchers argue:

1) The need for curricular reform is an internal need emanating from Saudi acknowledgment of the flaws in the curricula, and has nothing to do with international pressure on Saudi Arabia to reform its curricula.

2) They are not seeking to abolish religious education, but rather to show that in its present form Saudi religious education is unbalanced and inaccurate, makes misleading generalizations, and in no way reflects all attitudes existing in Islam. They show that the Saudi schoolbooks tend to accentuate a particular aspect of the religious scriptures and neglect other aspects – thus leading pupils to act according to one interpretation. The teaching material does not show the pupils – who lack appropriate background and knowledge – all the minute details of Islamic religious law, and thus causes misperception of Islam and Islamic precepts. Further, the curricula examined do not encourage the concept of Ijtihad – that is, using independent judgment in legal or theological matters in Islam – and do not emphasize that any effort to reach the truth, even a failed effort, is welcome.

It should be emphasized that the researchers' basic starting point is religious. Their fundamental assumption is that Islam includes a variety of views, opinions, and customs, and that there is no need to adhere only to the Wahhabi interpretation – on the contrary; more moderate approaches are preferable. According to them, a moderate interpretation of Islam will make it possible to live a religious life that does not stand in contradiction with modern culture and does not reject the importance of civil values.

Thus, at the conclusion of their study, the researchers recommend balance and moderation in religious discourse. While remaining within the framework of Islam, and without calling for secularism, they recommend eliminating accusations of unbelief against other Muslims and instead emphasizing acknowledging their lives and property as worthy of protection. Similarly, they recommend increasing the pupils' understanding of human rights that already exists in Shari'a law; adopting a balanced religious view of non-Muslim cultures that will allow learning and benefiting from these other cultures; adopting a balanced religious view regarding behavior toward non-Muslims; and increasing pupils' awareness of their social and civic obligations and of the importance of their active integration into society.

The following are the main points of the research:


Preface
The authors begin by presenting the questions that guided their research:

1) To what extent do the Saudi curricula examined in the study include a variety of religious texts, particularly on issues concerning attitudes toward the "other," so as not to show bias toward a particular extreme interpretation of Shari'a while ignoring other, more moderate interpretations?

2) To what extent do the Saudi curricula maintain the right order of importance in matters of religious law so as to prevent the situation in which the exceptional cases create confusion with regards to the fundamental rights set out by Shari'a ?

3) To what extent do these curricula set out principles of justice, particularly with regard to other Muslims as well as "the people of the book" (Jews and Christians)?

4) To what extent do these curricula inculcate tolerance toward other cultures and sciences so as to enable the endorsement of these cultures and sciences that do not harm the foundations of Shari'a ?

5) To what extent do these curricula support pupil participation in civic life, in a way that encourages self-expression in peaceful ways rather than in separatist ways outside society's legitimate channels?

6) To what extent do these curricula maintain a balance between the achievement of goals through civic means and their achievement through various means of confrontation?

The researchers clarified that, in light of "Western media attacks on our country" it would be "exaggerated to place the blame for the armed [Islamic] violence against the West on the [Saudi] religious curricula, and they [the curricula] are certainly not the main reason for [the violence]. [This is because] the flaws in the curricula do more to damage intra-Muslim relations than to cause incitement against non-Muslims."

For this reason, they stated that amending the Saudi curricula is more in the Arab and Muslim interest than as a response to external demands – and that such amendment should not be avoided just because Westerners) demand it.


Part One: The Attitudes toward Muslim Opponents
In their analysis, the researchers stated that what is needed in order to create stability in Muslim society are religious curricula that responsibly teach and support Shari'a principles regarding dealing with the existence of disagreement between people and the way to deal with it. They recommend first of all that the curricula acknowledge that there is such a thing as human disagreement and disputes among people. They also recommend that the curricula give stronger support to pluralism and to its consideration as legitimate within Islam; that the curricula relinquish the [Wahhabi] attitude of superiority toward the other Islamic schools of thought; that they establish the values of coexistence, love, and friendship found in Shari'a law; that they set out how to behave fairly toward "other" Muslims; and that they uphold the principle of Ijtihad. [3]

They concluded that the curricula examined in the study "did not succeed in presenting a coherent position on these issues, and that they are dominated by inconsistency and contradiction. Sometimes, and particularly on the theoretical level, these curricula discuss in detail the supreme Islamic customs and moral behavior between man and his fellow man. However, on the practical level, when discussing attitudes toward those who are different, the curricula reiterate contradictory and misleading positions. These inconsistencies place the pupil in a crisis that makes it difficult for him to shape a clear religious position in coherence with the principles of Shari'a law. As a result, the pupil is confused in shaping his moral world regarding [Muslims] who are different…"

The researchers presented theoretical examples of moral and behavioral rules mentioned in the curricula: "Intra-Muslim relations must be strengthened;" [4] "A pleasant expression and a smile are good deeds on which the Muslim must not skimp in relations with his Muslim brothers;" [5] "The sanctity of Muslim blood and honor [must be respected];" [6] "A Muslim must not be called an unbeliever for no reason;" [7] and "[When a Muslim thinks that his brother] is harming the religion, he must counsel him [how to act] instead of hastening to vilify him as an unbeliever." [8]

At the same time, however, they found that the curricula included other concepts that contradicted these principals. Instead of emphasizing the strong interrelationships among Muslims and the general rights of all Muslims, and instead of setting out the principles of Ijtihad and teaching patterns of dialogue, the curricula include texts that incite the children against "other" Muslims. Thus, for example, the curricula state that "other [Muslim] groups, such as the [rationalist] Jahamiyya, Mu'tazila, Ashariyya, and [the mystical] Sufis, [9] were deceived, and have deviated from the right path because they followed teachers who deviated from the right path." [10] Such statements, say the researchers, reduce the complex elements of these ideological differences into a single statement – blaming these Muslim groups of following teachers who deviated from the right path. Such statements also lump together groups that have nothing in common, and label all of them religious deviants.

In addition, the researchers noted that the curricula accuse of unbelief all who deny Allah's own description of Himself or the Prophet Muhammad's description of Allah. [11] They say that texts like these attack Muslim clerics and their pupils: "What does the young pupil have to do with the fine points of the precepts [of Muslim law] regarding accusations of unbelief? Don't such texts denigrate the strict guidelines regarding accusing [another Muslim] of unbelief?"

In their analysis, the researchers also stated that the curricula present exaggerated and misleading statements about the customs of various Muslim groups. This, they say, confuses the pupils as they try to understand how to maintain proper relations with Muslims different from themselves. For example, in their discussion of the popular custom of celebrating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, the curricula state: "Celebrating the birth of the Prophet is an act of imitating Christians. This day is celebrated by ignorant Muslims, or by clerics who incite [their followers] from the right path. This celebration is attended by a large crowd of rabble; [further, this celebration] is not free of deeds that are considered polytheism and of deeds that are forbidden. Sometimes there is mixing of men and women – a mixing that causes temptation and loathsome deeds. Therefore, this [celebration] is bid'a [an innovation forbidden in Islam] that was brought into Islam by worthless people…" [12]

The researchers said: "After the curricula label 'others' as [belonging to] the camp of bid'a without giving details and without accuracy, they present rules for treating the people who commit bid'a – [rules which] contradict the principles of Shari'a by stating that 'it is forbidden to visit with or spend time in the company of anyone who commits bid'a." [13]

Encouraging Violence Against "Other" Muslims

In their study, the researchers stated: "The curricula inculcate aggressive, negative, and inappropriate interpretations of the behavior of 'different' Muslims – including a premise that there is a conspiratorial link between [this 'different' Muslim] and the colonialist. The curricula state: 'It is the [Muslim's] obligation to know that the infidel countries encourage those who commit bid'a to disseminate their bid'a,and aid them in a variety of ways in doing so.' [14]

"This approach of casting doubts upon the 'different' Muslim," they stated, "plays a role in weakening the pupil's morality, and undermines in him [all] positive thought regarding ['different'] Muslims… In spreading the language of segregation, in misguiding, and in doubting [others] endangers the shaping of a balanced pupil. Worse still is presenting the history of disputes in Islam in a way that can be understood by the pupil understands from as legitimizing the violent repression of the 'other' and even his physical elimination because of his views on disputed issues… These things may create a misapprehension that violent treatment of the 'other' is a task in which the pupil is obliged to take an interest."

Pre-cog Thought Police

The researchers presented a number of examples permitting violence toward the "other." One schoolbook states: "The more time passes since the [beginning of] the Prophet's mission, the more religious deviation has proliferated. The prophetic customs have disappeared and many forbidden innovations have been created… The Companions of the Prophet Sahaba and their disciples Tabi'un determinedly faced these developments [armed] with knowledge. Nothing escaped them; rather, they repressed [these developments]. They clarified truth and removed doubt… No bid'a appears without Allah decreeing that someone will refute it and reveal its flaws, such that the Sunna [i.e. the way of the Prophet] will prevail… When Ghilan Al-Dimashqi declared [the institution of] a bid'a, the Tabi'un rose up against this bid'a … and when he persisted in his bid'a, he was killed by Hisham bin Abd Al-Malek… The same happened every time the gangs committing bid'a proliferated: The armies of the Sunna rose up against them…" [15]

They stated: "Making these statements, which praise violent behavior toward the 'other,' is very dangerous to the psychology of the pupils … and may bring about the collapse of the [values of] the sanctity of life and soul in the internal consciousness of the youth, and they may become contemptuous of life and think that murder and bloodshed are legitimate – particularly when these means are presented to the pupils as pillars of observance and preservation of his faith."

The researchers wrote that the schoolbooks they examined teach that "deepening the Islamic identity is done by means of punishment," and they quoted: "The interest of the religion is above any other interest. Allah in His mercy has permitted many ways for preserving the faith, including the directive to maintain distance from and punish disobedience of Allah's law; [the directive] to fight the phenomenon of bid'a and to punish those who commit it, as well as sorcerers and their ilk; [the directive] to kill unbelievers murtadun and infidels zanadiqa; and [the directive] of Jihad." [16]

They further explained: "This text portrays the religion in a way that misleads the pupil into thinking that the preservation of the faith must be carried out by means of a series of punishments. The text ignores the fact that the fundamental defense of the faith is based on evidence … on justice, on the Shura [i.e. the people's council], and on the quality of mercy. According to Shari'a, punishments are carried out in accordance with special instruction, and the pupil, who lacks knowledge [in this matter], should not be introduced to this large compilation of minute regulations. Without this knowledge, an image that reduces treatment of ['other'] people to a chain of violent punishments and deeds creep into [the pupil's] understanding [of how the religion is to be preserved]."

The researchers added: "The curricula call to deepen hatred toward Muslims who are lax [in their observance] – while [in fact] love and friendship should be spread [among all Muslims]." An example of this is the curricula's instruction to hate for the sake of religion. The curricula say: "Hate for the sake of Allah, that is, hate the others who oppose the commandments of the proper religion." [17] The researchers state, "A declaration of enmity against those of his Companions who were lax [in their religious observance] is not among the traits of the Prophet – who [actually] was quick to forgive."

Sweeping Accusations of Unbelief Takfir in the Curriculum

While the curricula examined by the researchers focus the pupil's attention on the dangers of making accusations of unbelief, in some instances these same curricula act rashly by depicting unbelief as rampant in the Muslim world. For example, the curricula say: "The Muslim nation has been infiltrated by the beliefs of polytheism, destructive principles, and deviant groups that resulted in many leaving the fold of Islam – even though they say [the Shehada, i.e.] that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger." [18]

"Along with misleading images that include sweeping accusations of unbelief, the curricula present many phrases permitting bloodshed and the expropriation of property, and these [phrases] are scattered within [the curricula] in disorder. [There are phrases] such as: 'The blood and property of the polytheists are permitted.' [19] The curricula stated that even when the polytheist is an ignorant Muslim, his life and property may be taken: '[Regarding] those who say, There is no God but Allah, yet do not abandon the cult of the dead and visiting tombs [of the great sages], there is no prohibition on spilling their blood and expropriation their property.' [20] Moreover, the curricula state that it is permitted to enslave the family members of the 'others' – and, in statements bordering on incitement, they say that Allah 'has permitted to the monotheistic believers the blood, property, and family members of [those who have sinned by polytheism], and they may take them as slaves…'" [21]

According to the researchers, these statements, and others like them, indicate lack of judgment regarding important religious precepts – which must be presented with great legal accuracy, and adapted to the pupils' level.

The researchers pointed out that the inconsistency in the curricula increased several times over when the subject addressed was modern trends of thought. This recklessness was evident in accusations of unbelief levied with the aim of winning the pupils over to an anti-modern stance. As an example, the researchers point out the curricula's attitude toward the idea of national Arab unity and to the institutions, such as the Arab League, that emanated from this idea. The curricula calls promoting pan-Arabism "atheist calls from the Jahiliyya [pre-Islamic] era aimed at fighting Islam and freeing [Muslims] from its precepts and commandments," and state further that "national pan-Arab thought strips the religion of its importance, and sees religion as an obstacle on the path to nationalism." Based on this approach, the curricula determine that "there is no doubt that the idea of [Arab] nationalism is a return to Jahiliyya." [22]

The researchers asked, "How can the pupil digest these extreme contradictions between the principle stating that making accusations of unbelief is a grave matter and between making such reckless accusations of unbelief? Furthermore, the extremism in regard to Arab nationalism goes so far as to depict the idea of pan-Arabism as the punishment of every society that left the Muslim faith. The curricula state: 'After Europe invaded the Muslim world politically and culturally, the Muslim world sunk into fanaticism based on blood, citizenship, and nationality, and it must be known that these divisions are Allah's punishment for all who deviated from His laws and denied His religion.' [23]

"The curricula present an extreme approach also with regard to modern scientific theories in the areas of economics, politics, and law." For example, the curricula state that "Belonging to atheistic streams such as communism, secularism, capitalism, and other streams of unbelief is apostasy. When anyone who belongs to these streams claims to be a Muslim, it is the greatest of hypocrisies, since the hypocrites are considered to be [only] outwardly part of Islam while they in fact belong to the infidels." [24]

The researchers further found that the curricula attempt to limit the types of relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims, to highlight aspects of enmity toward non-Muslims, and to refrain from underlining aspects of Shari'a that hold for all humanity. Thus, for example, the curricula state, "It is forbidden for believers to love the polytheists and to form relationships with them – even if they are their relatives." [25] To refute this approach, the researchers presented examples from the scriptures on Muslim-polytheist relations during Islam's formative period, and state that Shari'a never said that every polytheist and unbeliever must indeed be treated with total enmity, but rather that aggressors must be treated with enmity but peace-seekers must be treated well.

The Researchers' Conclusions for the First Chapter

At the end of the first part of the study, the researchers concluded the following:

1) The curricula that they examined do not teach that disagreement and dispute are the way of the world, and therefore there is no conceptual system that can eliminate human disagreement, unite trends of human thought, and require the individual to follow one single path.

2) The curricula do not deepen belief in pluralism.

3) The curricula do not cultivate intellectual humility and do not renounce the arrogance characterizing the various Muslim schools of thought.

4) The curricula do not emphasize values of coexistence; instead, they strengthen the legitimacy of repressing [Muslims] who are different.

5) The curricula do not refrain from denigrating the 'other' and do not acknowledge areas in which 'others' are correct.

6) The curricula do not cultivate the principle of exerting efforts to investigate in the search for truth; nor do they teach that all effort is welcome even if the attempt fails.


Part Two: The Curricula's Approach to Reality
In their discussion of the role played by the curricula in preparing the pupils for integration into society and for preserving society's institutions, the researchers noted positive examples from the curricula promoting this integration along with inconsistency and overstatement in describing society's deviance and atrophy. This, state the researchers, "upsets the pupil's emotional balance," causes the younger generation to become alienated from society, and pushes young people toward isolation and conflict with society.

The curricula go to great lengths to depict how polytheism is spreading, how the Muslim world is being flooded with forbidden innovations bida', and how society is suffering from moral disintegration. Some examples are the following statements: "Most Muslims imitate the infidels in forbidden innovation and polytheism;" [26] "Polytheism, destructive principles, and deviant cults have spread throughout the [Muslim] nation, and they have caused many people to leave the fold of Islam, although they recite [the Shehada]: 'There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger;'" [27] "Unfortunately many Muslims today denigrate adherence to their faith, the glory [of their faith], and calling to join it. Their morals have become lax; grievous sin is rampant among them; and they tend to follow their lusts." [28]

According to the researchers, "such excess in describing the deviation in society undermines the pupil's sense of belonging to his Muslim world and may rend the pupil's sense of a spiritual connection with the Muslim world – because limiting the depictions of society to a few negative phenomena abolishes all meaning in [social] belonging and participation."

The researchers said that the curricula sometimes attack Saudi educational institutions for not allocating enough time and attention to religious subjects, and add that they also attack the media, excessively describing their flaws. The curricula state that "the media have become in most cases a tool of destruction and heresy, or focus on material matters and entertainment, and take no interest in anything that strengths morality, inculcates the proper faith, and struggles against deviant trends." [29] The curricula also determine that "we should not listen to nor believe the news … particularly those published by the deviant foreign media, newspapers, and magazines or by the news agencies that are filled with hatred [of Islam.]" [30]

Further, they pointed out in brief that "the curricula set dangerous rules for the pupils about accusing regimes and governments of unbelief." To support this finding they cite the following example from the curricula: "If [a government or regime] makes a general ruling regarding Islam and claims that some of its laws are oppressing and humiliating, this is unbelief, which removes a Muslim from the fold of the [Muslim] community – even if they [later recant], saying 'We have erred and [admit] that the ruling of Shari'a is right more than [secular law]." [31] The researchers brought another example how the curricula cast doubts even on states that apply the Shari'a partially. The curricula demand full implementation of the Shari'a and state: "Allah's commandment should be obeyed… not only with regard to personal status, as is done in several countries that affiliate themselves with Islam." [32]

The researchers stated: "It is dangerous to exaggerate society's weak points and reality's flaws, because the [resulting] grim picture affects the pupil's vitality … and makes him think that it is useless to try to change the situation, and that the best means of preserving the religion is to quit [society] into insular groups." Similarly, they explained that the Prophet Muhammad himself had warned against intensifying the individual's sense of fear and doubt regarding society, because this increases social deviance. Accordingly, they conclude that "it is not in the best interests of Muslim society to widen the gaps between society and its youth and to fill them with a sense of alienation and lack of common ground – to the point where some enjoy breaking the law…"


Part Three: Frightening Pupils Regarding Religious Deviance
Tranquility is a fundamental human need, and it motivates the individual to good deeds and creative activity. In contrast, a desperate person contributes nothing to society. Thus, the researchers explain, Shari'a law stresses "the fine balance between hope and fear." Moderate religious discourse is vital in giving the individual a sense of self-confidence along with an essential measure of calm – because excessive anxiety gives rise to unbalanced behavior and religious confusion. Excessive anxiety causes the individual to isolate himself and to fear that sinking into day-to-day concerns may distract him from his religious practice. Fearing that the shadow of religious deviance lies in wait for everyone promotes in the individual a tendency to oppose change and be apprehensive about anything new. Thus, an increase in an individual's tension about his religion means a decrease in his social involvement.

"One of the worst things religious preaching can do," the researchers stated, "is to shatter the individual's emotional tranquility by frightening him about the risk of falling into polytheism, excessively intimidating him about [introducing] innovations that are forbidden [in the religion], and overemphasizing the trap of hypocrisy. This does not mean that the dangers do not exist – but they also do not surround the individual every moment of the day and are not lying in wait for him around every corner, in a way that does not permit him to trust his ability to overcome them."

As Europe’s Jewish leaders meet, anti-Semitism still tops the agenda

As Jewish leaders from the farthest corners of Europe gathered to assess the past and plan for the future, the fight against anti-Semitism remained their No. 1 priority.
“In the last year our efforts were concentrated on issues of anti-Semitism, which have been very serious again in Europe. It is a serious issue everywhere,” Cobi Benatoff of Italy, president of the European Jewish Congress, said in a news conference Sunday at the group’s annual meeting.

Also on the agenda were issues related to the enlargement of the European Union, the E.U. constitution, the proposed admission of Turkey into the union and the E.U.’s relationship with Israel.

Representatives of some 25 countries, including several new E.U. members, attended the conference, which was held at a Jewish community center here.

In a Sunday news conference held after the group’s morning session, Benatoff said the EJC is planning to meet with E.U. education ministers to “find ways of introducing into the curricula in Europe subjects that will act as a vaccine against prejudice in our younger generations.”

Also essential in the struggle against anti-Semitism is a dialogue with European Christian and Muslim leaders. Roger Cukierman, an EJC vice president and head of the French Jewish communal organization CRIF, said his group has been actively involved in such dialogue with moderate and less moderate Muslim groups. Perhaps as a result, the leader of one Muslim group issued a statement this year saying that attacks on Jews are like attacks on the Koran.

While Muslim anti-Semitism is a source of great concern, there recently has been a “rise of the more traditional anti-Semitism, from right-wing extremist groups,” Serge Cwajgenbaum of France, the EJC’s general secretary, told JTA. “We can imagine it will continue and even increase.

He suggested that the increase is directly related to the opening of European borders. Recent vandalism against Jewish, Christian and Muslim cemeteries in France’s Alsace region has been attributed to German and French right-wing extremists.

In Germany, three extreme right-wing parties have joined forces in hopes of maximizing their support on the European level.

“The more we see the integration of new countries into Europe, the more nationalistic issues will appear,” Cwajgenbaum said. “They will use anti-Semitism as a tool to assert their nationalistic view and attitudes.”

Stephan Kramer, general secretary of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, stressed the rise in anti-Semitism among left-wing and intellectual circles.

But there is hope for a united front against anti-Semitism, said Henry Grunwald, an EJC vice president and head of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Grunwald praised meetings on anti-Semitism this past year with the European Commission and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and suggested it was time to follow through on the “Berlin Declaration,” a commitment from the OSCE meeting in April to improve monitoring and combating of anti-Semitism across Europe.

“We feel that both European and national authorities have become pro-active in the fight against anti-Semitism,” Benatoff said, “though they are not acting as fast as we would wish.”

Despite concerns about anti-Semitism, several Jewish communal leaders stressed in their reports to the EJC that relations with government leaders are positive. Representatives of Ukraine and Lithuania said recent political campaigns there seemed relatively devoid of anti-Semitic content.

But several speakers said they were deeply troubled by attacks on synagogues, Jewish cemeteries and schools.

Charlotte Knobloch, a vice president of both the EJC and the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said she was deeply troubled by the level of popular anti-Semitism in the Baltic States and Poland.

“The EJC has a responsibility and a job to do” in educating new E.U. member states, Knobloch said at the press conference. She recently had learned that one of the few historic synagogues left in Poland, in a city outside Krakow, had been razed and that villas were being built on the spot.

In the afternoon session participants raised other issues, including proposed restrictions on shechitah, or kosher slaughter, and circumcision, in hopes that the European Jewish body would put them on its agenda for the coming year.

One year after the bombing of two synagogues in Istanbul, Daniel Navarro of Turkey reported that there had been no personal attacks on Jews in Turkey. Of greater concern, though, was a subtle change in official attitudes toward Israel, he said.

“Relations with Israel were at the highest level two years ago, and now they were reduced to a normal working relationship,” he said. “Turkey is following the attitude of the European Union governments, while wanting to talk about joining the E.U.”

In his statement to the press, Benatoff stressed the role that Europe might play in helping bring about Israeli-Palestinian peace.

“The roots of the state of Israel are in Europe, and as Europeans we would like to see Europe take responsibility” to help resolve the conflict, he said. “We believe that it can only do so if it has a more balanced approach.”

Meanwhile, Flo Kaufmann, vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said in an interview that anti-Semitic attacks in England sometimes have corresponded with events on the ground in Israel. She said new figures are about to be released showing an increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Great Britain over the past year.

Yet “Jewish life goes on, and that is what is quite extraordinary,” Cwajgenbaum said.

“We haven’t seen the phenomenon,” he said, “of Jews hiding their Judaism. This is absolutely not the case with French Jews. Jewish life goes on and continues in opposition to those attacks.”

WASHINGTON – Ever since Sept. 11, 2001, there have been questions about Flight 93, the ill-fated plane that crashed in the rural fields of Pennsylvania.

The official story has been that passengers on the United Airlines flight rushed the hijackers in an effort to prevent them from crashing the plane into a strategic target – possibly the U.S. Capitol.

During his surprise Christmas Eve trip to Iraq, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld referred to the flight being shot down – long a suspicion because of the danger the flight posed to Washington landmarks and population centers.

Was it a slip of the tongue? Was it an error? Or was it the truth, finally being dropped on the public more than three years after the tragedy of the terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000?

Here's what Rumsfeld said Friday: "I think all of us have a sense if we imagine the kind of world we would face if the people who bombed the mess hall in Mosul, or the people who did the bombing in Spain, or the people who attacked the United States in New York, shot down the plane over Pennsylvania and attacked the Pentagon, the people who cut off peoples' heads on television to intimidate, to frighten – indeed the word 'terrorized' is just that. Its purpose is to terrorize, to alter behavior, to make people be something other than that which they want to be."

Several eyewitnesses to the crash claim they saw a "military-type" plane flying around United Airlines Flight 93 when the hijacked passenger jet crashed – prompting the once-unthinkable question of whether the U.S. military shot down the plane.

Although the onboard struggle between hijackers and passengers – immortalized by the courageous "Let's roll" call to action by Todd Beamer – became one of the enduring memories of that disastrous day, the actual cause of Flight 93's crash, of the four hijacked jumbo jets, remains the most unclear.

Several residents in and around Shanksville, Pa., describing the crash as they saw it, claim to have seen a second plane – an unmarked military-style jet.

Well-founded uncertainly as to just what happened to Flight 93 is nothing new. Just three days after the worst terrorist attack in American history, on Sept. 14, 2001, The (Bergen County, N.J.) Record newspaper reported that five eyewitnesses reported seeing a second plane at the Flight 93 crash site.

That same day, reported the Record, FBI Special Agent William Crowley said investigators could not rule out that a second plane was nearby during the crash. He later said he had misspoken, dismissing rumors that a U.S. military jet had intercepted the plane before it could strike a target in Washington, D.C.

Although government officials insist there was never any pursuit of Flight 93, they were informed the flight was suspected of having been hijacked at 9:16 am, fully 50 minutes before the plane came down.

On the Sept. 16, 2001, edition of NBC's "Meet the Press," Vice President Dick Cheney, while not addressing Flight 93 specifically, spoke clearly to the administration's clear policy regarding shooting down hijacked jets.

Vice President Cheney: "Well, the – I suppose the toughest decision was this question of whether or not we would intercept incoming commercial aircraft."

NBC's Tim Russert: "And you decided?"

Cheney: "We decided to do it. We'd, in effect, put a flying combat air patrol up over the city; F-16s with an AWACS, which is an airborne radar system, and tanker support so they could stay up a long time ...

"It doesn't do any good to put up a combat air patrol if you don't give them instructions to act, if, in fact, they feel it's appropriate."

Russert: "So if the United States government became aware that a hijacked commercial airline[r] was destined for the White House or the Capitol, we would take the plane down?"

Cheney: "Yes. The president made the decision ... that if the plane would not divert ... as a last resort, our pilots were authorized to take them out. Now, people say, you know, that's a horrendous decision to make. Well, it is. You've got an airplane full of American citizens, civilians, captured by ... terrorists, headed and are you going to, in fact, shoot it down, obviously, and kill all those Americans on board?

"... It's a presidential-level decision, and the president made, I think, exactly the right call in this case, to say, I wished we'd had combat air patrol up over New York.'"

There are two men behind the re-establishment of the Sanhedrin: Ovadiah Josef and Josef Elyashiv. The former is a chief rabbi of the Sefardi Jews and the latter a chief rabbi of the Ashkenazi Jews. Elyashiv is considered the spiritual heir of Moses, able to ordain the 70 others.

The rabbis behind the Sanhedrin’s reconstitution claim that, like the State of Israel, the new Sanhedrin is a work-in-progress. They see it as an institution that, once established, will reach the stature and authority that it once had.

Top Israeli rabbi says Jews should vote for Bush

A senior Israeli rabbi with influence among almost 150,000 American Jews ruled Tuesday that they should vote for President George W. Bush in the upcoming US elections, his office said.

Rabbi Shalom Yosef Elyashiv, responding to queries from Americans residing in Israel, has decided that Bush is better for Israel than his competitor, John Kerry, said an assistant to the rabbi, Haim Cohen.

Elyashiv's opinions are respected by large ultra-Orthodox communities, especially in Israel and the US. Elyashiv has strong influence over about half of all haredi Jews of European origin.

"Apparently George Bush loves Israel and thus we need to vote for him," the rabbi said Tuesday, according to Cohen.

The rabbi does not usually rule on political matters, especially those that don't directly concern Israel. But Elyashiv decided that the US is a "kingdom of grace," or great friend to Israel, and thus the elections there can directly influence the Jewish state, Cohen said.

TREASON and Blasphemy

About 140,000 American Orthodox Jews will probably abide by Elyashiv's decision, said Sam Heilman, an expert on American Jews at Queens College in New York. But Elyashiv is just confirming the theories of many analysts who believe most haredi Jews in the US vote Republican, Heilman said in a telephone interview from his office.

"What's extraordinary is that the rabbi is addressing non-Israelis in a sense," Heilman said. "This confirms that the Orthodox community, by and large, is supporting Bush more than Kerry."

But those Orthodox Jews who are already dead set on Kerry will not necessarily change their minds, despite Elyashiv's ruling, Heilman said.

The rabbi's decision will influence the vote of at least 10,000 American Jews currently residing in Israel, at least 700 of whom are from the battleground state of Florida, he said.

Most American Jews typically vote Democrat and, in 2000, the community voted 4-to-1 for Al Gore. But Kerry faces a tougher battle among Jews this election since Bush has built a reputation as a strong backer of Israel.

"The founder of Degel Hatorah, Rabbi Eliezer Menachem Shach, the third anniversary of whose death is marked this week, scrupulously respected the American Diaspora. When he explained his position, according to which territorial concessions should be made to save Jewish lives, he noted that "without the help of the United States, we would not be able to survive even one month on our own, and all those who speak so arrogantly, that we, we, we will be victorious, are despised by the Lord."

 Against this background it was more than surprising when Shach's successor, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, last week voiced the opinion that "it seems Bush is a friend of Israel and [American Jews] should vote for him." The man who asked the rabbi was David Morgenstern, a Bush activist in Israel.  

This is not just any foreign intervention in the American presidential elections. In these elections, many Haredi ultra-Orthodox Jews who live in Israel and have American citizenship will be voting for the first time. 

Some of them are voting in crucial states. The possibility that the votes of these Haredim will tip the scales would certainly have deterred Shach from intervening. A source who is very familiar with Shach's attitude said yesterday that Elyashiv's statement "seems to contradict everything Shach taught." Prof. Menahem Friedman, a researcher of the Haredi population, said Elyashiv's order attests to "a feeling of security and power that stems from the Haredim being citizens of a sovereign state. They feel the Zionist state has redeemed them. They no longer feel they have to be so cautious about not annoying the gentiles." Friedman says Elyashiv's statement is evidence of, among other things, the tough leadership crisis in Haredi Jewry in the U.S., which required guidance from the outside. A source close to Elyashiv responded that "it is not an order, but rather a suggestion." 

The source said there is no fear the statement will cause anti-Semitism, as Elyashiv voiced support for the Republican candidate, while most American Jews vote for the Democrats. The fact that this is no simple matter is also evident in the response by Knesset member Moshe Gafni (United Torah Judaism). "I have no idea," said Gafni. "I haven't delved into it' ... Israeli law allows people to be tried in Israel for several types of crimes committed beyond its borders - Nazis and their cohorts, for example, terrorists who harmed Israelis or Jews, or Israelis who broke the law abroad. 

There is now doubt, however, that the passing of the bill initiated by MK Arieh Eldad (National Union) and which is in an advanced stage - being prepared for second and third readings in the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee - will vastly extend Israeli legal jurisdiction. The bill calls for any Holocaust denier to be tried in Israel. In most countries in the world there is no prohibition on denying the Holocaust. One of Eldad's reasons for submitting the bill was effectively to create a deterrent for the citizens of those countries too.

"What I want is that if a Holocaust denier publishes a book in England, he will be considered a criminal in Israel," explained Eldad to a meeting of the committee. He clarified that even if no one is tried, it will be sufficient that deniers know they cannot come to Israel.

It is reasonable to assume Eldad's bill would not have reached such an advanced stage were it not for staunch support from Holocaust survivor Justice Minister Tommy Lapid. The ministerial committee on legislation, which Lapid heads, decided to support the bill and thus granted it coalition support. Lapid told Haaretz that he feels denying the Holocaust "is a clearly neo-Nazi crime.

Wig ban has Orthodox Israeli women switching to hats

Following the recent ban on wigs made from hair in India, many Orthodox women in Israel have resorted to wearing hats.

Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv has called on Jewish women to boycott Indian wigs because the hair may be involved in the Hindu ceremonies of idol worship.

Despite the call to abandon Indian wigs, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the largest Indian supplier of human hair to wig manufacturing, is not worried about sales. TTD is currently the largest seller of hair, even gaining them recognition in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Approximately 70% of the wigs sold in Israel come from hair in India.

CAIRO (AFP) - Arab League chief Amr Mussa said that the new US anti-Semitism law will not dissuade Arabs across the world from criticizing Israel's policies against the Palestinians. "We Arabs do not have any feelings of hatred toward Jews because they are Jews. Arabs are Semites in the same way as Jews," he said.

Mussa said Arabs would not respect the law if it is intended to "muzzle and ward off criticism of Israeli policies, which should be criticized because of their continuous crimes against the Palestinian people."

US President George W. Bush  signed the law Saturday despite the objections of the State Department, concerned that singling out one religion for special treatment might leave Washington open to charges of bias. "Unfortunately, the issue of anti-Semitism has became part of the US presidential campaign and this is a serious matter," said Mussa. President Bush  announced he had signed the bill as he campaigned in the key battleground state of Florida ahead of his November 2 election showdown with John Kerry.  Florida's Jewish population is the third largest in the world after Israel and New York.

The law requires the State Department to produce an annual report on anti- Semitism around the world and to form a specific office headed by a special envoy to document anti-Semitic abuses and design strategies to combat them.
